Denver Broncos blog, news and rumors

According to the National Football Post the Broncos worked out both of the key players of Cincinnati’s offense, quarterback Tony Pike and wide receiver Marty Gilyard.

The Broncos conducted a private workout for the Bearcats’ tandem this morning, according to sources with knowledge of the sitiuation.

We’ve been told that the Broncos sent offensive coordinator Mike McCoy and quarterbacks coach Ben McDaniels to the workout.

If this report is valid then it hints that Josh McDaniels and Brian Xanders will be more offensive minded this draft due to the recent heavy defensive signings. Working out Gilyard is not surprising with the possible Marshall trade, and I guess it can’t hurt to give Pike a try.

Thanks for the helmet Don Delco.

Thanks for the helmet Don Delco.

For almost two weeks now No Logo Needed, a great Cleveland Browns blog, has been holding an inter-blog mock draft. Today it was my turn at bat under center. With the handful of players just signed in free agency who did I turn my attention to? Well check it out here.

No Logo Needed’s great idea has rubbed off on me. If I want to turn this idea into reality I’m going to need the help of you loyal, intuitive, and well informed readers.

My question is, as readers, would you be interested in an inter-reader mock draft? This mock draft would consist of the first round only and it means one reader per team.

There are two ways I could orchestrate this collaborative mock draft. Either the readers would be selected at random and assigned to teams at random, or there would be a first come first serve process. For first come first serve the first to email me with their top ten teams they wish to be assigned to.

Tell me in the comments if you’re interested and if you are what way you would like it to be set up. Let your voice be heard Bronco fans! We here at Bronco Talk actually care what you have to say.

In the wake of several defensive line signings this free agency defensive end Kenny Peterson has been released. With the possibility of all three free agent signees Jamal Williams, Justin Bannan, and Jarvis Green all being starters this upcoming season someone had to be the odd man out. Also waived was guard Mitch Erickson who has spent the last two seasons on the practice squad.

Kenny Peterson’s release is probably due to not only to the amount of players at his position but his age as well. Peterson is 31 whereas the other defensive ends on the bubble Ryan McBean, and Marcus Thomas are 25 and 24 respectively. Peterson’s contract probably had little to do with the release, he was only going to make around a million this season. So this decision is due to the upgraded players at his position. Matt Prater

Denver Broncos kicker Matt Prater, who was an exclusive rights free agent, has agreed to a new contract with the club, the Denver Post reports. Terms of the new deal were not known.

Prater made 30 of 35 field goals in 2009 and converted 32 of 32 extra point attempts.

A solid move on a busy day by the Broncos.

The scales are tipping in the AFC West. Literally.

348-lb. defensive lineman Jamal Williams, who spent the past decade terrorizing the Denver Broncos as the center of the San Diego Chargers‘ 3-4 defensive front, has reversed roles. After a day of lengthy negotiations, the Broncos and Williams came to terms on a three-year deal that will keep the 33-year-old in Denver through 2012.

It is the third free agent signing the Broncos have made involving defensive linemen in their thirties since free agency began. The club added Justin Bannan on Friday and Jarvis Green earlier today.

The move reunites Williams with Broncos line coach Wayne Nunnely, who spent most of Williams’ career in the same capacity in San Diego before joining Josh McDaniels‘ staff last season.

This move is huge — pun intended. The Broncos can’t rely on Williams for 16 games (let alone 48), but with Ronald Fields providing depth and Bannan able to step in at NT in a pinch, Denver did a lot to improve and solidify its defensive front this week. Job well done, McDaniels and company.

Darrent Williams

Darrent Williams

Juror Ray Barrientos told reporters he was prepared to find Willie Clark guilty of murdering Denver Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams before he was dismissed from trial Monday. He also told reporters that he believes his fellow jurors will rule the same way.

Those comments issued a message — a signal of hope that justice will be served, three years after Williams was killed in a drive-by shooting. Unfortunately, not all of Barrientos’ comments conveyed the same message.

Barrientos, 42, who was dismissed from his duties as a juror for prematurely offering his opinion on the case to a third party, made some unsettling comments regarding one of the prosecution’s principle witnesses: Clark’s fellow gang member Daniel “Ponytail” Harris. Barrientos believes Harris was a second shooter that night, and, through plea bargaining with the district attorney’s office, is getting away with murder.

Jamal Williams

UPDATE: Jamal Williams has agreed to a three-year deal with the Denver Broncos.

Jarvis Green

The Denver Broncos have signed defensive end Jarvis Green, the team announced. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, it is a four-year, $20 million deal with $7.5 million expected in the first two years.

“Jarvis has a great deal of experience playing in a 3-4 system and will bring veteran leadership to our team,” General Manager Brian Xanders said. “We’re excited to add him to our roster.”

Green (6-3, 285) had been visiting with the Broncos since Monday. He is known as a versatile lineman with experience as both a run stuffer and a pass-rushing 5-technique in the 3-4, an element the Broncos couldn’t boast with consistency on their defensive front in 2009.

Green, 31, is the latest of a number of former Patriots to follow head coach Josh McDaniels to Denver from New England. Green started 12 games and tallied one sack for the Patriots in 2009.

San Diego Chargers nose tackle Jamal Williams

San Diego Chargers nose tackle Jamal Williams

The Denver Broncos may have allowed another free agent to slip through their fingers.

Former San Diego Chargers defensive lineman Jamal Williams is expected to visit the New Orleans Saints later today, reports NFL.com’s Jason La Canfora. Williams was working out with the Broncos Monday; La Canfora’s tweet would suggest that Williams has left or will leave Denver without a contract.

Previously, guard/center Rex Hadnot and defensive end Dwan Edwards visited the Broncos, but the two sides couldn’t agree to terms. Both players remain unsigned.

It’s a different offseason for Josh McDaniels and Brian Xanders, who seemed to have a vice lock on every free agent that entered the Rockies in 2009 but have been less aggressive this time around. It’s a disappointing reality when a shiny football toy player is staring a fan in the face, but credit them for not paying a player more than what they have him valued, especially in this wild uncapped market.
