The Denver Broncos waived wide receiver Chad Jackson Monday, making room for Brandon Marshall to rejoin the 53-man roster. Marshall was reinstated Sunday, but the Broncos were granted a 54-man roster exemption to figure out who would be released to add their disgruntled wideout. Jackson ended up the odd man out.

Jackson, a former Patriot, actually joined the Broncos last year during the Mike Shanahan era. Assuming Head Coach Josh McDaniels had some say in Jackson’s status in New England as Offensive Coordinator, this is the second time McD has axed Jackson in less than 12 months.

Jackson, a fourth-year wide receiver, joined the Broncos as a free agent on Oct. 27, 2008. He totaled eight kickoff returns for 162 yards (20.3 avg.) and a 19-yard catch in four regular-season games for the Broncos.

ESPN’s Merril Hoge and Tim Hasselbeck discuss whether Brandon Marshall has missed too much time or is willing to put in the effort to have a productive 2009 NFL season. What do you think, BT? Is it too little, too late for the Broncos wide receiver?

The twitterverse just can’t have enough “bombshells coming out of Denver,” it seems. Until we hear more we’re taking this with a grain of salt, but felt we should pass it along to you. Remember, this is a rumor, this is only a rumor…

The buzz started when a (presumed) New York Jets fan sent a tweet to Jets S Kerry Rhodes speculating that the team was going to trade quarterback Kellen Clemens to the Denver Broncos for wide receiver Brandon Marshall.

By now, Broncos fans have heard every variation of Marshall-to-Jets rumors in the book. But rather than ignoring the message or brushing it aside, Rhodes virtually confirmed it, replying, “u may be right!!! (hint hint).”

Whoa. Didn’t see that coming. Click here to read the rest of this entry »

Vonnie Holliday

New Denver Broncos defensive end Vonnie Holliday tells the Associated Press that he underwent knee surgery in late January, explaining why he remained unsigned until Saturday.

“A lot of people don’t know this, but I had my knee cleaned up and then I got released by Miami and I found myself in free agency: a 12th-year pro, 33 years old and coming off knee surgery,” Holliday said. “So, when I met with the Broncos I had a puffy knee.”

Still, the Broncos stayed in touch and came calling Saturday.

“I really didn’t want to miss training camp,” said Holliday, who stayed in shape by working with a trainer and a nutritionist in his hometown of Atlanta. “When you’re going through it, you hate it and you dread it. But I missed it because I was used to being in training camp.

“And retirement was never an option, not from where I’m at right now. I still have a few years left.”

So, that explains it. Hopefully the Broncos’ tire-kicking was a thorough one.

Running back Darius Walker didn’t make the cut, but he has the chance to make it up.

Walker, released this weekend as the team cut their roster to 53 players, is among the 2009 Denver Broncos‘ eight practice squad players. Also on the scout team are TE Marquez Branson, CB Tony Carter, G Mitch Erickson, CB D.J. Johnson, ILB Braxton Kelley, DL Everette Pedescleaux, and WR Matthew Willis. All eight spent training camp and preseason with the Broncos.

Ex-Broncos thought to be strong practice squad candidates that didn’t get picked up include 2009 seventh round draft pick C Blake Schlueter, undrafted rookie WR Nate Swift and undrafted rookie LB Lee Robinson.

Among Broncos cuts, only C Kory Lichtensteiger was claimed through waivers, being rewarded to the Minnesota Vikings. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers made a claim on DE/OLB Tim Crowder but later rescinded it.

Glad to see Walker sticking around. He’ll be available in a RB pinch. Press release with full player bios after the jump. Click here to read the rest of this entry »

Brandon Marshall

As expected, Brandon Marshall was back at the Denver Broncsos‘ team facility Sunday, reports Mike Klis of the Denver Post. The team had yet to announce Marshall’s return from suspension, or the corresponding roster move.

UPDATE: And it appears they won’t have to. The Broncos have been granted a temporary roster exemption from the NFL, allowing them to keep 54 players on their roster until Monday. Expect an announcement on a released player tonight or tomorrow morning.

Meanwhile, Klis speculates that new New York Jets quarterback Kevin O’Connell, whom the team acquired via trade from the Detroit Lions today, could be used as leverage for a trade for Marshall. The Jets are said to have interest in Marshall, while the Broncos put in a waiver claim for O’Connell last week. Click here to read the rest of this entry »

In what is arguably the NFL’s biggest blockbuster trade since… well, y’know… the New England Patriots are sending defensive lineman Richard Seymour to the Oakland Raiders for Oakland’s 2011 first round draft pick.

The Raiders get a five-time Pro Bowler, three-time champion and locker room leader in Seymour, while the Patriots get a potential upper first round draft choice.

On the surface this looks like a win-win for both teams, and maybe even a bigger win for the Raiders.  Click here to read the rest of this entry »
