Orton Simms

The Denver Broncos expect injured quarterbacks Kyle Orton and Chris Simms to return to practice this week, Mike Klis of the Denver Post reports. Simms is expected to go through a light workout Sunday as he recovers from a high ankle sprain, while Orton is expected to test his injured right index finger Tuesday.

Sunday’s practice ended moments ago, but the Broncos would not confirm whether Simms participated. Workouts are closed to the media until Tuesday.

Meanwhile, rookie QB and preseason star Tom Brandstater waits in the wings. Who suits up next Sunday against Cincinnati all depends on how these beat up signal callers respond to practice.

But the fact that they’re giving it a go at all is a promising sign.

Good news, let’s see Simms get a real shot or hire a new QB for one year. Bstater may blossom in a year or two, not sooner. Orton will never be better than average… Next year’s draft will be QB strong, let’s find out now what we have in Simms. If his potential is similar to Orton’s then let’s pick up Harrington or Garcia and watch Bstater for a year of practices before investing in a QB after this painful season.

(I’m so happy to be rebuilding again. Damn)

  • robtink242

Bradstaters should start against Cincy. He has to much potientail to be benching. I’m with you when you say Orton wouldn’t be more than average. But i think Simms lost his shot.

    WB

They havent rebuilt in the pasdt 15 years Shanahan was here, its about f’ing time if you ask me.

  • DC

I would rank our QBs 1. Brandstater, we already know the potential of Orton and Simms in this league, not great if you ask me so why not go with the TB. This kid has everything you would want in a prototypical NFL QB 2. Simms, Better pocket awarness and feet, arm, decisions, everything than Orton. 3. Orton, Not good awareness, too skidish in the pocket, bad arm, bad feet. I don’t know why he made it in the NFL. If you like dinking and dunking hes your man.

  • http://danstallbaum.com danstall

You guys don’t know squat about football or quarterbacks. Don’t you think Josh McDaniels took a look at hours of film before he took Orton? Orton can make all the throws on a football field, just look at tape. Branstater is a good rookie prospect that you guys were crying about when he was sacked 4 times. He is not ready for a NFL season and why would we do it when we have a proven winner in Kyle Orton. Many of the quarterback questions will be answered after this season and not on this message board IMHO.

  • http://cdn0.sbnation.com/profile_images/111140/La_La_Mascot.jpg WhidbeyBronco

I could see starting Brand S if all else fails… at least it’d be interesting but truly I know he’s not ready. Is he?

Constructive danstall. lol. Josh looked at two 1st rounders when he took the trade and figured he could make anybody an NFL QB. He can but not anybody can be made to grow to the next level… he’s learning that about KO.
    Dee
Shanny turned over 80% of our roster in his last few years. He was rebuilding and NOT going 3-13 like most rebuilding teams do! If not for seven RB’s on IR we’d have been in the play-offs last year WITH THE SECOND YOUNGEST LINE-UP IN THE NFL !!!! DUH?

Time will tell how Josh’s moves (which look like SH!T thus far) compare! I hope hope he proves to be even close to the level of coach Shanny was for us. (if not I hope he fails miserable so as to save us even more years of futility than he already has)

  • http://cdn0.sbnation.com/profile_images/111140/La_La_Mascot.jpg WhidbeyBronco

…already has caused us that is.

  • bw53

I agree this down-on-Orton crap is getting old. Give the kid a chance if Gaffney caught the ball in Seattle Orton would have had a QB rating around 130. Orton is a solid field general. Give him a chance.

  • dean

Orton being crap is getting old. A 4 time pro bowl QB with playoff experience was cut yesterday. Sign him and release this CFL wanna-be.

  • robtink242

wah wah wah. Orton sucks. He won because of the bears sellar D and great run game. On multiple occasion Hester won game for them on ST. One area the bears where never strong at is QB. There is a reason he came for little in that Cutler trade. I sorry that when i look at Orton i don’t see future written over him. You also don’t see us bashing Simms.

  • bw53

Dean & robtink242, Garcia is old as dirt and if he can’t help the raiders…please. Orton is a proven winner and you guys are gonna eat crow. Enough w/ the hating. Brandstater is clearly being groomed as “the future,” but that’s about 3 years down the line. Orton is quality as is Simms, but we haven’t seen a regular season snap yet. I defer to McD who has proven to be an outstanding evaluator of QB talent and well as a teacher. Cassel went from dud to stud. Brady broke the NFL TD record w/ McDs O-coordination (not to mention NE had the most prolific offense in HISTORY!). I think McD is a better evaluator of QB talent than the Denver peanut gallery…freakin’ relax.

  • http://www.webmdreviews.com Robert

Whidbey your idea of what the broncos were last year is ridiculously skewed. I don’t give a damn if the Bronco’s had 20 rb’s go on IR last year that team sucked. The defense was in the bottom 5 and the red zone offense was in the bottom 10. Their only decent win was against an extremely young Falcons team that simply let their guard down in a home game. Once San Diego pulled their heads out of their asses they absolutely dominated the Bronco’s in the second half of the first game which was then given to the Bronco’s by a stupid call or they would have never been in playoff contention in the first place.

We lost to Kansas City, Buffalo, a decimated Jaguars team and were blown out in the second game against Raiders 31 – 10 for crying out loud.

Take a deep breathe and lay off the hateraid for a few days because its making you say random nonsense.

  • skaz

the “click here to read the rest of the article” when theres only like three more lines to it is annoying

  • robtink242

bw53 get real. No one would rather Matt Cassel or Kyle Orton over Jay Cutler. If i’m not mistaken Bill was in charge of the Pats. He wouldn’t have half as much offseason shit as McD. Last time i check Charlie W. was in charge of thos super bowl offenses not McD. McD was givin the second best offense in football but he could leave it as was. So stop talking f***. This team has so much to prove from last season. McD had a awesome 07 as OC. yeah his responsiblity was the Offense he could sign, trade or cut anyone on that team.

  • BLF

    BW53:
Ort is no solid field general. IMO he is very shaky and it showed in the preseason.

  • bw53

robtink you have whipped yourself into a lather where I would contend you are talking (as you so eloquently put it) F***!

Never did I say Orton had any where near the raw skills of Cutler. But it ain’t a comparison of Orton to Cutler. It is a comparison of Orton & Chicago’s First and Third and First vs. Cutler. It’s a team sport. All the haters talk about how bad the team is–news flash McD is addressing the whole team situation.

  • bw53

    BLF

Read what Urlacher thought about Orton as a leader. He would know.

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

skaz – duly noted. We’re trying to keep more stories up top so only posting small parts to the front page. A lot of fast and furious news going on.

We’ll try not to do that for short posts.

  • dean

    bw53,

What has Orton ever won other than a neckbeard competition?

  • Steeplebomb

AAAHHHH! Enough with this “Brandstater is better than Orton” nonsense!

    Orton’s stats v. Chicago:
    12/16, 96 yds, 89.6 QB rating
    Big Tater’s stats v. Arizona:
16/30, 187 yds, INT, 58.6 QB rating (not to mention that he was mostly playing against 2nd and 3rd stringers)

OMG! We’re saved! The rookie isn’t totally inept! That must mean he’s better than Orton because everyone knows that Orton is the worst position player of any team of any sport in the history of mankind! People need to chill.

  • bw53

One thing tied Drew Bree’s single game record at Purdue.

Orton had a shit offense to work with in Chicago. He has much more to work with here. I believe he has happy feet in the pocket because he used to have to get the passes off immediately to avoid sacks. Now McD wants him to stay longer and check down, which will take time for him to smooth out.

  • dean

    bw,

Didn’t realize tying a record was considered winning.

Ron Dayne had a few records in college too, should we make him our starting running back? Purdue also had a guy by the name of Taylor Stubblefield who set the career receptions mark. We should proably cut Eddie Royal for him.

Kyle Orton’s a joke and wouldn’t be a backup for any other team in this league.

  • bw53

You are awfully certain that Orton is a “JOKE.” Strong language for a QB whose 10 rookie wins are the second best since the 1970 NFL-AFL merger.

Over the season either you will be vindicated or I will be–the rest is just rhetoric. Regardless the outcome, your tone is snide and obnoxious so I’m not surprised that you would have a difficult time as seeing the cup as half full.

  • Truman

Kyle you guys have done an amazing job this off season. Truly incredible.

  • http://myspace.com/paraleipsis jchase8410

god I can’t wait until sunday so we can stop with this crap! Kyle Orton is not the waste of space everyone thinks if is. He had 1 bad game, the first game of the pre-season no less, from which he bounced back pretty admirably I thought. He has shown some good zip on the ball from what I have seen. All the people who have this weird love affair with Cutler’s laser, rocket arm need to get over it. He is gone, and no amount of bitching is going to bring him back. Pull your face out of his ass!

  • dean

10 wins and still got benched for Rex Grossman before the playoffs. That defense was so dominant it still went to the Super Bowl regardless. ubby Brister went 5-0 in the regular season with a Super Bowl team, Denver probably should of started him over Elway in the Super Bowl. Trent Dilfer also won a Super Bowl, we should see if he can play. He didn’t have nearly the offense players Denver has now.

  • kerry

Orton sucks. plain and simple. the level of desperation coming from the Orton lovers is becoming quite deep. anyone with any common sense knows Orton is a joke and not suited to be a starter in this league. its really quite ridiculous yet comical at the same time. lest look at this:

the Broncos lose the last three games and everybody blames Cutler for it yet the defnese gave up over 30 to Carolina, over 30 to Buffalo and over 50 to San Diego, but that was all Cutler fault.

THEN the otherside of the argument is “oh its everybody elses fault why Orton didnt do well in Chicago” then “Oh its Gaffneys fault that Orton didnt have a percentage of 130.0 the bottomline is you Orton lovers are finding ANY WAY to justify Orton over Cutler. you are so desperate to find a way to show that Orton is the answer when in fact he is not. you are so afraid that Orton is gonna bomb that you incessantly bash Cutler for everything when secretly you probably know that Orton is a bad decision as our QB. you all talk about Orton could have had a 130.0 percentage yet fail to mention how he threw 4 INT’s (one left handed) and only 1 TD while losing 3 games. of course there is gonna be excuses all around for that.

  • bw53

dean I knew kerry was universally acknowledged as the unpleasant guy (putting that nicely) around here… But whoa, who put the turd in your punchbowl. Hate Orton all you’d like. I find you 8th grade debate tactics tiresome, and I’m done wasting my effort with you…

  • kerry

    BW53:

hate Orton? who says i hate Orton. i just call it like i see it.not proclaiming him a great QB simply because he wears a Broncos doesnt mean i hate him. and the guy clearly has shown to be a bum as a QB. you are done wasting effort because i actually posted facts and you cant counter them with anything. dont worry you arent the first to do that.

  • dean

8th grade debate tactics? You’re the one who used the term “turd in your punchbowl”. You mentioned two reasons why he would be good with Denver. One, he tied a single game record of Drew Brees while in college and he won 10 games his rookie year. I’m sorry i’m not confident in either of those reasons.

  • bw53

    bullshit dean:

“Ron Dayne had a few records in college too, should we make him our starting running back? Purdue also had a guy by the name of Taylor Stubblefield who set the career receptions mark. We should proably cut Eddie Royal for him.”

That’s the sophomoric crap that I’m talking about, and you know it.

Kerry, was calling dean the orton hater, everything just seems to make you grumpy.

  • dean

Hey, you’re the one who stated Orton was a winner and we should show him support because he tied a record in college. I can’t help it, if your reasoning is flawed.

  • http://cdn0.sbnation.com/profile_images/111140/La_La_Mascot.jpg WhidbeyBronco

    lol
Robert? So we’re better now? One bad call? Calls go both ways. Regardless, we were a pretty good team last year considering we we’d been rebuilding for two years!!! Look at the age of our stars last year!! Cutler/BM/Royal/Clady Wow did the D need work! but what a nice talent base Shanny was giving us for our next run!!! It’s HARD TO WIN IN THIS LEAGUE!! Great coaches go years and years without winning!! God how did folks like you stand it before we won the two Superbowls?

  • bw53

I’ll keep it real simple for you dean: 21-12 = winner.

  • dean

    And how many playoff wins?

The year the Bears won 10 games:

    Orton: 51.6%, 1,869 yards, 9 TD’s, 13 INT’s and a 59.7 QB rating.

    Bears Offense 16.2 pts game
    Bears Defense 12.6 pts game

You can say the Bears won 10 games because of Orton. I’m going to say they won 10 games despite Orton.
