The NFL has announced the order for the early rounds of the 2013 NFL Draft, with the compensatory selections and rounds 3-7 to be announced later in March.  Here is a look at the Denver Broncos‘ six selections:

Round 1 (28th Overall)

Round 2 (58th Overall)

Round 3 (90th Overall)

Round 4 (TBA Overall)

Round 5 (TBA Overall)

Nobody knows who the Broncos starting running back will be in 2013, but it’s obvious that the team will be adding at least one player to the backfield this offseason.  The New York Jets‘ Shonn Greene was thrown into the conversation by ESPN New York’s Rich Cimini on Sunday:

There has been some buzz here on the future of RB Shonn Greene, an unrestricted free agent.  Spies say Greene, coming off an underwhelming 1,000-yard season, is expected to draw interest from the Falcons and Broncos…

The Broncos don’t have a clear-cut No. 1 back.  The Jets, looking for a speed back to pair with Bilal Powell, are prepared to part ways with Greene.

The Broncos have already also been linked to St. Louis Rams running back Steven Jackson, but it sounds like Jackson wants to return to St. Louis. Jackson, 29, is two years older and fourteen pounds heavier than Greene (who weighs in at 226 pounds).

Be glad the Broncos are not a British team…

B/R’s Matt Miller has Denver’s Ryan Clady and Orlando Franklin ranked in the Top Five at their respective positions.

Earlier this week, quarterback Peyton Manning sent Dwight Freeney a text telling him to come play in Denver.  The text was probably just support from a former teammate; Freeney probably won’t land in Denver.

Pro Bowl guard Zane Beadles is Denver’s only starting offensive lineman on schedule for full participation in the team’s offseason program, which means the Broncos will give a lot of attention to linemen at the Combine this weekend.

The NFL’s 2013 free agent signing period will begin on March 12.  The NFL Draft will take place on April 25-27.

Before building through the draft, the Denver Broncos will look to plug some holes in free agency, including at the running back position.

On Tuesday, the Denver Post‘s Mike Klis wrote that he expects the team to go shopping for a RB next month:

Age (31), injury, and a $2.5 million salary in 2013 make Willis McGahee vulnerable. The Broncos will shop for a running back. And I believe they will look first for a veteran free agent with tread on his tires because pass protecting Peyton Manning is a high priority for a Broncos running back.

At this point, McGahee seems to be expendable and behind him, the Broncos have two smaller backs in Knowshon Moreno and youngster Ronnie Hillman. Denver will probably go after a power back, and one of them is expected to hit the open market.

To add size to the backfield, the Broncos should give the St. Louis Rams‘ Steven Jackson a long, hard look.  According to Rotoworld, Jackson (6’2″, 240 pounds) is due to make $7 million this season but has the option of voiding his contract and testing the free-agent market, which he is expected to do.

Klis has already linked Jackson to the Broncos and CBS4‘s Vic Lombardi has also suggested that the team may go that route.  Your move, Broncos.

The Denver Broncos will probably have a new starting middle linebacker this season, but the team may not have to go far to find him.

“The Broncos won’t be looking for a middle linebacker, even though Keith Brooking is a free agent and Joe Mays is coming off a season-ending injury. The plan is for Nate Irving and Steve Johnson to compete for the starting job at that position, with Irving having the edge because of experience.

“Irving was Denver’s third-round draft pick in 2011 and was hurt as much as any player by the NFL lockout that year, but he flashed ability in 2012. Johnson was an undrafted rookie last season,” the Denver Post‘s Mike Klis wrote on Sunday afternoon.

Klis went on to note that the team will use their franchise tag on left tackle on Ryan Clady as early as Tuesday and would like to re-sign safety/special teams ace David Bruton before the start of free agency (March 12).  You can find a list of free agents the Broncos may target right here.

Straight out of the rumor mill comes word that the Denver Broncos may part ways with 25 year old running back Knowshon Moreno this spring.

“Moreno, the 12th pick of the 2009 draft, may be a former Bronco before long. Moreno never has performed up to where he was chosen in the draft, and he has a cap number of $3.28 million in 2013.

“Moreno impressed coaches in 2012 by coming on strong late with two 100 yard rushing games in December and even was voted AFC offensive player of the week, but his tenure in Denver mostly is notable for injuries and fumbles,” NFP‘s Dan Pompei wrote on Sunday morning.

It seems more likely that Pompei is speculating rather than reporting information received from the team, but the latter is possible.  Either way, Moreno’s time in Denver appears to be coming to an end.

On Friday, the Indianapolis Colts announced that free agents Dwight Freeney and Austin Collie will not be re-signed this offseason.  Because both players have connections to Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning, speculation as to where the two players would land started with Denver.

Yesterday, Big Pete touched on the subject of going after Freeney, and has also brought up the possibilities of other big-name players including safety Charles Woodson and cornerback Darrelle Revis.  Another name that has been tossed around is veteran free agent Ed Reed.

All of those players have a few things in common: they are experienced defensive veterans that want to go out on top with a contender to finish their respective careers.  But how about the offensive side of the ball?

In 2014, wide receiver Eric Decker will be a free agent and one year later, Demaryius Thomas will be seeking big money.  The 36-year-old Brandon Stokley is currently a free agent and behind him, the Broncos’ receiving corps lacks talent beyond Decker and Thomas (click their names for video highlights from last season).

The Green Bay Packers released Strong Safety Charles Woodson yesterday to free up the $10 million he was owed in 2013. As we all know, Charles Woodson won the Heisman Trophy in 1997 (edging out Peyton Manning) after leading Michigan to the National Championship. He was drafted by the Raiders, before moving on to the Packers.

Woodson was an All-Pro cornerback and is probably destined for Canton. Like our very own Champ Bailey is rumored to consider when the time is right (in the next handful of years), Woodson moved from Cornerback to Safety once his lost step became two lost steps.

Woodson’s position is of vital importance. He currently plays the Strong Safety position, which is occupied by Mike Adams. This is important because Rahim Moore plays the Free Safety position. This would give the Broncos the Safety tandem of Rahim “the dream killer” Moore and Charles Woodson. They would join Champ Bailey and Chris Harris in our starting back field.

The Indianapolis Colts informed Dwight Freeney today that they will not re-sign him, and thus, he is free to sign with whoever he wants.

The Broncos have a lot of money tied up in the younger Elvis Dumervil (Freeney is 33; Dumervil is 29), and not much on the other side of the line, where Freeney plays.  Sure, the Broncos have Derek Wolfe, but he’s better inside.  Robert Ayers plays Freeney’s position, but only has one year left on his contract.

Should the Broncos make a push for Freeney?  If they had to let Ayers go to do it, would you? What if they had to let Doom go? Would you still go after Freeney?
