Marshall

The Denver Broncos announced their finalized 53-man roster Saturday evening, with a few minor surprises but nothing wholly unexpected. However, this roster won’t be finalized for long: an issue with one player will force the Broncos to tweak the roster again Sunday. Who on the roster could possibly be giving the Broncos trouble?

Brandon Marshall, who else?

Marshall isn’t listed among the 53 – he’s still listed undert Reserved/Suspended. So tomorrow, when his team-imposed suspension is scheduled to end, Marshall will have to be officially added back to the Broncos roster. Whether he likes it or not.

Marshall’s return does bring up some very real questions: what do the Broncos do to make room? If they add a player released by another team this weekend, how do they tweak the roster? They have several options. Let’s break it down. Click here to read the rest of this entry »

The Denver Broncos finalized their 53-man roster Saturday, releasing 12 players, placing Josh Bell on waived/injured and signing DE Vonnie Holliday. Players released today include DE/OLB Tim Crowder and RB Darius Walker.

By our count, this left 54 players. Then we remembered that Brandon Marshall‘s suspension technically ends tomorrow, so until then he is not included in the 53-man roster count. Expect another announcement tomorrow.

Vonnie Holliday

The Denver Broncos were taking a look at veteran defensive end Vonnie Holliday this weekend.

Apparently, they liked what they saw.

Mike Klis of the Denver Post reports that the Broncos signed Holliday (6-5, 288) today. Holliday, 33, is expected to see time in the team’s defensive line rotation and compete for a starting spot at defensive end.

“He’s versatile so he can play wherever the team decides to play him,” Holliday’s agent Cary Fabrikant tells the Post. “He’s an extremely talented football player who’s been a starter for long periods of time.”

Crowder

Keep updated with all the latest roster cuts here.

The Denver Broncos‘ 2007 draft class took its first permanent hit Saturday, as the team released second round draft pick DE/OLB Tim Crowder.

Draft classmates Jarvis Moss (DE/OLB, 1st round) and Marcus Thomas (DT, 4th round), also thought to be on the bubble, have been told they have a spot on the 53-man roster, FOX 31’s Josina Anderson reports.

According to reports, the Broncos staff told Moss that if he “played his heart out” during Thursday’s preseason finale, he would have a shot at the roster. Moss’ four-tackle performance against Arizona that included a sack, forced fumble and two passes defensed must have been enough.

In two years, Crowder played in 19 games (one start) and tallied 16 tackles (13 solo) and four sacks.

UPDATE: The Broncos finalized their roster Saturday, although more moves are expected. See your 2009 Denver Broncos 53-man roster here.

After releasing 10 players Friday and placing one on Injured Reserve, the Denver Broncos continue their push toward the final 53-man roster Saturday morning.

The biggest surprise thus far is RB Darius Walker. Walker was the Broncos’ leading rusher in the preseason, and many (including yours truly) felt he had a good shot at making the roster over LaMont Jordan. That wasn’t the case, although it isn’t clear if Jordan will make the team either.

Below is the updated list of released players, which we’ll keep updated throughout the day (full list, including Friday’s cuts, after the jump):

Released Players:
TE Marquez Branson
CB Tony Carter
DE Nic Clemons
DE/OLB Tim Crowder
OG Mitch Erickson
S Vernon Fox
CB D.J. Johnson
ILB Braxton Kelley
DL Everette Pedescleaux
DB Antwain Spann

The Denver Broncos are bringing in free agent defensive lineman Vonnie Holliday for a visit this weekend, the Miami Herald’s Armando Salguero reports. The former Packer and Chief was released by his most recent team, the Miami Dolphins, in March.

This will be Holliday’s second visit with the Broncos this offseason, and per the report, if he is deemed healthy the Broncos are expected to sign the 34 33-year-old to their active roster.

Holliday started at right defensive end in the Dolphins’ 3-4 scheme last year. Click here to read the rest of this entry »

Several readers have pointed us in the direction of this AP article, which casually states that neither Chris Simms nor Kyle Orton will be ready to go against Cincinnati next Sunday, and that rookie QB Tom Brandstater will start.

For our tastes, the statement was made a little too casually. News like this wouldn’t be buried three paragraphs deep under a “Broncos release nine players” headline, it would be front page news.

We spoke to the Broncos; indeed, the report is mistaken in that there is no update on the statuses of Orton or Simms for the season opener September 13th. Click here to read the rest of this entry »
