Denver Broncos blog, news and rumors

Carter was arrested on Saturday in Las Vegas.

On the eve of the NFL’s Free Agency Denver Broncos safety Quinton Carter was arrested and charged on felony charges of cheating at a Las Vegas casino craps game.

The young safety is being charged on three counts (each carrying a maximum of six years) police are alleging that he was adding money to his bets after the dice had been cast.

Carter was arrested Saturday night at Palace Station, he is also dealing with a charge for failure to complete counseling on a 2011 marijuana charge.

Earlier in March John Elway justified a lack of interest in free agent safeties by stating that Carter would be back in the rotation and that he had faith at him returning full strength. Carter was on injured reserve for all but three games in the 2012 season.

The Broncos have made a flurry of moves in free agency, but they are not done yet.

Denver is close to the $123 million 2013 salary cap limit, but plan to create more space through the Elvis Dumervil situation and there are a host of other candidates to be released.  For now, the team’s top priority is working out something with Dumervil.

But the team may not be done signing free agents just yet.  According to CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora, the team is considering Connor Barwin, Dwight Freeney and Richard Seymour as potential replacements for Dumervil and may still add more depth to the secondary.

That depth in the secondary could come via veteran Nnamdi Asomugha, who has reportedly drawn interest from Denver.  If the team is looking for a safety rather than a cornerback, the draft may be their best option.  A safety who figured to compete for a starting gig this summer is Quinton Carter, but he was recently arrested in Vegas and could face up to six years in prison on charges of cheating in a casino craps game.

The draft also appears to be where the team is planning to acquire a running back.  On Thursday, Steven Jackson landed with the Atlanta Falcons, eliminating the chances of Denver landing a big-name back through free agency.

Eddie Lacy and Montee Ball are both younger and cheaper, anyway.

Lost in the news (and possibly lost because of the news) of the Denver Broncos signing cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie was the fact that there is another Philadelphia Eagles corner still in play here. The sweepstakes for former Eagles (and Dream Teamer) cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha has been narrowed to five teams with the Broncos amongst those remaining according to ProFootballTalk.

What’s that you say? Denver signed Drayton Florence Rodgers-Cromartie, no way they sign Tracy Porter Nnamdi Asomugha as well! Yes, that is what we thought in 2012 too. Florence ended up being jettisoned prior to the season and Porter went on to win AFC Defensive Player of the Week (amongst other things).

So yeah, as long as the Broncos have money to spend and as long as Asomugha wants to play for a contender both Denver and the four time All Pro will remain on each other’s radars.

Those other teams interested in him? The Houston Texans, New Orleans Saints, Arizona Cardinals and off course the San Francisco 49ers.

At the moment you are still probably a bit shell shocked from the gaggle of yesterday’s signings. Thus far the Denver Broncos have signed five new players and re-signed eight, that is thirteen salaries that weren’t counted when you were figuring out how much the team had left to spend in free agency. Of course there is still the issue of Elvis Dumervil, which will free up a few millions one way or another.

Just to recap here are the salaries for the newest (and renewed) Broncos:

Player Length Amount
Dominique Rodgers-
Cromartie One year $5 million
Terrance Knighton Two years $4.5 million
Stewart Bradley One year $1.1 million
Wes Welker Two years $12 million
Kevin Vickerson Two years $5 million
Louis Vasquez Four years $23.5 million
David Bruton Three years $4.5 million
Lance Ball One year $1.323 million
Britton Colquitt One year $1.323 million
Chris Clark One year $1.323 million
Mitch Unrein One year $555K
Tony Carter One year $555K
Ryan Clady One year $9.828 million

The Denver Broncos had a busy day on Wednesday, ultimately signing four free agents.

The team started by landing All-Pro receiver Wes Welker to a two-year, $12-million deal.  The signing sent shock waves across the NFL.

Next came the signing of linebacker Stewart Bradley to a one-year deal.  Bradley is expected to compete for the starting MLB gig in Denver.

Another defender, defensive tackle Terrance Knighton, agreed to a two-year deal.  Knighton figures to become a starter after being reunited with Jack Del Rio.

The team finished their busy day (presumably finished, anyway, it’s only 9:30 p.m. MT), by signing cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie to a two-year deal.

Denver will hold multiple press conferences tomorrow at Dove Valley to introduce Welker, Knighton and Rodgers-Cromartie.  Welker’s press conference will be streamed on DenverBroncos.com and we will provide coverage on Facebook and Twitter.

Yesterday, the team locked up defensive tackle Kevin Vickerson for two years and brought in Chargers guard Louis Vasquez with a four-year deal.

Meanwhile, Jason Hunter has left Denver and signed with the Raiders and Elvis Dumervil’s contract situation remains unresolved.  There are several candidates on the market if the team chooses to release Dumervil.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter has just released news that the Denver Broncos have signed free agent cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. Rodgers-Cromartie comes to Denver after playing for the Philadelphia Eagles for the past two season by way of being part of a trade that sent quarterback Kevin Kolb from the Eagles to the Arizona Cardinals in exchange for Rodgers-Cromartie and a second round draft pick.

The one-year contract will pay DRC $5 million in 2013, which is $1 million less than what Wes Welker will receive.

Rodgers-Cromartie was selected in the first round (16th overall) in the 2008 NFL Draft. The 26-year old corner had three interceptions, 17 pass deflections and 51 total tackles in 2012.

He was a Pro Bowl alternate in 2009, his second season in the NFL; Philadelphia switched him to his natural nickle corner position in 2011 when he joined the team.

With Elvis Dumervil and the Broncos currently in a contract dispute, we figured the team would lean on Jason Hunter in 2013 if Dumervil left.

Uh, about that.

Turns out that Hunter, a free agent, has signed with the divisional rival Oakland Raiders.  Had he stayed in Denver, Hunter likely would have been a rotational rusher this season.

The Broncos have improved the interior of their line by re-signing defensive tackle Kevin Vickerson and signing defensive tackle Terrance Knighton to two-year deals.  But if Dumervil does not agree to restructure his contract and is released, defensive end will quickly become a position of need for the team.

Obvious candidates to replace Dumervil are Dwight Freeney and Osi Umenyiora, while Shaun Phillips could also come into play.  Of course, if Dumervil agrees to restructure his contract before Saturday, when his $12 million 2013 salary becomes guaranteed, Denver won’t have to worry about finding a replacement.

Now, we wait.  Your move, Broncos.

In a move that sent shock waves across the NFL, the Denver Broncos signed former New England Patriots wide receiver Wes Welker to a two-year, $12 million deal on Wednesday afternoon.  The signing, as big as it is for Denver’s offense, was also a defensive move.

As team executive of football operations John Elway noted, snatching Welker away from Tom Brady‘s offense ensures that the Broncos will never have to deal with covering arguably the best slot receiver in the NFL again.  Considering that Brady agreed to restructure his contract to help the Patriots re-sign Welker, we’re guessing Brady isn’t very excited about the news.

Welker has been elected to the Pro Bowl in five consecutive seasons and his five 100-catch seasons represent an NFL record.  In Denver, Welker will join rising stars Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker, who both recorded 1,000-yard seasons in 2012.

It’s been a busy week day hour in Dove Valley. Signed are LB Steward Bradley and a little player with a big name — Wes Welker.

And now, just signed is a big player with a smaller name — defensive tackle Terrance Knighton. Knighton, a 330-lb. run stuffer, hails from Jacksonville, meaning he’ll be reunited with Jack Del Rio in Denver.

Broncos Executive John Elway announced the two-year deal on Twitter.

Combined with the re-signing of Kevin Vickerson, the Broncos improved defensively early in free agency. What a week day hour, eh Broncos Country?!

The Denver Broncos have agreed to terms with free agent wide receiver Wes Welker on a two-year deal, team executive John Elway announced via Twitter on Wednesday afternoon.

The two-year, $12 million deal will keep Welker in Denver through the 2014 season, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.  Since 2007, Welker has posted five 1,000-yard seasons and scored 37 touchdowns with the New England Patriots.

In Denver, Welker is expected to become quarterback Peyton Manning‘s slot receiver, with fourth-year receivers Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker expected to remain with the team.  Click here to read the rest of this entry »
