Denver Broncos blog, news and rumors

As promised, this mock is going to get interesting. The third overall pick may make sense, but our GM today, bpdouglass, has some shocking words to part upon us Bronco fans.

You really need to read what he has to say after the jump.

With the third pick of the 2012 interactive mock draft… the Minnesota Vikings select…

Let it be clear this is written several days in advance with qualification: if the quarterbacks don’t go 1 and 2, I’d withdraw my participation on grounds the folks at 1 and 2 are clearly more interested in smoking meth than serving a quality mock draft.

They are going 1 and 2. Indy is trading out and Washington is taking RG3. That’s in ink and it’s done. I can assure you Minnesota SHOULD trade up but they will not… and I’m not going to drag this entire draft through the mud trying. Click here to read the rest of this entry »

Former Houston Texans tight end Joel Dreessen is going to sign with the Denver Broncos, according to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle.  Dreessen is expected to sign with the team later today.

Per McClain, Dreessen decided to sign with the Broncos despite a heavy push by Houston to retain him.  Dreessen, who grew up in Fort Morgan, Colo., and played collegiate football at Colorado State, opted to return home and play with quarterback Peyton Manning in Denver.

The Broncos versatile fullback, Spencer Larsen, has signed with the New England Patriots.

Larsen is now reunited with New England offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels.

This report is per Greg A. Bedard.

Was close, now the Patriots and FB/LB Spencer Larsen have agreed on a two-year deal, a league source said.

Larsen has been a special teams ace, a great blocking fullback, and even started a game at linebacker his rookie year. He quickly gained the support of the fans with big hits on special teams plays like this one.

Good luck in New England, Spencer. Bronco Nation will miss you.

Tracy Porter in Super Bowl XLIV (Groll/AP Photo)

The Denver Broncos signed free agent cornerback Tracy Porter to a one-year deal worth $4 million, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

Porter is most famous for returning a Peyton Manning interception 74 yards for a touchdown to seal Super Bowl XLIV for his New Orleans Saintsa few years ago; now he’ll be trying to repeat the feat in practice.

Porter, 25, will likely start opposite Champ Bailey for the Broncos.

Good deal for the Broncos to see if Porter can stick in the NFL as a starting cornerback and finish a year healthy, something he has never done. Now it’s time to shore up that defensive tackle position.

Stealing Signs contest

Over the last few years, Detroit artist Mark Penxa has produced an ongoing series of original sports portraits called Stealing Signs, an homage to American sports legends past to present. The unique twist? Stealing Signs is a 100% crowd sourced series, where sports fans nominate and select which athletes are painted next.

Quarterback Peyton Manning will add to John Elway's legacy of elite quarterbacks to play for the Denver Broncos. (Doug Pensinger/Getty Images)

The Denver Broncos announced the signing of a sure-fire, first ballot Hall of Famer Tuesday.

A future Hall of Famer who said he wants to retire a Denver Bronco.

Four-time NFL MVP Peyton Manning will certainly be immortalized in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio one day. His bronze bust will stand in the same room as the man who got him to Denver, John Elway. But will he be enshrined as a Colt, where he spent his first 14 seasons, or as a Bronco?

(Editor’s Note: This post was originally published Wednesday March 21 at 1:15 p.m. Within moments of publishing, news broke that Tebow’s trade had been nullified. Now that it has been finalized we thought we’d bump it back to your attention. Original post follows.)

A handful of thoughts on the Broncos‘ trade of Tim Tebow to the New York Jets.

Taking a bite of the Big Apple — Denver, Colorado is a football town with smart football fans, and it couldn’t survive the thriving media monster that is Tebowmania. More specifically, Kyle Orton couldn’t survive it. Meanwhile, New York is the media center of the world, and even in football contexts, it thrives on drama and controversy. An ESPN poll already has the majority of voters saying Tebow will become Jets starting QB this season. We’re two hours into it, and Tebowmania NY has already begun. How many incomplete passes does Mark Sanchez need to throw before fans are calling for Tebow? Two? Zero?

After a shocking trade for the first overall pick, I am proud to present you something a bit more normal.

Our second GM to pick is Doom92.

2. Washington Redskins Logo Robert Griffin III, QB, Baylor

For us this pick is a no brain-er. No trade needed or intended here, we are going to get our man in Robert Griffin the third. RG3 will give us the weapon at QB that we have desperately needed for so many years. Before we made this move to move up the draft board Mike, Kyle and my self spent many hours in discussion over this. It was never our intent to go after Luck.

We never felt like any other QB available would give us the flexibility that RG3 will give and would have gladly given up more than we did to land the opportunity to select him as our number one man. We are happy however that we didn’t need to move into the #1 spot for the best QB for many drafts to come. Click here to read the rest of this entry »

The Denver Broncos have agreed to terms with free agent wide receiver Andre Caldwell on a two year deal, according to PFT.  Caldwell first reported the news himself on Twitter.

Caldwell was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in the third round of the 2008 NFL Draft after playing collegiate football at the University of Florida — with New York Jets quarterback Tim Tebow.  A fifth year player, Caldwell is expected to become Denver’s third or fourth receiver.

Though he has never posted overly impressive numbers, Caldwell has shown potential with the Bengals.  With Peyton Manning as the quarterback, all of the receivers on Denver’s roster have seen their stock rise.

Denver now has six receivers on the active roster with Demaryius Thomas, Eric Decker, Caldwell, D’Andre Goodman, Jason Hill and Matthew Willis.  Fellow receiver Mark Dell is listed on the team’s injured reserve list and receivers Greg Orton, Tyler Grisham and Tim Toone were signed to future contracts earlier in the year.

Caldwell, 26, is a 6-0, 190 pound receiver who has caught 124 passes in his career for 1,172 yards and six touchdowns (including three last season — one of which came against Denver in Week 2 of last season).

Caldwell adds decent depth to Denver’s receiver corps.  Do you approve of the signing?

Tim Tebow has been traded to the New York Jets for fourth and sixth round draft picks in the 2012 NFL Draft. The Denver Broncos also sent the Jets a seventh round draft pick in the trade. The deal was originally agreed upon this morning and, after several snags, finalized this evening. Statements from the Broncos brass below —

STATEMENT FROM BRONCOS EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT OF FOOTBALL OPERATIONS JOHN ELWAY ON QB TIM TEBOW:

“Tim Tebow deserves an enormous amount of credit for what he accomplished and how he carried himself during his time with the Broncos. From taking over a 1-4 team and leading it to the playoffs to energizing our fans and this community, Tim left an extraordinary mark on this organization. His time in Denver will always hold a special place in Broncos history.

“As a former player, I know the last two weeks were not easy for Tim. He was put in a difficult situation, and I commend him for how he handled it with the same first-class manner he displayed throughout his career in Denver.
