Many said in 2011 that Von Miller couldn't be a 4-3 OLB in the NFL. (Image courtesy of the Associated Press)

It’s that time of year again.  The time of year when scouts and draft analysts act like they know everything there is to know about every prospect.

In reality, quite often the exact opposite is true.  The NFL Draft essentially is a crapshoot, which is why players like Jarvis Moss and Aaron Curry have gone early while others like Mike Wallace and Le’Ron McClain fell further on draft day than they should have.

Some dogmatically give their opinions on players based on incorrect assessments (i.e. those that said JaMarcus Russell was a worthy first overall draft pick and others that said Cam Newton wouldn’t make it in the NFL).  There are a handful of reasons for such fallible scouting reports, personal bias, personal gain (such as pending relationships with player agents), misinformation and the inability to predict the future are all factors.

Then there are just the dead-wrong skills and ability assessments.  Take for example this portion of WalterFootball.com‘s 2011 Von Miller scouting report (with my thoughts in italics):  Click here to read the rest of this entry »

Broncos begin laying the foundation for Manning’s new offense | Washington Post
Out with the old option. In with the new no-huddle. The Denver Broncos are getting their first taste of the hurry-up-at-altitude offense that Peyton Manning will unleash on the NFL this fall if everything keeps going well with his surgically repaired neck.

Joe Mays is the Broncos’ starting middle linebacker with a new contract that will guarantee him $4 million this year so perhaps he was feeling a bit frisky Thursday when he dropped the quote of the 2012 offseason on the Denver media.

According the Denver Post, the Denver Broncos made an attempt to add Asante Samuel to the roster. Per the Denver Post, there were two proposals made. Both deals did not work out, and the deal will most likely not be made.

However, the Broncos no longer believe they can strike a deal, even though trade talks advanced to the stage where the team presented two proposals — one for a late-round draft pick and the other involving a player.

Asante Samuel is 31 years old and due 10 million is 2012 and 11.5 million in 2013. If the deal would have taken place, the Broncos would have still retained the oldest secondary in the NFL.

The Broncos recently added Tracy Porter and released Andre’ Goodman, which added more youth to the secondary since Porter is only 25.

What do you think Bronco Nation? Should the Broncos pushed a bit harder for Samuel, or are you happy with the secondary as is?

Donta Hightower

Dont'a Hightower, Alabam inside linebacker 2012 NFL draft prospect

Recently I have taken an in depth look at the college prospects available at our largest areas of need on offense (running back) and defense (defensive tackle (part 1, part 2). With less than two short weeks to the 2012 NFL draft I am breaking down which prospects will be on the Broncos radar pick-by-pick (Editor’s note: Geoff submitted this for review days ago. We’ll definitely lend him a hand in getting this pick-by-pick analysis ready if needed). To get the excitement flowing in ample amounts we will start, here today, at our first round pick, #25.

The RB and DT prospects I examined at this pick include Doug Martin (RB Boise State), David Wilson (RB Virginia Tech), Devon Still (DT Penn State), Michael Brockers (DT LSU), and Jerel Worthy (DT Michigan State). Many were surprised in last years draft when the Broncos selected  Texas A&M OLB Von Miller over Alabama DT Marcel Dareus. With this in mind Broncos fans must be prepared for the front office squad to select the best player available over drafting strictly for need. Here are the players that could be of great interest to the Denver Broncos at pick #25.

Broncos will find depth at RB in draft, but not in first round | Denver Post
Just how high of a profile that new back has remains to be seen. That said, there is some depth on the board overall at the position, but that depth really comes through in the second and third rounds — i.e., the second day of the draft.

The 2012 NFL Draft is just one week away and barring a trade, the Denver Broncos will be selecting 25th overall in the first round.  Below are five prospects I like for the Broncos, if they fall to No. 25.

1.  Dont’a Hightower (6-2, 265 lbs.), MLB, Alabama (Highlights, Scouting Report).

Notes:   Of the many NFL.com mocks that I have seen, Hightower has often been available when Denver comes on the clock (of course, anything can happen on draft day — so mocks should be taken with a several tablespoons of salt).  If Hightower is still on the board when Denver makes their pick, he would be my selection of choice, followed closely by the prospect listed below.   Click here to read the rest of this entry »
