Tebow

There is a rumor going around NFL circles that there is “little support” for Denver quarterback Tim Tebow in the Broncos organization.

Stemming from John Elway‘s comments on Kyle Orton and bolstered by Michael Lombardi‘s NFL.com report, the theory goes that quarterback is a “huge need” for the Broncos as they enter the scouting period before April’s draft. Says Lombardi: “Most members of the Broncos who were there when the Tebow pick was made are looking to distance themselves from the choice, which is a classic way for things to operate in the NFL.”

Surprisingly to me, people are buying into it. Click here to read the rest of this entry »

So Tim Tebow isn’t going to be handed the Denver Broncos quarterback starting job. That’s fine. Tim Tebow is all about earning the starting job.

In a wide-ranging interview with The Florida Times-Union, Tebow discusses the NFL learning curve and his working relationship with Kyle Orton (“I always hope he does his best because that’ll help the Broncos”). He also dishes on his autobiography, personal life, and more. It’s worth checking out.

In particular, one nugget that stood out was his QB self-assessment now as compared to a year ago. Tebow believes his hard work this offseason is paying serious dividends:

I feel that I’m definitely ready to compete for it (the starting QB job). I’m excited for that challenge. I’ve worked extremely hard this offseason. I’m looking forward to the opportunity to lead this team and try to win games. I don’t feel like it’s even close from last year to where I am now. In fact, it’s not even close to where I am now from the end of last season. I’m much more prepared.

If that’s the case, it’ll be hard for Orton to keep Tebow at bay — not without putting in the same amount of effort and preparation, day in and day out.

Frankly, that’s the way it should be.

Denver Broncos wide receiver Brandon Lloyd, as if answering our very poll question this week, gives us this tidbit on Champ Bailey‘s contract status via Twitter:

Our fingers are crossed, too. Stay tuned…

There’s been a lot of uncertainty about Champ Bailey‘s future in Denver. What’s certain is that things have been all over the spectrum. The Broncos have apparently offered Bailey a contract with little money guaranteed outside the first year, and reports have also came up the Champ’s house is for sale.

There is no doubt that Champ Bailey still have “it”, the question is how much longer will he retain “it”, and how much is that worth? Certainly other teams such as the Ravens, Falcons, and Texans would value his presence, if even for only two years or so. The real question is do the Broncos think the juice is worth the squeeze? What do you think Denver fans? Will Champ don the blue and orange ever again?

UPDATE: Brandon Lloyd has chimed in on the situation via Twitter. (Update thanks to Josh, who thanks Jon who always thanks Tim Tebow, who always thanks Jesus.)

@mrblloyd: “It’s looking good for champ. Fingers are crossed.”

Will Bailey stay a Bronco?

It seems that John Fox was finally allowed to speak and informed us that, “[The Broncos are] going to be a multiple-front defense, but I think we’ll make the commitment to the 4-3. The transition from the 3-4 to 4-3 is much easier than going from the 4-3 to 3-4, I will say that. So we feel pretty confident about that switch.”

Though there’s really no reason at all to attempt to predict a starting line-up at this point; I’ll do it anyway.

Elvis Dumervil was a defensive end in every professional season he’s ever played in (with the exception of his NFL sack leading season) and Robert Ayers is apparently best suited as a 4-3 defensive end. Justin Bannan and Jamal Williams will likely swell up the middle, D.J. Williams will move to weak side and Mario Haggan to strong side, with Joe Mayes in the middle.

Of course this prescription will be turned upside down as the Broncos under Fox draft two linebackers in the second round and pick up two in free agency, not to mention a defensive tackle.

So, yeah.

Has anyone mentioned recently that Fox knows how to turn around a football team (especially a defense)? It’s too bad the Broncos couldn’t keep Shanahan (or McDaniels) around through the end of his contract. Denver might actually have one heck of a coaching staff, not that they don’t currently.

So I made my plea and John Elway responded (kind of, but more to everyone; not just to me) and what’s been up Woody (thanks for mentioning the rally!)? Thanks for getting Shannon Sharpe in also (you old softy).

Now I am settling down with information received…

Jeff Legwold from THE Denver Post reports that the Denver Broncos offer to Champ Bailey consisted of less than $15 million guaranteed.

Now as Paul Harvey would say, “Here’s the rest of the story…

Methinks the Broncos may only be attempting to receive a bargain, if the Broncos were to use the franchise tag on Bailey it would guarantee somewhere in the ball park of $15-million. Champ has been on record stating that he would be okay with receiving the franchise tag. The Broncos reportedly offered four-years for $40-million with less than $10-million guaranteed in October.

There also is that little fact that the franchise tag could be absolutely worthless if a new Collective Bargaining Agreement is reached in the future. If that were to happen the Broncos could be left with little more than their jock straps in their hands.

So play it safe or go all out? Not since the days of Dan Reeves has Denver truly gone all out in an attempt to sign a free agent (and even then they couldn’t beat Al Davis and sign Tim Brown). Yet, you know who knows the value of a good free agent? Yep, it’s Elway.

I see the deal getting done, despite Bailey’s house being up for sale. Heck, if he gets all that money he’s going to need a new one anyway.

Some fans in Denver seem to remember and some seem to forget, but Perrish Cox may or may not be playing for Denver when the next season starts.

Cox today had a court date set for March 7th (one day after the potential lockout); this date will determine whether Cox is to stand trial for allegations stemming from an arrest after two felony sexual assault charges were filed this past December.

The young corner could face at worst life in prison or several years in prison (in the real life sector) and/or a four game suspension if he goes to trial or is found guilty of any charge ( in the football sector).

Though admittedly it’s incredibly insensitive to mention here, but this may have a bit to do with the snag in the talks with Champ Bailey. It could also very well determine who the Broncos will be choosing with their first round draft pick.

The good news for Cox? He’s being represented by Harvey Steinberg, yes, that’s the same prolific lawyer who represented Brandon Marshall and Travis Henry during their time in Denver.

It’s a common thing amongst fans of the Denver Broncos lately to debate the personnel moves made while former head coach Josh McDaniels had the reigns.

Time is still the only truth teller and eventually history will prove whether the trades of Jay Cutler, Brandon Marshall, Tony Scheffler and Alphonso Smith were best for the Broncos.

Our good friend Josina Anderson is reporting (via FootballProsLive) that in 2010 Denver also attempted to trade tackle Ryan Harris. According to Anderson the teams that were involved in trade talks were the Oakland Raiders, Buffalo Bills, Washington Redskins [edit note: of course], Houston Texans [another of course], and the Chicago Bears [how many bridges did the team burn?].

Harris was made aware of the Broncos attempts to trade him following Denver’s loss to the Baltimore Ravens. According to Anderson’s source the Bears were reportedly most interested [but probably were weary of sending more draft picks to Denver after the Cutler trade].

Harris stated:

“I like being a Denver Bronco, but the choice is not up to me whether I stay. I’ve proven myself every year that I have been in the NFL, and I don’t have a problem doing that here or anywhere else.”

Sounds like the man wants to stay and with a return to featuring the running game Harris is a perfect fit; he’s also an injury concern, the likeliest reason that McDaniels wanted to deal him in favor of starting rookie Zane Beadles in his place.

Now what do you say Nation? Are the Broncos better with or without Harris?
