As the offseason has gone on, it’s become more and more assumed by fans and the media that Tim Tebow would be taking the reigns as Denver Broncos starting QB in 2011. Even Pro Bowler Brandon Lloyd seemingly bought into that theory.

Hold your horses (ahem), says V.P. John Elway: “If we had to play today, Kyle Orton is the starting QB.”

Elway’s comments came from the Super Bowl this week, and Elway made it clear that the Broncos’ starting QB situation is anything but. The Broncos have time to analyze this and make a decision either way, and intend to just that.

Personally, I’m thrilled to hear it. The Broncos are not going to rush any decision, especially one of this magnitude.

“Kyle is definitely in the equation,” Elway said. “It’s not a foregone conclusion we’re going to trade Kyle at all. We still have to evaluate that part. I think a lot of people think it’s automatic. It’s not.”

I've always personally believed this was the case, and never understood why people felt that once Tebow had started for the previous regime, there was no way to start Orton.

The fact is, it's a new coaching staff. It has some familiar faces, but the leadership is different. The decisions the previous staff made are not necessarily the same decisions a new staff is going to make. Fox is not the guy who benched Orton, and besides, Orton was hurt. And once Orton was benched for being hurt, it is common in the NFL to go ahead with whoever seems best to play.

I see no reason why Orton can't at least compete and be in the mix.

That said he probably should be traded, I would be comfortable giving Orton one more season as starter and, more importantly, giving Tebow one more season on the bench to season.

I think it is just smoke and mirrors. If John makes him “seem” more valuable, they can ask more for him in a trade.

  • Vince_marine

I hate to see comments like this from the Broncos! Shouldn't they just say it's an open competition and the best QB will win the job. Things like this aren't good for a yound QB like Tebow to read.

Orton is a good QB, but he isn't a great one. He lacks the intangibles of Tebow. His leadership is questionable at best, and the formula for beating Orton is putting pressure in his face. The lack of his ability to scramble makes the Broncos vulnerable on offense. With Tebow he is able to make the play that isn't there. That is a necessity in the NFL today. Every play isn't going to be picture perfect like Orton needs it to be.

  • Kingpins10

I agree. They are playing politics to increase Orton's value.

Let's say for the sake of argument that they make the mistake of keeping Orton. Does any sane person actually believe that Orton can lead a team to a SB and actually win it? I don't. And neither did the Bears.

Draft day is approaching and the games to up the ante on available players on the trading block begins.

  • areferee

    Absolutely!

John Elway is showing he is no neophyte when it comes to running football operations.

He is proving the stability of the organization under his leadership and that they are all about making the right decisions, only when it is their better interest to make them.

I have never been more hopeful for this organization than I am right now. We may dissect his words to death, but he is proving that he is in the right position at the right time and we are INDEED heading in the right direction.

    Keep it up #7…

  • stuckinraiderland

Anybody willing to consider that Elway might just mean… exactly what he said, nothing more? I'm totally willing to take that statement at face value. It makes perfect sense to me. If they get a good trade offer, they'll trade; if not, Orton will still be around and would start.

Look at these terrible mock drafts haha:

    http://draftdebacled.com/publi
    He has Akamura over Peterson…

    http://www.thesportsbank.net/n…/
He says WR is a team need and other dumb thing…

  • Big_Pete

This is merely a way to keep Orton's trade value high. If it was a forgone conclusion that Tebow would start and Orton would be out of here, then nobody would give us any value, because what are we gonna do? Keep Orton on the bench instead of taking any 'ol player?

  • NMBronc

I am guessing bluff, to up the draft pick The rest of the league knows Orton sucks and is not willing to give up any higher than a 4th.

  • CJ

umm tell Arizona fans that Orton isnt better than Anderson or Hall or Skelton

  • NMBronc

AZ fans, Orton isn't better than Anderson, Hall, Skelton or any of your cheerleaders.

  • jdkchem

Anyone who quotes/paraphrases Kanye West is an idiot.

  • jdkchem

    Isn't Tebow an adult?

  • Danno

We can't get enough in return to make up for Orton as at least a top quality #2 QB…He goes nowhere.

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

What are you saying, Skelton's better than Orton because of one game? Cause you'd be just wrong.

  • CJ

Orton isnt elite but he is a solid pocket passer.

  • Vince_marine

I bet if the Broncos got offered a 2nd round pick, that would be enough. I'd trade Orton for the chance at Kerrigan, Moore or Nevis, and I bet the Broncos would too.

  • 5280

its funny cuz all of you guys have completely forgot(or just dont care) that there isn't a CBA in place which means by march, if there still isn't a CBA in place NOBODY can be traded any way and all the potential free agents or players that teams want to shop have to stay where they are. So Elway is just preparing for anything to happen. No Orton cannot take this team(or any team) to the super bowl, but at this point in his career, Tebow cant either. i've said it all along. we need to keep a veteran QB around to help with tebow and show him the ropes of how it is to be a starting QB in the NFL. this can only help the broncos. If they can put a decent running game together and protect Orton, he can at least keep us competitive and get us to the playoffs. Considering the team around him this year, everyone would have to agree that Orton did a great job with the offence. If you don't agree with that just look at his numbers. everytime he had the protection he needed he could pass the ball and make the right decisions better then anyone in the NFL. the fact is that the broncos won't get ANY offers for orton until theres a Union agreement. you guys gotta be more realistic. Obviously Tebow will start eventually, but as a fan, i would like the broncos to do everything they can to make sure he is ready for that and keeping Orton around as the starter for at least another year will help ensure that.

  • Kingpins10

Orton has avoided helping Tebow by many accounts. Since he doesn't want to be a team player, trade him.

  • mikebirty

Geez, the fire Elway's just lit under Tebow's ass is probably hot enough to melt all the snow on Lake Shore Drive

  • NMBronc

Obviously, I am being a little sarcastic, but what I would say is that I do not think much of Orton. He can technically throw a football, but once you add in variables the disussion changes.

Without a pass rush, he is a solid QB….with a pass rush, he generally screams, wets himself and falls down.

With good receivers, he looks better than he is. Without good receivers, he is proven to be inaccurate. Let's be honest, he made a star out of Lloyd, who was often catching passes that were not on the mark. Why do think Lloyd dropped so many in the pro bowl…those passes were on target.

With a big lead every QB looks golden, without a lead Orton is proven worthless…time and time again.

Without a lead, he racks up stats like Elway. With a lead or when the game is on the line….he is nothing more than aback up QB statistically.

Orton is a good back up. He is not aweful, but he is boring. He is not accurate, but he is lucky…..if his last pass at the Cin game had been on target, it would have been intercepted..we all know what happened.

Is he better than Anderson, No. Is he better than Hall or Skelton or any other back up in the league, maybe. Is he better than the cheerleaders, no…..but I would rather have the cheerleaders, because at a minimum they are prettier than his passes and more fun to watch.

  • Big_Pete

I chuckled…. you are pretty much spot on.
Lloyd doesn't make all those spectacular catches if they are accurate passes. There is nothing flashy about a pass hitting you in the chest. Orton can only do that if they receiver is 5 yards in front of him and there is zero pass rush.
If the play isn't 100% perfect, Orton can't execute it.
If we need a critical 1st down, and it's 3rd down, bet the farm that he'll take a sack and make us punt (even if there isn't much of a pass rush)
Orton can't do anything once real bullets start flying. He lacks any leadership and any intangibles. He reminds me of a poor man's Brian Griese, and you got to be pretty bad to be called a poor man's Griese. Griese was only as good as the team around him. Griese couldn't lead us from behind because he lacked intangibles to create plays out of nothing. At leas Griese could play through a real injury (shoulder separation) and could run better than Orton (would bootleg often for TDs).

Another thing we are forgetting, and a big reason why surely this is a bluff by Elway to keep Orton's value high…. Elway has regularly said a hundred times when it comes to rookie QB's and young QB's “throw them in the fire and let them play.” That's his stance. That's always been his stance, and that will always be his stance. You know how some guys are “let them learn from the bench” guys, and some are “baptism by fire” guys? Well, Elway is a baptism by fire type of guy. It is in his mental makeup to throw in the young QB to have him learn on the job, instead of learn from the bench. Why would Elway go against what he believes in? I'm sure there have been a few meetings with Tebow to explain to him that this is just media fluff to keep Orton's trade value high. Besides, even if they didn't tell Tebow that, this will only motivate him to work harder and improve that much more. Nobody will out work him, and Elway/Fox knows that, so that will be a huge reason why he'll start, even if there is an “open competition.”

  • robtink242

are u serious.. have u ever see him under pressure.. lets be honest we ran a pass heavy offense… thats why John Kitna has more passing yards than Eli Manning Big Ben and Aaron Rodgers.. But we know that numbers are deceitful in situations like this.

  • 5280

lolthe “the screams, wets himself, and falls down,” comment had be crying laughing! cuz he doesget all twitterpated over a pass rush. i still think he's better then all 3 of AZ's QB's and the cheerleaders though. as much as he isn't a viable QB to win a superbowl i still think he has enough to help tutor Tebow. especially with a back shoulder throw, cuz thats one throw that orton threw pretty well and that Tebow has no business throwing right now til he learns how to do it.

  • Clara Martin

Tim Tebow will do whatever is necessary to win. He can't stand to lose. I watched him for four years.

  • Mdizl

    MEDIA ALWAYS TWISTS WORDS!

  • Speedracer1963

seems to me Elway is saying orton never should have been benched when he said ….

Hold your horses (ahem), says V.P. John Elway: “If we had to play today, Kyle Orton is the starting QB.”

I guess thats why Fox is the new HC ?

  • Navy_boy777

Yeah your so right…tebow would fight babies to win, or spank old women for not being in love with jesus….TEBOW IS REGULAR NFL QB…and thats a good thing, but he'll have to prove himself in the next 10 years to see if he is an NFL LEGEND. just like anybody else in the league
