Denver Broncos blog, news and rumors

With all of the NFL’s Week Six Sunday games over and the trade deadline looming, the Denver Broncos‘ front office should be expecting some phone calls.

Bronco receivers Brandon Lloyd and Eddie Royal are both in the final year of their respective contracts and have both requested to be traded.  If a team calls — and they will — the Broncos may make a deal before Monday’s 11:10 a.m. practice session.

The question is, which receiver will be dealt, and what is the asking price?  It seems unlikely that the Broncos would be willing to trade both receivers, but it’s not out of the realm of possibility.

At the moment, it appears Lloyd is the more likely of the two to be traded, with Denver asking for a 3rd to 5th round selection.  Reportedly, the New England Patriots were interested in Lloyd but have backed off, while the St. Louis Rams are the front runners to close a deal.

Eddie Royal

ESPN’s Adam Schefter just reported on ESPN that Denver Broncos wide receiver Brandon Lloyd isn’t the only Tim Tebow target on the Broncos’ trading block. Eddie Royal is on there, too.

Per Schefter, both players requested to be traded. Both Lloyd and Royal are in the final year of their respective contracts, so, if they feel they’re not part of the Broncos’ future, asking for a trade makes sense.

According to Schefter, Royal is garnering as much, if not more interest than Lloyd.

There’s no indication that Kyle Orton‘s benching played any factor, though the timing of this news suggests that’s a possibility.

The trade deadline is Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. MT.

If you could only keep one wide receiver, who would it be Broncos fans? Royal or Lloyd?

Apparently the entire Internet took a day off “being the Internet” to talk about Tim Tebow yesterday. And we mean the entire Internet: from Don Banks to Matthew Berry to Hulk Hogan to Die Hard movie producers. Welcome to the World Wide TeboW.

The NFL’s trade deadline is next Tuesday.  Let the rumors begin!

Earlier today, Kyle noted in the daily links that the Broncos may try to deal linebacker D.J. Williams and wide receiver Brandon Lloyd on the trading block.  Late this afternoon, Mike Klis of the Denver Post reported that Lloyd is in fact on the trading block.

Per Klis, there are three or four teams that are currently interested in Lloyd, the Tennessee Titans and Carolina Panthers among them (I can just imagine Cam Newton having Steve Smith and Lloyd as his two main receivers!).  Getting value for Lloyd now would be a good move for the Broncos, as he will be a free agent after this season.

The Broncos are reportedly looking for a 3rd-4th round draft selection in exchange for Lloyd, which could help them in rebuilding their defensive unit.  Lloyd will probably be asking for more money than the Broncos are willing to give him next offseason, so it’s not surprising that the team is shopping him.

As Klis pointed out, the Broncos will also have receivers Demaryius Thomas and Eddie Royal back from injury following the bye, solidifying Denver’s receiving corps with Eric Decker‘s emergence.  With quarterback Tim Tebow under center, the Broncos will also have a run oriented offense, one which will have no need for a high-paid receiver that gets disgruntled when not receiving the ball.

Personally, I think the Broncos should make this happen.  Lloyd is 30 years old and has only one notable season in nine years — his value will never be as high as it is now.  Rather than letting him walk next offseason, why not get another draft selection for him now?

Just over a month ago, we were intrigued and somewhat amused to find that both Tim Tebow and Brady Quinn were listed as the team’s Co-No. 2 quarterbacks.  Now that the Broncos have committed to Tebow, I was wondering where Kyle Orton now stands on the depth chart.

You guessed it:

A screenshot of the Denver Broncos official depth chart, seen on DenverBroncos.com.

Coach John Fox noted that it would be a competitive disadvantage to name a second string quarterback when Orton was starting, apparently his stance hasn’t changed.

Is this perhaps going a bit overboard though?  One would assume the Broncos will give Quinn his shot of Tebow totally flops, so why beat around the bush?  Either part ways with Orton or make him the second string quarterback — there’s no point in creating more drama now.

I actually feel bad for Brady Quinn, he went through a lot in Cleveland and it’s been more of the same in Denver.  Does anyone else feel that Quinn is more likely to be the Broncos future than Orton is (or ever was)?  It’s time to move on from Orton.

Denver's Von Miller has phenomenal potential.  (Image courtesy of Paul Cloud Photography)

Broncos rookie linebacker Von Miller has recorded five sacks in five games this season, notching a sack in four consecutive games.  Just how impressive is that?  Consider the numbers below:

  • DeMarcus Ware (Dallas), Mario Williams (Houston), Dwight Freeney (Indianapolis), Terrell Suggs (Baltimore) and Brian Orakpo (Washington).  Those are just a few of the top pass rushers in the league that Miller has either matched in beaten in total sacks so far this season.
  • The only three players that have recorded more sacks than Miller through five games (Jared Allen, Jason Babin and Jason Pierre-Paul) are defensive ends who rush the passer on nearly every play.  Miller has other responsibilities as a linebacker and often only rushes on third downs.
  • The Broncos’ longest streak of consecutive games with a sack by a rookie is six games, with was set by linebacker Mike Croel in 1991.  Interestingly, Croel was a fourth overall selection by the Broncos in 1991 and won the Defensive Rookie of the Year honor that season.
  • Miller has the chance to not only match Croel’s record, but the Broncos all-time record of consecutive games with a sack, which was set by the franchises all-time sack leader Simon Fletcher (10 straight games).
  • At the pace he is on, Miller is on track to record 58 tackles and16.0 sacks this season, which would be one short of the team’s all-time record for sacks in a single season (Elvis Dumervil, 2009).

It’s safe to say that Miller is definitely in good company.  We’re looking forward to watching the rest of his historic rookie season.

Denver Broncos wide receivers Eddie Royal (19) and Matthew Willis (12) participate in the team's training camp in 2010. (BroncoTalk.net)

And on the last day of practice, The Appointed One said, “Let there be targets.”

Tim Tebow‘s second day as Denver Broncos starting quarterback was a noteworthy event due to the return of a long-injured receiver, Eddie Royal, who participated in practice for the first time since Week Two. Wednesday was the last practice of the week, as all teams are required to give players Thursday through Sunday off during the bye under the new CBA agreement.

Royal is not the only weapon the Broncos plan on having back for Tebow’s Week Seven debut: wide receiver Demaryius Thomas and tight end Julius Thomas are also expected to return to practice following the bye.

“When we get those guys back, hopefully we can really let loose and show what kind of talent we do have at the receiver position,” Brandon Lloyd said last week. “I think it’s the best in the league.”

The Broncos certainly could have used more of that talent against the San Diego Chargers, whose secondary swarmed Lloyd, Eric Decker, and Matthew Willis, holding Broncos receivers to a mere 16 total yards combined.

“We just didn’t have a lot of looks, to be honest with you,” Kyle Orton said after the game.

With Royal and the two Thomases as options, the Broncos hope to change that aspect of their offense for Tim Tebow’s debut as starter.

Marshall has not found a lot of success in Miami. (Photo by J. Meric/Getty Images)

When the Denver Broncos play the Miami Dolphins next week, several players will reunite for the first time in years.

Not only will quarterback Tim Tebow, defensive end Derrick Harvey and defensive tackle Marcus Thomas be reunited with Miami’s Mike Pouncey at halftime as a part of “Gator Day”, but all remaining Broncos from the 2009 team will be reunited with wide receiver Brandon Marshall, who is now a Dolphin.

A total of twenty Broncos players who played with Marshall remain on the team, including receivers Brandon Lloyd, Eddie Royal and Matthew Willis.  Since his departure, Marshall hasn’t been as productive as he was in Denver.

Last season, Marshall caught 86 passes for 1,014 yards and three touchdowns.  Compare those stats to his 101 catches for 1,120 yards and 10 touchdowns in his final season with the Broncos.  Filling the void at receiver, Lloyd stepped up last season for the Broncos by catching 77 passes for 1,448 yards and 11 touchdowns — numbers better than Marshall ever had in Denver, on fewer targets.

This season, Marshall has caught 22 passes for 313 yards and one touchdown.  Denver’s Eric Decker has also caught 22 passes, his going for 266 yards and four touchdowns.  It’s safe to say, the Broncos receiving corps has done just fine, Marshall omitted. Click here to read the rest of this entry »
