Denver Broncos blog, news and rumors

Recent rumors have surfaced that the Denver Broncos may heavily be considering drafting a running back with their first selection in the 2012 NFL Draft.

According to Cecil Lammey (NFL Insider for 102.3 Denver and senior writer for Footballguys.com) — the Broncos front office is impressed with early entrant running back Lamar Miller of the Miami Hurricanes.  Lammey cites that the Broncos favor Miller’s big play ability over Boise State RB Doug Martin and feel that he has better rushing instincts than David Wilson of Virginia Tech.  Other prospects that fans may have considered of interest to the Broncos, Washington RB Chris Polk and Oregon RB LaMichael James are said to not be viable options for the Broncos moving forward.

In a series of tweet responses to questions and inquiries from fans, Lammey furthers his tidbits by stating that the Broncos brass are comfortable with the value at defensive tackle in the second round and may very well wait to address their biggest need then.  Whether or not you agree with waiting to address defensive tackle until later, the idea of bringing in a player like Lamar Miller to pair with Peyton Manning and Co. could reap serious benefits for the Broncos down the road.

If you were hoping to follow the Denver Broncos‘ 2012 training camp practices on the HBO show Hard Knocks this summer, we’ve got disappointing news.  HBO approached the Broncos about being on the show and the team turned them down.

The New York JetsRex Ryan surprisingly doesn’t want the Jets to be on the show again, while the team’s Owner, Woody Johnson does, according to FoxSports.com.  Before asking the Jets to be on the show, HBO had wanted the Broncos.

Before reaching out to the Jets, HBO wanted Peyton Manning and the Broncos to be on ‘Hard Knocks,’ but were flat out denied.

Would you have liked to see the team on Hard Knocks this summer?  Or are you pleased that the team turned down HBO?  Dish out your thoughts in the comments below.

Bannan was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the fifth round of the 2002 NFL Draft. (Photo by Robert Laberge/Getty Images)

The Denver Broncos on Wednesday agreed to terms with veteran defensive tackle Justin Bannan, according to Mike Klis of the Denver Post.  The signing adds depth to Denver’s defensive tackle position.

Terms of the one-year deal are not yet known.  Mile High Sports’ Brandon Spano speculates that Bannan signed a veteran player minimum contract and that the signing will not change Denver’s draft plans.

Bannan (6-3, 312 pounds), known as a great locker room player, is returning to Denver after spending the 2010 season with the Broncos and last season in St. Louis.  At age 32, Bannan’s productivity in the league has come later in his career as he has started 20 games over the past two seasons after starting in only 27 games during his first eight seasons in the NFL.

Last season, Bannan recorded 31 tackles and forced a fumble.  In 2010 — with the Broncos — Bannan recorded 35 tackles, a sack and a forced fumble as a member of Denver’s defensive line.  Click here to read the rest of this entry »

Quarterback Peyton Manning (36, 14 seasons) may not be the most experienced player on the Broncos’ roster this season, as strange as that sounds.  If safety Brian Dawkins (38, 16 seasons) returns for the 2012 season, the nine-time Pro Bowler would become the oldest and most experienced player in Denver.

While he hasn’t made his decision yet, Dawkins would like to return for a seventeenth season.

“My decision will be based upon me making the right decision for me going forward — period,” Dawkins said on Sirius XM NFL Radio last month. “That’s a decision I’ll make at some point.”

FoxSports.com reports that the Broncos have kept in contact with Dawkins about returning this season and would be open to him coming back.  The team and the fans, are now awaiting his decision.  Click here to read the rest of this entry »

On Tuesday afternoon, Denver Broncos linebacker D.J. Williams took to Twitter to dish out some smack — on a division rival.  Williams started by asking Chargers wide receiver Eddie Royal “you went to San Diego?”

Did Williams really just find out or realize that Royal had signed with San Diego? Regardless, it appears that Williams knew Royal was headed out of town because Royal wrote back, “Yup, you got your wish.”

That wish, presumably, was for Royal to stay in the AFC West so Williams could play against him.  Williams noted,  “I get two chances a year… I’m going to smash ya soft ass!”

Royal responded, “Haha, I heard this everyday in practice from D.J. for four years.”  To which Williams concluded:  “Couldn’t do it then (in practice), now it’s on!”

Royal signed a three-year, $13.5 deal with the Chargers last month as a free agent.  Williams is entering his ninth season as a starting linebacker in Denver and could miss six games this season if his performance enhancing drug suspension is upheld.

How about it, Bronco fans?  Would D.J. Williams smashing Eddie Royal be on your list of things you want to see this season?

You see it almost every draft. It is a passing league they say. Perhaps that’s why every year some young gunslinger goes at least two rounds too high.

Here’s a list of quarterbacks who went higher than their value since 2003.

  • Byron Leftwich – 2003 (7th)
  • Rex Grossman – 2003 (22th)
  • J.P. Losman – 2004 (25th)
  • Jason Campbell – 2005 (25th)
  • Mark Sanchez – 2009 (5th)
  • Josh Freeman – 2009 (17th)
  • Pat White – 2009 (44th)
  • Tim Tebow – 2010 (25th)
  • Blaine Gabbert – 2011 (10th)
  • Christian Ponder – 2011 (12th)

In some of these selections, the reach was worth it. Josh Freeman is looking like he could have some serious potential, Christian Ponder showed some brilliance last season, and some do argue that Tim Tebow is successful since he has a career winning record and won a playoff game, with his arm no-less. However, you can see most of these choices were serious head scratchers.

The latest multi-million dollar victim of the hype machine is Brock Osweiler. Four days ago, John Fox,  Mike McCoy, Adam Gase, Brian Xanders, and John Elway himself made a trip down to Tempe, Arizona to hold a private workout with Osweiler. That’s a lot of brass for one kid who is supposed to be a fourth round pick. Click here to read the rest of this entry »
