Last April, the Denver Broncos visited with (or worked out) 32 draft prospects. This year, the team is expected to visit with a similar number of players.

Below is a look at how the first round of the 2011 NFL Draft went down and which players Denver brought in for visits.

1st Overall:  QB Cam Newton, Carolina Panthers.

Worked out/visited Denver:  Yes.

Notes:  Newton worked out for the Broncos last April and was the first player off the board. Other quarterbacks that visited the team were Blaine Gabbert, Christian Ponder, Colin Kaepernick and Jake Locker.

2nd Overall:  LB Von Miller, Denver Broncos.

Worked out/visited Denver:  Yes.

Notes:  Miller visited with the team and was definitely the best player available when they were on the clock in the first round. Other linebackers that visited with the Broncos were Casey Matthews, Dontay Moch, Akeem Ayers, Lawrence Wilson, Mason Foster and Ryan Coulson.  Click here to read the rest of this entry »

Starting next week, the Denver Broncos will visit with draft prospects in preparation for the upcoming NFL Draft.  On Monday, Utah State running back Robert Turbin will visit the team and Michigan State defensive tackle Jerel Worthy has also had a request to visit with the team.

“Since the combine, I have visited Carolina,” Jerel told NFL Network‘s Charley Casserly on Tuesday.   “(Scheduled visits are) St. Louis, Philly called me today as well as Denver — I talked to the Texans a couple of weeks ago.”

According to Worthy, he has already visited the Panthers and the Rams, Eagles, Broncos and Texans would like to schedule visits.  A twenty-one year old Junior, Worthy (6-2, 308 lbs.), is entering the draft after recording 77 tackles and 8.5 sacks through his first two collegiate seasons.

A projected first-round draft pick, Worthy was a two-time All American at Michigan State and is ranked as the third-best defensive tackle in the draft by TheDCTimes.  The Broncos are expected to select at least one defensive tackle in the draft later this month.

Brock Osweiler, QB, ASU

Height: 6’7

Weight: 242

Forty: 4.94 (pro-day)

Starts: 15

Record: 8-7

TD-INT: 33-15

Brock Osweiler is hot on Denver’s radar. Five days ago, John Fox,  Mike McCoy, Adam Gase, Brian Xanders, and John Elway made the trip down to Tempe, Arizona to hold a private workout with Osweiler. If the Broncos liked what they saw, then you better believe that he’ll be sitting high on the draft board.

Background

Brock Osweiler is a six foot, seven inch tall, quarterback from Arizona State University. Originally, Osweiler was committed to Gonzaga to play basketball.

However, in the wake of his surging football skills he chose to play for Arizona State over Stanford and Washington State. Click here to read the rest of this entry »

Thomas seen during a January practice. (AP Photo/Ed Andrieski)

There is a reason why third-year wide receiver Demaryius Thomas hasn’t been running routes with fellow receiver Eric Decker for quarterback Peyton Manning in Denver — he recently had surgery on his pinky finger (which he fractured last September) to remove a pin, according to CBS4‘s Vic Lombardi and Thomas, himself.

It is not yet known what Thomas’ timetable is to return and it is not known if he will be at the team’s voluntary offseason workouts which begin on Monday.  It’s discouraging that Thomas is missing possible reps with Manning, especially because Thomas has a history of being nicked up.

When healthy, Thomas has caught touchdown passes over New York’s Darrell Revis and at times, has looked like a Pro Bowler.  Unfortunately, Thomas has had trouble staying healthy for long periods of time.  Click here to read the rest of this entry »

The Denver Broncos will visit with at least one draft prospect at the team’s Dove Valley facility on Monday, the same day the team will begin organized offseason workouts.  Utah State running back Robert Turbin will visit the team, according to a Denver Post report.

Turbin (Jr., 5-10, 222 lbs.), is a twenty-two year old bruiser who rushed for 1,517 yards and 19 touchdowns last season with 45 career scores.  Denver has been interested in Turbin since before the combine and spoke to the top-ten running back prospect in February.

At the NFL’s Scouting Combine, Turbin ran a 4.50 forty-yard-dash, completed 28 bench press repetitions (225 pounds) and ran a 4.31 twenty-yard-shuttle.  With speed, athleticism, size and receiving ability, Turbin has the potential to be a draft day steal if he falls to the mid-rounds of the draft.

Turbin is one of BT‘s favorite running backs in the draft and seems to be the type of back that Head Coach John Fox favors.  While in Carolina, Fox drafted DeAngelo Williams 27th overall in 2006 as a 5-9, 217 pound shifty back with power and in 2008 drafted a 5-10, 235 pound Jonathan Stewart 13th overall.

While Turbin isn’t expected to go in the first round, he is similar to Williams and Stewart in his size and style of play.  The Broncos are expected to add a running back to their rotation through the draft, might Turbin be that back?

Would you like to see Denver draft Turbin later this month?  Dish out your thoughts in the comments.

Since signing with Denver several weeks ago, quarterback Peyton Manning has been getting work in at the team’s Dove Valley facility and has been working out with his new teammates off-site of the team’s headquarters.  Most notably, Manning has been throwing to third-year receiver Eric Decker, who says Manning’s arm “looks great”.

Getting work in early with Manning will be beneficial for Decker when the season rolls around, as Peyton noted to BroncoTV‘s Chris Hall on Wednesday.

“These workouts are so rewarding,” said Manning.  “You know they’ll pay dividends for you in the fall — on third and five you’ll complete a pass pattern to Eric Decker and you’ll say ‘we worked on that back in April.'”

That’s great news for Decker, but as many fans have been asking, where is Demaryius Thomas?  Thomas’ Twitter handle, @DemaryiusT, indicates that Thomas is in Georgia, at least as of Sunday.  When will he be coming back to Denver?  Presumably, on Friday — when the team begins voluntary offseason workouts.

Per Hall and CBSSports.com‘s Andrew Mason, the vast majority of the team is expected to show up on Friday to begin preparing for organized workouts with the new strength and conditioning coaches on Monday.  Team OTA’s (practices) will start in May.

Check back on Monday as we’ll be watching the roll call at Dove Valley anticipating Thomas’ name being mentioned.  Is it September yet?
