Steven Harris

Steven Harris
Name: Steven Harris
Height, Weight: 6’5″, 305
Position: Defensive Tackle
Age, Experience: 23, 2
College: Florida

Steven Harris is a 2nd year player who joined the Denver Broncos as an undrafted college free agent in 2007. Part of a migration of Florida Gators that year that included first round selection Jarvis Moss and fourth round pick Marcus Thomas, Harris sat on the practice squad for much of the year before being activated in Week 14 against the Chiefs.

The Good: Started his pro career strong with a fumble recovery against Kansas City. The play ended the contest between the Chiefs and the Broncos. He tallied 3 tackles against Houston the next week, then assisted in one tackle in the last two weeks each to finish the year. Harris has some versatility to him, starting all 12 games for the Gators as a defensive end in 2005. After moving to defensive tackle in 2006, Harris was awarded the James Kynes Award as the Gators’ most oustanding lineman.

The Bad: His impact is minimal thus far, but it’s hard enough for a rookie defensive tackle to make an impact on the playing field, let alone an undrafted one. Harris will be competing with Mallard, Carlton Powell, and Kenny Peterson for the 4th and 5th DT spots behind Thomas, Dewayne Robertson, and Alvin McKinley. If he doesn’t break the roster, the Broncos can still keep him on the practice squad since Harris was only activated for four games last year.

Status: Backup.  Potential camp fodder.  Signed undisclosed contract in May 2007.  Harris has his work cut out for him in training camp. Let’s see if he steps up. Steven Harris was born on August 14, 1984, in Homestead, FL.

As always, we invite you, the readers, to partake. Are there enough Gators on the Broncos defensive line, or do you think Harris will step up?

From the same guy who brought you this sweet Brandon Marshall video, here are some highlights of Denver Broncos Quarterback Jay Cutler making plays all over the field. Some fun watching for a Friday. Enjoy.

Ryan Harris

Ryan Harris
Name: Ryan Emerson Wilcox Harris
Height, Weight: 6’5″, 300
Position: Offensive Tackle
Age, Experience: 2, 23
College: Notre Dame

Ryan Harris was drafted by the Denver Broncos in the 3rd round of the 2007 NFL Draft. In his rookie season last year, Harris underwent back surgery during training camp and was inactive for the first five weeks of the season. Harris contributed to special teams, starting in Week 7 against Pittsburgh on Sunday Night Football. He appeared very briefly a few times at both left and right tackle last year.

The Good: Harris has a lot of upside, and is healthy coming off his back surgery. Physically, he has a lot of tools you look for in a tackle and can really aid the offense. Personally, I love the kid. I’m really hoping he wins the starting right tackle spot. Coming out of college at Notre Dame, Harris won the award for Best Offensive Lineman for the Irish twice in his career. He is only the third true freshman to start a game on the offensive line in Notre Dame history, starting 8 games in 2003. The feat earned him All-Pro freshman first and second team honors from various sports outlets. Throughout his career, Harris helped the Irish tally impressive offensive statistics, including averaging over 30 points per game in his senior year.

The Bad: Harris has injury concerns coming into the season, and while the Broncos are said to be high on him, he’ll have to show that he’s healthy enough to win the starting right tackle job. As of May 27, Head Coach Mike Shanahan named Chris Kuper the starting right tackle during practice. While this is by no means final (this is the exact same case involving Kuper and RG Montrae Holland last year, and Holland won the starting job by the start of the season), it shows that Harris has some work to do to show he’s worthy of starting consideration.

Status: Competing for starting spot. Signed through 2010. Harris has his work cut out for him in training camp. Let’s see if he steps up. Ryan Harris was born on March 11, 1985, in Minneapolis, MN.

As always, we invite you, the readers, to partake. Are you a fan of Harris and his physical toolset, or do you want someone more experienced?

In the video above, the NFL Live crew attempts to break down the AFC West.  When they get to the Denver Broncos analysis they just butcher it completely. We’re not a complete team by any means, but they nitpick for all the wrong reasons.

  • Lack of playmakers – Hi. I’d like to introduce you to Brandon Marshall and Tony Scheffler. They both finished in the top 10 of their positions. Our quarterback has been known to make plays with his big arm AND quick feet as well.  Oh, and I pray the 31 other NFL teams underestimate Champ Bailey the way you just did.
  • Linebacker corps – “The linebacker position is not content.  They have to find a way to put D.J. (Williams) on the field where he can make plays.”  Okay.  Done.
  • Brandon Stokley is not our #1 wide receiver.  He’s our #3.  But good analysis otherwise.

Michael Smith is the only one that even makes a good point, more of an after thought, by mentioning the defense finding a new identity under Bob Slowik.

Someone give me a job.  I’m tired of this complete garbage being spewed around as fact.  And people getting paid to spew it.  If you’re going to talk about the Broncos, mention the injuries to the offensive line last year, and a lot of new players in new spots this year.  Mention the defensive line in any fashion, for crying out loud.  Those are our biggest issues.

  • Minor hiccup in the signing of Josh Barrett – the NFL disapproved the contract, so whatever wording the NFL doesn’t like will have to get amended.  Just a formality – no big deal folks. [Hashmarks]
  • Brandon Marshall‘s DUI trial was postponed.  Again.  [CBS 4]

Ben Hamilton

Ben Hamilton
Name: Benjamin Thomas Hamilton
Height, Weight: 6’4″, 290
Position: Guard/Center
Age, Experience: 8, 30
College: Minnesota

Ben Hamilton was drafted by the Denver Broncos in the 4th round of the 2001 draft. A durable player, Hamilton missed his first snap since 2002 when he was placed on the Injured Reserve list in 2007. Since being designated the starter in ’02, Hamilton had an impressive streak of 5,407 consecutive snaps in the regular and post season until his concussion in training camp sidelined him last year. He now returns with the hope to start a new streak for years to come.

The Good: Hamilton is wildly underrated, and in my opinion, was the best offensive lineman the Broncos had in 2005 and 2006. His absence was noticeable last year, as neither Chris Myers nor Chris Kuper were able to fill his massive shoes. He says he is 100% healthy and has taken part in every offseason team activity to date. Hamilton helped a Broncos offensive line that placed second in the NFL in rushing yards (11,919) and ranked fourth in the league in fewest sacks allowed (140) from 2002-2007.

The Bad: Hamilton’s injury is one of the scariest kind – a concussion. For months, Hamilton was expecting to return within two weeks from any given time. The date kept moving back and back until the Broncos were already in the middle of their season, and they finally decided to put him on IR. At the age of 30, Hamilton’s future health and ability to maintain his previous level of success on the line have to be in question.

Status: Incumbent starter. Signed through 2009. Hamilton has the starting job locked up if he can just stay healthy.

As always, we invite you, the readers, to partake. Does Hamilton’s injury give you too much cause for concern, or can he stay as long as he likes?

The Denver Broncos have a punting battle to square away during training camp, and one of the players involved is Brett Kern. Kern was a finalist for the Ray Guy award, and this video is from his days at Toledo. It shows him at practice training with a coach, and they go over numbers including hang time, yards, and the time between the snap and the kick. It put my mind a bit at ease with so many questions around special teams. Enjoy.
