Denver Broncos training camp… news and notes from the Monday morning practice.
Attendance Report
Jarvis Moss was the most noticeable absence after teammate Marcus Thomas told reporters to expect him back today. Brandon Marshall, Brian Dawkins, Brandon Stokley, Correll Buckhalter, and Wesley Woodyards were also missing. It appears these veterans got the morning off, although Head Coach Josh McDaniels wouldn’t clarify the reasons for any particular player after practice beyond a “coach’s decision.” Linebacker Nick Greisen left the field with what looked like a knee injury.
Note: I’m giving offensive and defensive MVP awards each practice from now on.
Offense
MVP: Eddie Royal. He is just unstoppable. At one point during eleven-on-eleven drills it felt like he was our entire offense, catching several consecutive passes (he did drop one in the red zone, however). He even got the better of Champ Bailey in one-on-one’s (although not by much). Coach McD gave the second-year player high praise, particularly mentioning his smarts. Royal also looks good in punt returns; a bit more natural than fellow returner Alphonso Smith. Great to see 19 continuing to flourish in his second year.

Highlights:
- Peyton Hillis doesn’t know if he’s a fullback or tailback, and neither does the coach.
- The guys that were held out were a coaching decision which could repeat moving forward. Some of these guys might participate this afternoon.

Jarvis Moss, who was expected to return today, is not on the field. Neither is Brandon Marshall, who reportedly limped off yesterday.
Also missing are Brian Dawkins, Brandon Stokley, Correll Buckhalter, and Wesley Woodyard.
Heading back out to practice now.
A few days into training camp and still there has been no breakthroughs with the contracts for first rounders Knowshon Moreno and Robert Ayers. As a Bronco fan you may wonder exactly why. Well, Michael Crabtree sure isn’t doing anything to help speed up this process.

The 10th overall pick of the 2009 NFL Draft, Michael Crabtree.
Mr. Crabtree and his agent Eugene Parker believe that it was a mistake for the former Texas Tech receiver to fall to the tenth overall pick. They also want to prove it financially by landing a contract that consists of a figure that a top five pick would earn. The Niners aren’t exactly in concordance with this belief. Since usually the way rookies get signed is based off of the amount the player picked near them cashed in this could complicate things. Crabtree and Parker are seriously messing things up for the players picked in that region such as Moreno.
The best way to explain this situation is to quote what a famous Colorado citizen named Randy Marsh once told his son Stan, “Well son, it’s simple economics…I don’t understand it at all.”
Thankfully Matt Maiocco of the Press Democrat was able to shed some light on the situation. Click here to read the rest of this entry »

Denver Broncos training camp… News and notes from the Sunday afternoon session.
The coaches’ kids joined in the fun, veteran starters enjoyed a light practice, and backups and rookies slapped on the pads as the Broncos embarked on their fifth session of training camp in 2009. Wide receiver Brandon Marshall, who was seen limping off the field in the morning workout, did not participate.
The session began with non-contact special teams work. Nothing much to see here, although it looked like they were working on a sneak play employing Vernon Fox. Later, the defense went through a mental workout as Mike Nolan tested and corrected his crew.
The session ended with an eleven-on-eleven scrimmage with the backups on both sides of the ball. Some vets, like the starting o-line, were allowed to hit the locker room early. Tony Carter nearly picked off Tom Brandstater, and Kenny McKinley had a bobbling, juggling, third-effort catch to finish the practice to the cheers of the crowd.
Not a lot to report from this afternoon; a much-deserved break for our hardworking Broncos. Something tells me tomorrow they’ll be going full speed again.
Outside the Lines did a nice report on Josh McDaniels that aired this morning. The most interesting part of this video occurs near the end, when Pat Bowlen confirms what I had suspected: the decision to trade Jay Cutler was made by the owner, and him alone.

Denver Broncos training camp… news and notes from Sunday’s morning practice.
Welcome, Broncos fans, to the third day of live coverage of Broncos training camp! Today will be remembered by me personally as the day I became officially worried about the quarterback situation… but more on that later. The third day of camp saw Brandon Marshall leave the field early – I didn’t see him walk off but I’m told he was limping. Something to keep our eyes on… meanwhile, the practice was again in full pads, although guys were only going through what I’ll call “three quarters contact.” I guess that’s McDaniels‘ way of giving the guys a “break” after the full pounding they took yesterday.
Attendance Report
Vernon Fox returned to the field, wearing an inside-out orange “don’t hit me” jersey that are usually exclusive to the quarterbacks. Jarvis Moss was again absent, along with the two rookies. Nic Clemons, who was carted off the field yesterday, was also absent, and the coach told reports he will likely be out at least a few days, but didn’t want to speculate beyond that.
Offense
So… quarterbacks. It’s still early, so they’re still shaking off the rust, but there isn’t a single guy I feel really comfortable with right now. Tom Brandstater is very raw and needs some development, particularly in his footwork and release. Let’s take him out of the picture right now and talk about Chris Simms and Kyle Orton.
