Outside the Lines did a nice report on Josh McDaniels that aired this morning. The most interesting part of this video occurs near the end, when Pat Bowlen confirms what I had suspected: the decision to trade Jay Cutler was made by the owner, and him alone.

watched that when it first came on this morning.. Can’t help but get the sense from McD that he is in way over his head..

Can he at least start a sentence without “Umm…”

A lot of coaches say umm constantly.

Shanahan always fumbled through his conferences.

I think McDaniels does do “um” a lot. But Shanny’s equivalent was “Well, when you…” “Well, when you have a guy like Champ Bailey…” “Well, when you’re down 7 points…” etc. etc.

Sox you sound like a hater on this one… He seems very poised, a person who has seen what it mean to lead a team first-hand, and a superior student of the game. He’s a football coach not am orator. Give me a break, you’re hyper critical!

At least he knows that he f’ed himself with the Cutler trade. But at the same time You watch Jay completely doge the question. I like how he is moving on. We all need to move on. And I hope the saying “it has to get worse to get better” holds true to it’s name.

    Jay always dodges that question.

In the words of Rich Eisen, “Give me a call anytime Jay, I’ll pick up.”

  • Ryan

We’ll see if Jay has anything to say come 8/30…

    BW…

I am not hating on this one.. I am being honest… he knows he screwed himself early and is having to dig out of hole to start with…

and hyper critical ??!!! please…. if he didn’t want criticism he should have stayed a ball boy !

Sox– I mean hyper critical as in too critical… Hey, I agree McD needs to take everything thrown at him, he’s a millionaire NFL coach comes with the job. Personally, I think Cutler has a drinking problem, and that’s why he’s no longer here.

  • soxbigdog

I think Cutler isnt here anymore because he was never McD’s ‘guy’… I think he had a dream of going to a team and bringing Cassel with him.. and it blew up in his face… Cutler’s off field problems only cleared any road blocks that could have stood in the way of him getting out of town… like Bowlen stepping in and saying no…

and I don’t think what I said was “over” critical… saying he had no business coaching an NFL team would have been .. but I dont think that.. I am sure he can do a lot better job then alot of guys who have held that title with teams over the years…

I know he has the football pedigree and is a ‘system’ guy.. but I dont look at him like I would Mike Tomlin, who was also young and came in to coach an NFL team… Tomlin, even from the beginning, came off alot more sure of himself and of what he wants and expects from his players…

McDaniel has a long way to go before I look at him in the same light

Boy I don’t see that way… I think McD is very composed… He totally underestimated how petulant Cutler was, and handled very poorly–I agree. But Cutler was a crybaby as soon as Shanny was fired and was looking for an exit. As for Tomlin, I think he’s OK, but he walked into an ideal situation (aka Switzer w/ Dallas)… And it was Cower’s team lock-stock-and-barrel, I think the jury is still out on him.

But it’s all theory until they start playing games. Only one thing I absolutely certain about–Hillis is a beast!

I am not saying the Steelers won a Super Bowl because of Tomlin… but they very easily could have hired the ‘wrong guy’ and that team could have grinded to a halt… like I said, even when Tomlin was hired he carried himself well and was in control from day one… McD.. not so much as we have seen
