Denver Broncos blog, news and rumors

In a post-practice interview, Marcus Thomas was asked about his friend and teammate Jarvis Moss. After reportedly considering retirement, Thomas told us Moss expects to return to training camp as early as Monday after missing two days of workouts. Check the audio below.

Sounds like Moss took some of the criticisms personally; Thomas mentioned Moss being labeled a “bust” and everything. Actions speak louder than words… let’s see if Moss returns tomorrow. I, for one, saw good things from Moss and hope he returns. I’d be hugely disappointed if he never took it upon himself to at least TRY and prove the naysayers wrong.

On evaluating the second day of practice

“(There was) improvement in some areas, and (we) certainly made our share of mistakes this afternoon. (There is) a lot to coach off of and try to fix and get better going forward.”

On RB Peyton Hillis’ involvement in the offense

“He will play as much as he deserves to play. He can play as a fullback in a two-back offense. Obviously, he can catch the ball very well out of the backfield. He is getting plenty of opportunity right now to run in our one-back sets, which he will continue to get that opportunity. He has done some really positive things, but like everybody, there are definitely some things that he needs to fix and improve upon. Peyton is a very valuable player, I think. (He is) versatile and creates some matchup problems for defenses if we can use him right.”

On why he missed practice Friday

“Coach (Josh McDaniels) and (Strength and Conditioning Coach) Rich (Tuten) and everybody felt like we weren’t ready to get out there. So, you know, obviously we just used precaution and got ready—used the day to kind of condition a little bit and get in shape a little better and then get out there.”

On if missing practice bothered him

“No. No. It bothered me a little, but I’m all for the right thing because in the end, as long as I’m there Sept. 13 (regular-season opener), that’s all that matters.”

Jack Williams and Champ Bailey in Denver Broncos training camp on Saturday Aug 1, 2009 (Josh Temple/BroncoTalk).

Here are few things observed from the other half of the Broncotalk onsite staff for todays practice.

Open Field Defensive Back Tackling Drills

  • Josh Barrett destroyed Travis Shelton in the middle of the field. Easily the hardest hit of the day.
  • Marshall seemed to go down awfully easy in this drill after making contact. Not the B. Marsh we know with the YAC skills he usually displays. Many mentions of Brandon coasting through drills but out performing everyone else come full on scrimmages.

Handoff /Run Defense Drills

  • Tom Brandstater ran all of the handoff drills as the #3 QB.
  • Darius Walker had a nice break into daylight against the front 7 taking it for a would be touchdown.
  • Spencer Larsen manned the RILB spot in the 3.4.
  • Elvis Dumervil played both right DE in the 4-3 and ROLB in the 3-4. Still showing better technique in a 3 point stance, being able to disrupt plays at the line. Doom seemed to have trouble getting enough penetration to get optimal placement when staying home in run coverage with the play away from him. This is especially apparent when the offense runs a stretch play to the opposite sideline. My gut feeling is that he is still best suited to playing defensive end in a 4-3 system. As Kyle noted, he has not lost his aggressiveness, getting after Hillis during a complete team drill. Hopefully he can make the transition to a stand-up LB.

Always good to see #24 back out on the field (Josh Temple/BroncoTalk)

Always good to see #24 back out on the field.

Denver Broncos training camp… news and notes from the 8/1 practice.

Attendance

Brandon Marshall returned to the field, looking sharp. Still no rookies, but the three players who missed Day 1 on the PUP list, Champ Bailey, Renaldo Hill, and Marcus Thomas finally took the field, while Jarvis Moss and Vernon Fox missed the day’s session (the latter due to injury, the former due to idiocy). Nic Clemons was carted off the field near the end of practice after he suffered a left knee injury. Tim Crowder had a close call after a helmet-to-helmet hit with Peyton Hillis. The DE/OLB lay face-down on grass for a solid two minutes before getting up and rubbing his neck. Luckily he finished practice without another issue, participating in the contract drills to boot.

Practice was very physical today, even moreso than yesterday, with full contact drills followed by intense 11-on-11 team skirmishes. What’s more, the session went long again, finishing a full 30 minutes after the scheduled time. They ran two-minute and field goal drills to end practice, and points were hard to come by. Full offense/defense scouting report after the jump. Click here to read the rest of this entry »

Moss

Denver Broncos 2007 first round pick Jarvis Moss is considering retirement, Fox 31 is reporting. The outside linebacker was a noticeable absence from practice on Saturday.

After practice, Head Coach Josh McDaniels said Moss was absent for “very personal reasons.” He did not give any other details.

With Kyle and Josh at Dove Valley (and currently eating dinner), I’m maintaining the head quarters and manning the thirty-three  plus flat screens we have here at BroncoTalk Blog Central (East has a thing for the Oxygen Network and JKJ’s obsessed with Lifetime, do not ask!)… They’ve been busy.

Here’s what we’ve learned so far:

  • Kyle Orton is not guaranteed the starting position at quarterback.
  • Matter of fact none of the Denver Broncos are guaranteed starting spots.
  • Ryan Torain came out bucking, stealing the spotlight amongst the overly talented running back stable.
  • Brandon Marshall blew everyone’s minds.
  • There are no clear answers as to whether Denver’s defensive line has improved.
  • Both Jarvis Moss and Elvis Dumervil lined up (and only) at outside linebacker today.

Denver Broncos training camp… News and notes from the club’s second practice. (UPDATED)

As a rookie training camp attendee, I can’t compare these practices to the workouts of old, but I’ve been told over and over again how different things are in Dove Valley. Practices are more physical (see my twitter update about Chris Kuper). They last longer (I’m told, under Shanahan, they were often cut short. Today’s afternoon practice started early and ended late). And the coaches showed no mercy (finishing the session with three sets of sprints after over two hours of physical football).

I love it.

The practice started with the special teams unit running kickoff drills. Eddie Royal and Alphonso Smith took reps returning here, along with Kenny McKinley and Matthew Willis. At one point, the ball got completely eaten up by the strong winds; Royal sprinted forward several yards and made a dramatic last-second catch. Royal was just getting started; he had a stellar day.

Brandon Marshall sat out the afternoon, held out for what the PR guys simply said was a “coach’s decision,” along with the first-rounders and PUP-listers. Click here to read the rest of this entry »
