D.J. Johnson loosens up with fellow rookie Nate Swift prior to practice at the team's training facility in Englewood, Co - Wednesday July 29, 2009

D.J. Johnson (35) loosens up with fellow rookie Nate Swift (83) prior to practice at the team's training facility in Englewood, Co - Wednesday July 29, 2009

The New York Giants have signed cornerback D.J. Johnson off of the Broncos’ practice squad shortly after ending linebacker Gerris Wilkinson’s season by placing him on inured reserve.  D.J. was brought in as a rookie free agent back in April and hails from Jackson State University.  Johnson has already joined his new team and was seen practicing with the other Giant’s corners during practice this morning.  No news on the Broncos’ official transaction log to indicate which player Denver will sign to the opening left by the corner.  Williams is still being listed with the team on the official site.

UPDATE: Lindsay Jones is reporting via the All Things Broncos Blog that the team has signed cornerback Rashod Moulton to fill the vacancy left by Johnson.  Moulton was a 2008 practice squad holdover and was with the team during training camp.

UPDATE #2: The Broncos officially announced the move this afternoon. Press release, with the lowdown on Moulton, after the jump. Click here to read the rest of this entry »

Ben Hamilton

It’s been a rough couple of weeks for the Denver Broncos, but none have had a rougher outing than starting left guard Ben Hamilton. He was abused against the Ravens‘ and Steelers‘ defensive lines, a significant factor in the offense’s measly 10-point production in that two-loss span.

Now, the Broncos might be making a changing of the guard. Frank Schwab of the Colorado Springs Gazette reports

During the period of practice that is open to the media, Russ Hochstein took repetitions with the starting offense during individual work, while Ben Hamilton worked with the second team. No announcement has been made on a starting lineup change and the Broncos’ official depth chart still lists Hamilton as the starter, so a move has not been made official. However, when the Broncos’ first-team line was working as a unit, Hochstein was the left guard.

Can you believe it’s Week 10 already? My, how this season has flown…. The latest weekly goodness from the Broncos PR dept. Read the entire release here.

The Denver Broncos, who are 6-2 at the halfway point of the season for the third time in the last five years, begin the second part of their 2009 campaign on the road Sunday against the Washington Redskins. Kickoff at FedEx Field is set for 1 p.m. EST.

QUICKLY:

  • The Broncos held a 10-7 lead in the third quarter against Pittsburgh last week on Monday Night Football before the Steelers pulled away for a 28-10 victory.
  • Denver’s current roster features 32 players in their first season with the club (58.2 percent of its roster including reserve lists). The Broncos’ 28 new players on its opening game 53-man roster tied for the sixth most in the league since 1994.
  • Josh McDaniels was named the head coach on Pro Football Weekly’s and Peter King’s (Sports Illustrated) midseason All-Pro teams.

Invesco Field at Mile High

With 1:22 left in the fourth quarter, Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward leapt over Denver Broncos cornerback Champ Bailey, strode through the end zone and straight to a throng of black-and-gold-clad Steeler fans, taking only a moment to find one donning his #86 jersey.

As Ward put the football in the fan’s hands, and the game out of reach, I wondered aloud which was more disgusting: the ease of Ward’s touchdown, or the ease of which he found a migrating fan wearing his jersey in Denver’s stadium?

The City of Pittburgh completely overwhelmed every inch of Invesco Field at Mile High Monday night, from the front row to the luxury suites to the nosebleeds to the hashmarks. And every Broncos fan — you and I included — shares the brunt of the blame. Click here to read the rest of this entry »

Broncos 10, Steelers 28. Alright, gentlemen, who ya got?

Josh McDanielsDud: Coaching Staff/Inability to make the right half-time adjustments
What concerned me the most out of this game was not Ben Hamilton’s continued struggles, or Kyle Orton’s under-pressure interceptions or even our lack of a running game… It was the stark difference between our half-time adjustments and the Steeler’s adjustments. In the first half we completely dominated all the stats (except score). Most important, we had Time of Posession., 3rd Down Conversions and Offensive Yardage by more than double the Steelers. However, after the ‘NFL’s Fastest 3 Minutes’ the tables turned and it was the Steelers that completely dominated the last two quarters of the game. They whipped us in all three of the above categories and that killed our chance to stay 2 games ahead of the Chargers. So, I feel like the must egregious dud this week is our coaching staff’s inability to make the proper adjustments at half-time. – Jonathan Douglas

Postgame quotes after the Denver Broncos‘ 28-10 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers Monday night.

DENVER BRONCOS HEAD COACH JOSH McDANIELS

General

“Let’s start by giving credit to the Steelers. They are certainly a well-coached football team, [Pittsburgh Steelers Head Coach] Mike Tomlin certainly does  a good job getting them prepared every week. We knew we would have to play 60 good minutes of football to compete, and had an opportunity to win there at the end.  I felt like we did that for a half and then they ultimately  took over the game there in the second half and we struggled to do much offensively, struggled to stop them defensively, and really they took over the game there.”

The NFL’s masters of the second half have been exposed.

The Denver Broncos couldn’t get their ground game going, rushing for 27 total yards and only one yard in the second half. Kyle Orton had his worst game as a Bronco, throwing three interceptions, one returned for a touchdown. And the Pittsburgh Steelers showed why they are the world champions, taking control in the second half, exposing Denver’s rush defense and dominating in all phases.

Both teams now sit at 6-2 after the Steelers rolled to a 28-10 win at INVESCO Field at Mile High.
