For years, Decembers in Arrowhead saw the storybook rivalry between the Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs painted red.

The Broncos came into Sunday’s Week 13 game in Missouri boasting a pitiful 1-17 record in Arrowhead in December. Their only such win came in overtime over a decade ago under Wade Philips, who only coached the Broncos for two season. Long-time Broncos coaches Dan Reeves and Mike Shanahan had never won in the Chiefs’ stadium in December.

On Sunday, the Broncos started a new chapter. Click here to read the rest of this entry »

Barrel Man (Tim McKernan) argues with an Oakland Raider fan, Nov 5, 2001

Barrel Man (Tim McKernan) argues with an Oakland Raider fan in the Black Hole, Nov 5, 2001

The franchise has lost its most recognizable fan; our beloved barrel man has passed away at age 69.  Tim McKernan was better known as the Broncos super fan for all of those years, attending since 1967 and originally donning his first barrel in 1977 painted to look like an orange crush bottle. The costume idea came from a brotherly bet.

“He wanted to see me on TV out in California,” McKernan said. “I had painted a barrel to make a drum out of it to look like an Orange Crush can, told him about it and he bet me 10 bucks that I didn’t have the guts to wear nothing but the barrel to a ball game.”

Tim became famous for attending all of those games wearing little other than a Broncos barrel and cowboy hat.  He became the team’s iconic unofficial mascot.  Sorry huddles, leprechaun, thunder, miles and pom pom yetis.  Barrel Man is and always will be our #1 team mascot.  You could even say he was the first Bronco into the Pro Football Hall of Fame technically.  Elected as one of the league’s super-fans along with The Hogettes, Fireman Ed, and Crazy Ray to name a few of the group.  Click here to read the rest of this entry »

The NFL has fined Denver Broncos outside linebacker Darrell Reid $10,000 for displaying unnecessary roughness against the New York Giants Thursday, the Denver Post reports.

Reid struck his opponent “in the head area” with his elbow, an act that came with a warning and one that the NFL describes as a “flagrant violation.”

Reid has already made public his intentions to appeal the fine via Twitter (strongly, we might add).

This is less about the fine and appeal and more about new media, and how it is changing the face of sports journalism. Reid saw the Post’s report (on twitter), reacted to it, then posted his reaction (on twitter) for his 1,700+ followers to see. Click here to read the rest of this entry »

Knowshon Moreno‘s 88 rushing yards and one touchdown against the New York Giants in Week 12 paved the way for the Denver Broncos‘ first round pick to earn NFL Rookie of the Week honors, the NFL announced today.  Moreno totaled 107 yards from scrimmage in the Broncos’ 26-6 win over the G-Men Thanksgiving night.

It is the third such award of Moreno’s career, tying him with Jets QB Mark Sanchez as the most weekly-trophied rookie in 2009.

Moreno is making a late push for Rookie of the Year, an award some suggest has already been locked up by Vikings WR Percy Harvin.  His yards per carry are way up, and his pass protection has improved.  If he can continue his pace of late (and keep the fumbles to a minimum), he can still reach that magic 1,000-yard mark and, maybe, give the annual award voters something to think about.

The Line: Broncos by 4.5

Who’s hot: RB Jamaal Charles. With Larry Johnson gone the way of the Bengal, their backup is playing a lot better than L.J. ever did in 2009. Charles rushed for 93 yards (6.6 average) against San Diego Sunday that included a 31-yard scamper and a touchdown. He’s averaging 5.2 yards per carry on the year.
