Willie Clark

Willie Clark

The 12-member jury of the Darrent Williams murder trial is expected to begin deliberations Wednesday, nearly two weeks into presentations of over three years of evidence.

The suspect, Willie Clark, opted not to testify in his own defense Monday. The prosecution has called two rebuttal witnesses today, at least one of whom decided to testify after initially refusing and being imprisoned for contempt.

Closing arguments are expected this afternoon.

Several witnesses have testified, often overcoming fear for their own lives and the lives of their loved ones, that they had seen or heard Clark admit shooting at Williams’ stretch Hummer limousine that night. As this Denver Daily News article details (note: the article is dated Wednesday, March 10th; our guess is the editor didn’t intend to publish this story until then), one such witness, Julian, is expected to testify today that Clark admitted to the shooting several times. Javon Walker

Even by Chokeland standards, this blunder was particularly suffocating.

After two seasons completely devoid of any type of production (but not without plenty of dollar signs), the Oakland Raiders waived wide receiver Javon Walker Monday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports.

Walker signed a six-year, $55 million deal in 2008 with $27 million to be paid in the contract’s first three years. According to Sports Illustrated’s Peter King, Walker was paid $21 million of that over his 24 months in Oakland. He tallied 15 catches and one touchdown in that span.

The Raiders also waived defensive end Greg Ellis Monday.

The Javon Walker signing might go down as the worst free agent move in NFL history. Only the Raiders…

Jarvis Green

One thing is certain: the Denver Broncos are seriously focusing on the defensive line in the early stages of free agency.

Defensive end Jarvis Green, most recently of the New England Patriots, will start his free agency tour on Monday with a visit to the Denver Broncos, the Boston Globe reports. Green is scheduled to arrive in Denver today and visit with Broncos brass through tomorrow.

Green (6-3, 285) is looking to take advantage of his “unique position” as the only pass-rushing defensive linemen in the 3-4 scheme in this year’s free agent crop, his agent told the Boston Herald last week:

Green and his agent, Albert Elias, sat back during the first few days of free agency, making phone calls and focusing on how teams would use him instead of taking visits. …

San Diego Chargers defensive lineman Jamal Williams is visiting the Denver Broncos Monday

Free agent San Diego Chargers defensive lineman Jamal Williams is visiting the Denver Broncos Monday

The Denver Broncos are visiting with unrestricted free agent defensive lineman Jamal Williams today, tweets Michael Lombardi of the National Football Post. Per Lombardi, the longtime San Diego Chargers nose tackle is expected to take a physical in Denver.

Williams played under current Broncos defensive line coach Wayne Nunnely for much of his career (10+ years) when both were in San Diego.

Williams is scheduled to visit the New Orleans Saints if he and the Broncos don’t come to terms during this visit.

Combined with the signing of Justin Bannan on Friday, this would add some serious beef to that defensive line. Williams comes with serious injury concerns, and he isn’t the same dominant player he was five years ago. But he’s definitely worth a kicking-of-the-tires.

Knowshon Moreno

Despite a knee injury that has required multiple surgeries in the past twelve months, the Denver Broncos are giving running back J.J. Arrington another chance in 2010.

Some in league circles believe it’s because the Broncos know they can’t rely on Knowshon Moreno and Correll Buckhalter. As the Denver Post notes, league personnel executives have said Moreno wore down as the year went on —

With Knowshon Moreno, in the eyes of many personnel excutives around the league, having worn down as the season wore on in 2009, Arrington’s signing means he could take some of that situational work in the backfield away from Moreno if the veteran’s right knee will hold up.

As draft day approaches, we will be giving you game tape highlights of some of the bigger (and smaller) names around the draft.  We will kick off the first few days by selecting players that are very likely to be selected by Denver in the 1st round.  We’ve always prided ourselves on giving you a pre-draft glimpse of at least the Broncos #1 selection.  Today’s video collection is that of Oklahoma State wide receiver: Dez Bryant.  Bryant’s likelihood of becoming a Denver Bronco has risen immensely with news of Brandon Marshall possibly leaving town.

The first clip contains all of the highlights and low lights of Dez’s 2008 season and 2009 partial season.  Bryant ran into “off the field trouble” with the NCAA for not disclosing the complete details of a day he spent with Deion Sanders in Dallas.  A day in which he spent time with the former NFL CB at his football camp Prime U, had lunch and visited Sanders’ home.  By leaving out details of the trip, the NCAA suspended Bryant for the remainder of the 2009 season.  The second clip shown reviews all of this in detail, including Bryant’s interview on these events at the combine along with his draft stock.  Former Texans’ GM Charlie Casserly does an interesting evaluation.  The third video is every “Bryant play” during the Oklahoma Stave vs. Oklahoma 2008 matchup.

The Denver Broncos are holding firm on their first round draft pick asking price for wide receiver Brandon Marshall, reports Michael Lombardi of the National Football Post.

I fully expect another team to jump into the Brandon Marshall sweepstakes at some point this week. Not certain which team, but it appears Marshall has more than one team interested in his services. I do know this: The Denver Broncos won’t negotiate a trade for Marshall. Either a team is prepared to pay a first-rounder or move along. Denver will not take calls on Marshall; it’s either an offer sheet or he plays in Denver next season. If Seattle really wants Marshall, it will take the sixth pick in the draft…

Surprising? Yes. Many figured the Broncos would have been taking calls on Marshall for some time. According to this report, Josh McDaniels is sticking to his guns.

Cleveland Browns C Rex Hadnot visited with the Denver Broncos Friday

Offensive lineman Rex Hadnot, one of five unrestricted free agents reported to be visiting the Denver Broncos this weekend, has left Dove Valley without a contract, FOX 31’s Josina Anderson reports.

Hadnot (6’2″, 320 lbs.), a six-year veteran with the Miami Dolphins and Cleveland Browns, started in six games for the Browns in 2009 while struggling through a left knee injury. Hadnot is a versatile lineman with experience at all three interior positions on the offensive line. Click here to read the rest of this entry »

Ben Hamilton
Ben Hamilton

Unrestricted free agent Denver Broncos offensive linemen Ben Hamilton and Casey Wiegmann are drawing some interest in the open market. However, at just under 48 hours into free agency, neither has converted a visit into a new contract.

Hamilton is scheduled to visit with the Seattle Seahawks (who are also hosting Broncos restricted free agent WR Brandon Marshall), and, according to the Denver Post, is drawing interest from other teams.

Meanwhile, Wiegmann visited with the Washington Redskins and new head coach Mike Shanahan. He left town without a contract, according to the Washington Post. Wiegmann earned a career-first Pro Bowl selection in his one year under Shanahan in 2008. Click here to read the rest of this entry »
