Denver Broncos blog, news and rumors

Sorry about the delay in posts, I promised myself that I wouldn’t let football get in the way of my coursework this year. However, I am back and ready to write a lot of posts pertaining to the draft. The new forum of the draft puts us a day closer to knowing who will be added to Broncos roster (provided Denver doesn’t trade out of round 1). With the Marshall trade Denver now has three picks in the top 45 slots of the draft. With rumors that Tony Scheffler is headed to the Bengals, the picks could pile up. Keep in mind with a defense this old Denver needs all the picks they can get.

Round 1

Does anyone actually have a clue of what Josh McDaniels and Brian Xanders are going to do here? To be logical you could assume that they will target a linebacker, center, or a guard seeing how they showed Casey Weigmann, Andra Davis, and Ben Hamilton the door. However, don’t bank Mike Iupati this high or at all for that matter. Josh McDaniels resigned Ross Hochstein and he just might keep him on as band-aid status. So who goes to the Mile High City in round one? Click here to read the rest of this entry »

In a move not likely to result in a trade finally, Denver Broncos quarterback Kyle Orton has signed his restricted free agent tender reportedly.

Orton, who was tendered at the first round level, signed a one year contract worth $2.621 million.

The Broncos now have three quarterbacks under contract going into the draft. However, expect Denver to sign at least one more, “Camp arm,” before the start of training camp.

Orton faces stiff competition for his starting position for the second preseason in a row as a Broncos quarterback. Although he remains the teams starter according to head coach Josh McDaniels.

April 15th was the NFL’s deadline for teams to send restricted free agents offer sheets before their rights were reverted to their current teams. Orton’s signing comes one day after Tony Scheffler signed his tender.

Elvis Dumervil remains the only Bronco who has yet to sign his tender. Dumervil was tendered as a 1st and a 3rd round.

Tony Scheffler

Tony Scheffler, come on down! You’re the next contestant on Sign your Tender, Get Traded!

The Denver Broncos tight end is hoping recent history repeats itself. Hours after Brandon Marshall was traded to the Miami Dolphins following the wide receiver signing his restricted free agent tender Tuesday, Scheffler has decided to sign his one-year deal to that same end, the Denver Post’s Mike Klis reports.

Scheffler has been reportedly unhappy with his role in Head Coach Josh McDaniels‘ offense. He totaled 416 yards in 2009, nine less catches and 229 less yards than his 2008 production, where he played in two less games. Click here to read the rest of this entry »

Brandon Marshall

Wide receiver Brandon Marshall‘s tumultuous, spectacular, and controversial career as a Denver Bronco has come to an end.

The Broncos on Wednesday agreed to trade Marshall to the Miami Dolphins for two second-round draft picks, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports. The Broncos will receive the Fins’ 43rd overall pick in the 2010 draft and an additional second round pick next year.

Per Schefter, the trade is contingent upon Marshall passing a physical in Miami Wednesday. The Dolphins are expected to sign him to one of the “most lucrative wide receiver deals in NFL history.”

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter Denver Broncos wide receiver Brandon Marshall has signed his restricted free agency tender.

Schefter went on to tweet that this one year contract worth $2.5 million will make it easier for the Broncos to facilitate a trade. Whether the trade is inevitable or when the trade will take place is not apparent at this time.

KDVR Fox 31’s Josina Anderson reported earlier today that there were a couple of interesting teams in contention for Marshall’s services at this moment.

Denver Post beat writer Lindsay Jones, like Schefter, is immediately calling this a giant step in the move towards trading Marshall away from the Mile High City. As this move allows Denver to officially talk trade with interested teams, emphasizing that there is little chance that he will remain with the Broncos.

In a possibly related note the Broncos are scheduled to meet with a likely first round draft pick, wide receiver Dez Bryant this week according to a Scout.com report. Then as I pointed out in a tweet early this morning, the Broncos are also scheduled to meet with quarterback Tim Tebow.

The Seattle Seahawks are a known interested party, but the Miami Dolphins (who are reportedly interested in getting rid of wide receiver Ted Ginn, Jr. and possibly even running back Ronnie Brown) also may be interested.

Then there are those, “interesting,” teams…

UPDATE (11:07 PM EST 04/13/10):

ESPN’s John Clayton said on ESPN2, “Something could happen with Brandon Marshall in the next 24 hours.”

So thanks for that ESPN, no, seriously… Thanks.

Either way, the clock is ticking (or is it?).

My lord, and we thought our team treated our star wide receiver bad. According to, well everywhere, Super Bowl XLIII MVP Santonio Holmes was traded to the wide receiver needy Jets for a lousy 5th round pick. Holmes, despite being one of the best in the NFL, has had several off the field issues ever since joining the league. Where have I heard this before?

Holmes latest incident involving him throwing a glass at a woman and cutting her above the eye at a nightclub in Orlando. He is now most likely facing a four game suspension. Holmes then gracefully handled this situation by telling one “fan” via Twitter that “he shud [should] try finding the worst thing that you could [can] n [and] kill urself [yourself]”. My guess is that either Santonio didn’t get the best out of his Ohio State education (unlike one of our faithful readers), or he’s just not a fan of the 140 character limit.

Santonio then decided that he wasn’t done with making a fool out of himself on Twitter. He then wrote one eloquently phrased ‘tweet’ where he declared his desire to “wake n bake”. Which leaves us thinking either he’s a fan of cooking in the morning or marijuana. Since Holmes was charged with possession of marijuana back in 2008 we all might know what he meant.

Nonetheless, the fact of the matter is if a Super Bowl MVP can be traded for a measly 5th round pick, what does this mean for Brandon Marshall? Click here to read the rest of this entry »

We all know that another key member of our Super Bowl dynasty retired last week. Jason Elam ended his 17 year career ranked sixth in NFL history with 1983 points scored. He jointly holds the record for the longest field goal (63 yards). He went to three Pro Bowls, and personally accounted for 26 career game-winning or game-saving field goals. He will go into the Ring of Fame, he might go into the Hall of Fame and he most certainly was the best damn kicker in Broncos history.

I’d like to add my personal fan-based ‘thank you’ to ole #1…

One over Orton.

One over Orton.

Kyle Sonneman (a good friend of the site) just published at The Official Page a few of the numbers that the new Denver Broncos will be wearing:

Brady Quinn – 9
Alphonso Smith – 22
Nate Jones – 33
Baraka Atkins – 58
Dustin Fry – 62
Jarvis Green – 93

As you can see Quinn has one upped Kyle Orton in taking number nine (Orton wears number eight). I’m just joshin’ you of course; this is nothing like when Kobe Bryant took the number twenty four.

Alphonso Smith switched out of his old number (thirty three) and took Peyton Hillis’ abandoned jersey, then Nate Jones snatched Smith’s old number up.

I’ve been splitting my time lately between monitoring everything Bronco-related and watching what Mike Shanahan is doing in Washington.

I think it’s interesting that both teams have made QB moves this off-season. I know it’s hard to compare Brady Quinn coming to Denver with the bombshell of Donovan McNabb‘s inner-divisional move to the Redskins, but I think it clearly points to the pervasive idea that you need a star signal-caller to make it to the Big Game these days.

McNabb’s move may not seem like it directly effects the folks of the Mile High City, but I for one certainly think it impacts Bronco fans in a big way. As a long-time follower of Shanahan, I can tell you one thing that will most certainly happen now that McNabb has been officially introduced to DC today…

Expect a serious push by Shanahan to acquire Brandon Marshall.

Here’s my reasoning…

By now Broncos Nation have undoubtedly seen that The Denver Post has reported that Brandon Marshall got married to his fiancee Michi Nogami-Campbell last week on April 1st, by a Judge in Arapahoe County (near Denver).

Now, I’m no forensic scientist, but I am a blogger… That doesn’t give me much of a license at all, but here it goes:

According to ESPN The Magazine the newly nuptialed Marshall’s wedding date was scheduled to be June 19th, 2010. So unless the Marshall’s are merely trying to cash in on some type of pre-April 15th (tax day, also happens to be the final day for teams to sign other teams restricted free agents to offer sheets) incentive, they felt the need to get married now and they chose to do it in Denver.

Possibly as a spur of the moment romantic gesture, but more likely because sub-consciously he feels that he’s not going anywhere.

Now I could be completely off my rocker (and I often am), but from the moment I saw that, one- this marriage was pushed forward and, two- that they chose to do it in Denver; not Orlando, not Las Vegas, not The Cayman Islands or Jamaica… I felt as if something was up.

You don’t, “Hate this ****** city,” (Denver) and chose to personally immortalize it as the place where you get married to the person that you hope to spend the rest of your life with.

The fact that he was in Denver period should mean something (he could be in Orlando or Atlanta, eek), look at what trades have transpired around the NFL this offseason.

A trade from the Arizona Cardinals to the Baltimore Ravens for Anquan Boldin and last night a trade between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Washington Redskins for Donovan McNabb. The thing that they all have in common is that they were all possible landing spots for Marshall and now they’re not.

The other thing those trades have in common is that none of them involved a first round draft pick. Marshall’s worth a first round draft pick not just because of his talent, but because of his age.

The Broncos shouldn’t give Marshall up for anything less than a first round draft pick and I don’t see them doing that unless there’s a player available while the draft is occuring that Brian Xanders and Josh McDaniels feel as if they just can’t live without at that pick. Marshall will be in a Broncos uniform in 2010 barring a Jaimie Dukes style, ‘Bombshell’.

Let’s have it Nation. I can definitely see Marshall being a hold out, but given his recent statements message it is about the money and he would like to stay in Denver. So Marshall is going to force Denver’s hand and the Broncos may very well end up stacked at the wide receiver position as a result.
