J.D. WaltonOn His Natural Position

“Definitely would have to go with the center position, but I’m down to play any position on the offensive line.”

On His Surprise about Being Drafted by the Broncos

“On Draft Day, I was very surprised and very blessed to be able to come to (the Broncos). I had an idea because they came down and worked me out and then flew me out (to Denver), so it was all just waiting on the call and waiting for it to happen. I am very, very happy and very, very excited to be a Bronco.” Click here to read the rest of this entry »

The Denver Broncos went a whole day without any movement in the draft, surprisingly.

They began the evening drafting Utah’s Zane Beadles, a tackle who most analysts say can play any position on the offensive line, except center.

In the third round the Broncos stuck with the offensive line and drafted center J.D. Walton (6’3″, 305 lbs.) out of Baylor. Walton was an All American, Outland and Rimington Trophy candidate who became the 80th overall draft pick. He started every game for Baylor (24) after beginning his career as a redshirted Freshman at Arizona State and sitting a year after the transfer to Baylor.

Later in the third round the Broncos drafted wide receiver Eric Decker (6’3″, 217 lbs.) out of Minnesota, 87th overall. Decker had the highest Wonderlic score at the combine (43, didn’t know that it went that high) this year. He is a two sport athlete (baseball) and prior to the 2009 season he was regarded by Sports Illustrated columnist Stewart Mandel as the third best receiver in the country (behind Dez Bryant and A.J. Green).

The pick for Walton makes sense, but drafting Decker there is pure Bill Belichick. Belichick loves smart players, former New England Patriots tight end Ben Watson reportedly had a 49 (out of 50) on the Wonderlic test. Time will tell and the Broncos still have a very glaring need at linebacker and possibly could pick up a running back with the two remaining picks.

Denver does not have a 4th round draft pick as of this post, but do have a 5th (137th) and 6th (183rd) tomorrow.

Zane Beadles

The Denver Broncos continue their offensive focus in the 2010 NFL Draft, selecting offensive lineman Zane Beadles with the 45th overall pick Friday.

Beadles (6’4″, 310 lbs.) hails from Utah, where he played guard as a freshman in 2006 but moved to left tackle thereafter through his senior year. Pro scouts project him to move back inside at guard at the pro level, which would fill one of the Broncos’ biggest needs heading into this weekend’s draft.

As a tackle, Beadles was named first-team All-American in 2009 by the Football Writers Association of America. He started in 50 games as a four-year starter for the Utes.

A big, young, physical offensive lineman to fill this hollow interior o-line is just what the doctor ordered. On paper, Beadles is a good fit. Check back for a full scouting report to come.

Josh McDaniels‘s reputation as an NFL coach has largely been built off the quality of quarterbacks he has coached with the New England Patriots and Denver Broncos.

Now that reputation is beginning to shift to reflect the quantity of quarterbacks he coaches instead.

After the Denver Broncos selected Florida quarterback Tim Tebow in the first round of the NFL Draft Friday, the Broncos have a surplus of signal-callers. McDaniels now has four quarterbacks under his tutelage: Tebow, starter Kyle Orton, recent trade acquisition Brady Quinn, and 2009 sixth-round draft pick Tom Brandstater.

While McDaniels was quick to reaffirm Orton as his starter — Quinn is the only other to have started an NFL game, and he’s 2-7 — he wouldn’t rule out a possible changing at the helm if someone impresses in training camp. Click here to read the rest of this entry »

The Denver Broncos‘ first round of the 2010 NFL Draft is in the books, with Josh McDaniels and company selecting wide receiver Demaryius Thomas 22nd overall and quarterback Tim Tebow 25th.

It’s hard to fault the Broncos for trading out of the 11th spot, but both selections have been classified by various experts as reaches in the first round. Thomas is fast and physical but lacks polish, while Tebow is the most controversial, boom-or-bust pick of the draft.

How would you grade the first day of the Broncos’ 2010 draft? Take the poll and dish it out in the comments.

On if he had an inkling that the Broncos were going to draft him

“It all started at the combine. I had an opportunity to do an interview with their staff and I left thinking ‘Gosh I love those guys, I love Coach McDaniels. He’s so passionate, he loves football.’ After that they didn’t come to the Pro day and I didn’t hear from them and I thought, ‘Man, are they not interested?’ But then at the end they called me up and so I came up and I did a work out for them and I thought that went really good and we thought they liked me and were very straightforward the whole time and said that they were interested in me. So we prepared as thought I was their draft pick. So we had the hats ready and when Coach McDaniels called we pulled them out and we’re wearing our pride right now.” Click here to read the rest of this entry »
