Dolphins Marshall Football

On the field, Miami Dolphins wide receiver Brandon Marshall is as productive as they come.  Off the field however, he’s had a hard time staying out of trouble.

The latest incident:  he was stabbed in the stomach on Friday by his wife, Michi Nagomi-Marshall, who married Marshall in 2010.  Mr. Marshall reportedly had minor surgery, but his injuries were not life-threatening.  His wife was arrested on Friday evening, the day it happened, and was released today, on $7,500 bond.

Mrs. Marshall confessed to police that she stabbed Marshall with a kitchen knife – in self-defense, while Marshall himself testified that he slipped and fell on a broken glass vase (you’ve used the “I slipped” line before, Marshall, and it didn’t hold up).

Marshall was previously arrested in March of 2009 when fighting with Nagomi, who at the time was his fiancé.  Marshall was released from the hospital on Saturday morning. The sheriff’s office said the case remains under investigation.

We wish Brandon a speedy recovery.  This certainly won’t help his tarnished image.  Thanks to Fan From Spain for the link to the article.

Clemson Pro Day Football

The 2011 NFL Draft is now less than a week away and unless they trade down, the Denver Broncos will be selecting second overall.  We’re counting down the top seven prospects to be selected by the Broncos with their first pick.

Number five: Clemson defensive end Da’Quan Bowers (pronounced DAH-QUAN Bowers).  A 6-4 foot, 277 pound defensive stud, Bowers is considered one of the top prospects in this years draft.

A bit of a one-year wonder, Bowers recorded 67 tackles, 16 sacks and one forced fumble as a junior in 2010.  In his previous two combined seasons, Bowers only recorded four sacks, causing many scouts and analysts to wonder: what took so long for it to click for him?

Another young prospect (21), Bowers was named the ACC Defensive Player of the Year last season, Bowers was one of the most disruptive pass rusher and run stuffing defensive end in college football in 2010.  Bowers did not participate in the NFL Scouting combine field drills, but did do 22 bench press repetitions.  He is projected to be a high pick in the first round of the upcoming NFL Draft. The 2011 NFL Draft is now less than a week away and unless they trade down, the Denver Broncos will be selecting second overall.  We’re counting down the top seven prospects to be selected by the Broncos with their first pick.

Number six:  North Carolina defensive end Robert Quinn.  A 6-4 foot, 265 pound defensive end, Quinn would probably be ranked higher among top defensive prospects if he had not been suspended for the entire 2010 collegiate season.

As a sophomore in 2009, Quinn recorded 52 tackles, 11 sacks and two forced fumbles and was an All-ACC selection.  One of the upsides to Quinn is his young age (he is only 20 years old), so he could contribute on a defense for years to come.  During the NFL’s scouting combine, Quinn recorded a 4.70 timed forty-yard dash, a 34-inch vertical jump and 24 bench press repetitions.  He is expected to be a high pick in the first round. Here we go again, another haiku for you. And yes, another Haiku hero has emerged.

This week’s topic? The QB Smokescreen, or if you believe otherwise, What QB Smokescreen?

Like always, I’ll take the first crack at it.

NFL Combine Football

The 2011 NFL Draft is now just a week away and unless they trade down, the Denver Broncos will be selecting second overall. Over the next seven days, we are going to count down the top seven prospects to be selected by the Broncos with their first pick.

Number seven:  Nebraska Cornhuskers cornerback Prince Amukamara(pronounced ah-MOO-kuh-mare-uh).  A 6-0 foot, 206 pound defensive back, Amukamara is considered one of the top defensive prospects in this year’s draft.

As a junior in 2009, Prince was a first-team All-Big 12 selection after recording 60 tackles, two sacks, and five interceptions.  He was named an All-American his senior year, and though he did not record any interceptions, opposing teams only completed 18 of 52 passes thrown towards him.

A young prospect (21), Amukamara recorded a 4.38 timed 40-yard dash, 15 reps in the bench press and a 38 inch vertical jump at the NFL’s annual scouting combine.  He is projected to be anywhere from a top-ten pick to a mid-first-round selection next Thursday.

Elway said the team is looking to get four "really, really, really good players in the draft." (Photo by Justin Edmonds/Getty Images)

On Wednesday, Denver Broncos Vice President of Football Operations John Elway and team General Manager Brian Xanders held a pre-draft press conference with the media.  During the conference, Elway noted that the team has had “no contact” with other teams concerning trading down in the upcoming NFL Draft.  Xanders noted that those calls will start the day before the draft.

Xanders went on to say that the team may not even receive any calls, or they may receive a lot of offers.  They’ll have a plan for every scenario, prepared to trade back or select a player second overall.  Elway also said that there are “four to five” guys that the team would be extremely happy with, so they are not concerned about who will be drafted first overall.

This either means the rumor that Denver was in talks with the Redskins and Cardinals is either false or the Broncos are lying through their teeth, the former seeming more likely.  At any rate, the Broncos have admitted they will be willing to trade down, if the price is right. 2011 will mark the Broncos 20th consecutive season of playing at least one game on Monday Night Football.Â

On Tuesday, the Denver Broncos announced their regular season schedule for the upcoming 2011 NFL season.  Among the team’s notable games is a Monday Night season opener, a Thursday Night game, a Christmas Eve game and a game on New Years Day.

The last time the Broncos opened a season on Monday Night Football was in 2008 when the team beat the Oakland Raiders, 41-14, in Oakland.  The last time the team faced the Raiders at home however (where they’ll be playing them on September 12th this year), the Broncos lost 59-14 in one of the worst games in franchise history (which fittingly came in one the worst seasons in franchise history). The game will air on ESPN.

The Broncos will again be in the National Television spotlight on November 17th when the team takes on the New York Jets, Denver’s second prime time game of the year played at home.  The last time the Broncos faced the Jets was in 2009 when a pass interference call gave New York the ball on Denver’s two-yard line and ultimately cost Denver the game.  Needless to say, revenge will be on the mind of Broncos and their fans.  The game will air on the NFL Network.

Denver will travel to Buffalo later in the year to face the Bills for the second time in 2011 on Christmas Eve (they’ll also play them at home in the preseason on August 20th).  The Broncos have had many memorable games against the Bills over the years (the Chinese fire drill, and Brandon Stokley‘s drop come to mind), expect this one to follow suit.  Personally, there would be no greater gift than waking up on Christmas morning after a Broncos win.  The game will air on CBS. If Denver's offensive line is to improve, the starting five must be retained if for nothing else but continuity. (Photo by Doug Pensinger/Getty Images)

In 2010, the Denver Broncos had the 26th worst rushing attack in the NFL and much of the blame was placed upon the offensive linemen, somewhat fairly so.  The offensive line also allowed 40 sacks (a gruesome number when you consider the team’s 2008 squad allowed only 12 sacks).

In their defense, throughout much of the season that offensive line was playing with inexperienced guard Stanley Daniels and fellow back-up guard Russ Hochstein, among others.  The running backs also weren’t doing much to help the cause (images of Laurence Maroney dancing in the backfield for half a minute before finally hitting the hole which had since been closed by the middle linebacker flash through my mind).

When, towards the end of the season, the original line was back in place (Clady, Beadles, Walton, Kuper and Harris), Denver’s rushing attack improved week after week and the quarterbacks (mostly rookie Tim Tebow) received more time in pocket – which resulted in better decision making and an improved offense.

Continuity will be the key if the Broncos’ offensive line is to continue to improve next season, (if there is a season).  For an offensive line to be successful, the group has to mesh and work together well, and that’s just what Denver’s offensive line did at the conclusion of 2010.  The Broncos should do everything in their power to keep the offensive line in tact, retaining all of the above mentioned original five starters.

“I’m really excited about what we have going up front,” said Broncos starting left guard Zane Beadles on Saturday.  “I think we have a lot of young talent and the more we play together the better we’ll get.”
