Denver Broncos blog, news and rumors

For two days in a row, Denver fans have been able to awake to a signing of a brand spankin’ new defensive tackle. According to Adam Schefter the Broncos have signed yet another former Patriot and first rounder in Ty Warren.

Broncos land former Patriots DE Ty Warren with a 2-year, $10 million deal that includes $2.5 million guaranteed.

The Patriots traditionally use a 3-4 defense. However, weighing in at 300 pounds and hitting some ceiling fans at 6 foot 5 inches, Warren shouldn’t have too much of a problem playing in the 4-3.

Another point of interest is, according to PFT, the Patriots use a 4-3 alignment roughly half the time anyway. Therefore, Warren, a nine season veteran, will be far from clueless in making the scheme ‘change.’

What do you think Bronco nation? Like the signing of Warren?

Ryan Harris

UPDATE: Following his visit with the Broncos, Ryan Harris agreed to terms with the Philadelphia Eagles. What a trendsetter.

The Denver Broncos are expected to add a missing piece to their offensive line Tuesday — a missing piece they already had.

Free agent offensive tackle Ryan Harris is, officially, “visiting” the Denver Broncos as a free agent today, reports the Denver Post. The fourth-year lineman out of Notre Dame is expected to sign the deal today, according to the report.

Harris had an impressive start to his career in Denver but has been marred by injuries. The Broncos drafted OT Orlando Franklin in the 2nd round and intend for him to be the starter at right tackle; Harris can provide depth and competition on the right side as well as backup experience for Ryan Clady at left tackle.

Harris’ “visit” mirrors the situation of his draft classmate Marcus Thomas, who signed a one-year deal with the Broncos following a free agent visit last week.

Competition at right tackle and depth at left are both good things. Let’s hope they get this deal done.

What is that over the horizon? A six foot, two inch, three hundred and six pound defensive tackle who is only twenty seven?!

Yes, indeed it is! According to ESPN, the Eagles have dealt former first round pick Brodrick Bunkley to the Broncos for a ‘2013 draft pick.’

Bunkley was initially traded to the Browns for a fifth round pick in 2012, but since he did not show up the deal was cancelled.

Bunkley was drafted 14th overall in 2006, and has notched six sacks in his six seasons in Philadelphia. Since coming out of FSU, Bunkley has not lived up to his full potential with the Eagles. Hopefully John Fox can fix that problem.

After perusing the Denver Post blog and noticing Lindsay Jones’ latest questioning of wide receiver Matt Willis and his ninja training regimen, I noticing a few oddly similar instances popping up.  I think we have a full blown conspiracy theory on our hands.  Dove Valley may look like your average training camp by day, but come nightfall masters of ninjutsu are at work.  Sure, you could just chalk all this up to confirmation bias, but I’d rather get all Mel Gibson on these headlines.  Take that DIA complex conspiracy theory.  Lockout in place, what is your young wideout to do?  Compete on Ninja Warrior of course, makes perfect sense.  Yeah, that’s a reasonable workout option, sure.  Resistance pool training is for Prima Donnas.

  • Denver is trying to sign defensive tackle Jamaal Anderson, the No. 8 overall pick in the 2007 draft, and Ty Warren, the No. 13 overall pick in the 2003 draft.  [First-And-Orange]
  • Former first round draft pick Derrick Harvey has agreed to terms with Denver, adding more depth to the defensive end position.  [Previously on BroncoTalk]
  • Last season, Mario Haggan played outside linebacker.  Entering camp, Haggan was moved to defensive end.  Yesterday, Haggan was moved back to the strongside linebacker position behind rookie Von Miller.  [First-And-Orange]
  • Judging from the tweets of regular training camp practice observers, it sounds like the defensive is really starting to click together.  It also sounds as if rookies Von Miller and Rahim Moore are impressing.  [@MaxBroncos]

The Broncos have agreed to terms with former first round selection of the Jacksonville Jaguars: Derrick Harvey.  Another Defensive End standout from the University of Florida similar to 1st round blunder Jarvis Moss, the Broncos are hoping to resurrect the Gator’s career.  Drawing equal comparisons across the two former Florida players might be unfair, Harvey did produce a little more for the Jaguars than Moss ever did with his time in Denver.  Harvey racked up 8 sacks after being selected in 2008.  Compare that to 3.5 sacks with an extra season thrown in for Moss.

However, the selection of Harvey still has to be seen as a huge disappointment for the Jaguars as a franchise.  A sentimate the Bronco front office knows all to well.  What may seem like taking a flyer on a guy that you don’t have to pay out that huge rookie contract for, Harvey could end up providing excellent depth at the position for a reasonable price.

Broncos Camp Football

Since former Denver Broncos Head Coach Josh McDaniels was fired last December, a lot of changes have gone down in Dove Valley.  The team started by bringing in John Elway as the Executive Vice President of Football Operations and hiring former Carolina Panthers Head Coach John Fox.  (And yes, this all will relate to the defensive tackle position, just keep reading.)

There’s a rumor that Elway knows something about the quarterback position and front office affairs (he was the owner of an indoor football team for a few years) and Fox knows a thing or two about defense and productive rushing attacks.  That’s good news because at the end of last season the Broncos had one of the worst defenses in the NFL and a gruesome running game.

We’re now a few months down the road and both areas appear to have vastly improved.  In the draft, the team drafted massive Miami offensive lineman Orlando Franklin to help pave running lanes and after the draft the team signed UDFA Auburn running back Mario Fannin.  The team also acquired free agent running back Willis McGahee, a player that will bring a physicality that Denver’s backfield has been missing for quite some time.

The team also brought in several tight ends, including former St. Louis RamsDaniel Fells, who is also a fullback prospect.  More blocking tight ends will result in an improved rushing attack.  Add in the fact that this is a make-or-break year for running back Knowshon Moreno, who will getting heavy competition from McGahee, and the Broncos running game has all the potential to make leaps and bounds towards dominance.  Click here to read the rest of this entry »

Thomas
Thomas will stay a Denver Bronco, for at least one more season. (AP Photo/Jack Dempsey)

Broncos defensive tackle Marcus Thomas will be returning for a fifth season in Denver.  The unrestricted free agent has just signed a one-year deal with the club, per Fox31’s Josina Anderson, who broke the story.

A former Florida Gator, Thomas was drafted by the Broncos in 2007.  His role on the defensive line steadily decreased up until last season, when the twenty-five year old took on a rotational role.  This season, it is expected Thomas will compete to become the starting defensive tackle lining up alongside Kevin Vickerson, who impressed Denver last year.

Thomas played in all sixteen games last season (starting two) and recorded 35 tackles, and a sack.  Bringing him back gives the Broncos more depth in the middle of the defensive line and a veteran presence who knows the 4-3 defense.

“We’re excited about the scheme that John Fox is running, it will give Marcus Thomas a chance to reach his potential and do what he does best which is penetrate to get up field to cause chaos in the backfield,” said Thomas’ agent, Richard Burnoski.  “He’s been the most productive defensive tackle in Denver playing in a system that didn’t fit his skill-set. Ultimately, we’ve always considered Thomas a starter, it was just important for him to be compensated as such. As always he’s excited to be a Denver Bronco.”

This is great for the status of the Broncos defensive tackle position — more on that to come later this evening.

Douglas

Douglas

The Denver Broncos announced on Sunday that the team has waived linebacker Dominic Douglas.  Entering the NFL in 2009 as an undrafted free agent with the St. Louis Rams, Douglass joined the Broncos last December and appeared in the final four games of the season.

A former Mississippi State linebacker, Douglas was one of just three players in the SEC to record at least 100 tackles his senior year of college.  Douglass will probably be signed to a team’s 90-man training camp roster in the near future.

The move comes as no surprise, Douglas was basically a fill-in special teamer last season.  Best of luck to him wherever he may land.

Fells

The Denver Broncos have agreed to terms with a pair tight ends in a matter of hours.  Former St. Louis Rams tight end Daniel Fells has signed with the club, reports ESPN’s John Clayton.  Denver now has a slew of tight ends on their roster (seven in all) and a varity of blocking and receiving prospects.

Fells is a talented tight end that instantly expands the talent level among Denver’s tight ends.  According to ProFootballFocus (PFF), Fells is really hard to bring down, causing eleven missed tackles.  Fells is also the only player in the NFL to make linebacker Takeo Spikes miss more than once in the past three seasons, per PFF.
