The Broncos have agreed to terms with former first round selection of the Jacksonville Jaguars: Derrick Harvey.  Another Defensive End standout from the University of Florida similar to 1st round blunder Jarvis Moss, the Broncos are hoping to resurrect the Gator’s career.  Drawing equal comparisons across the two former Florida players might be unfair, Harvey did produce a little more for the Jaguars than Moss ever did with his time in Denver.  Harvey racked up 8 sacks after being selected in 2008.  Compare that to 3.5 sacks with an extra season thrown in for Moss.

However, the selection of Harvey still has to be seen as a huge disappointment for the Jaguars as a franchise.  A sentimate the Bronco front office knows all to well.  What may seem like taking a flyer on a guy that you don’t have to pay out that huge rookie contract for, Harvey could end up providing excellent depth at the position for a reasonable price.

Cheap, young (24), and has potential. Fox is the DE guru so if anyone can get it out of him its Fox. With that being said he is a bust, as of now…….

I'm liking the Broncos DE situation…

  • MrEast

This dude sucks and is a waste of cap space. I'm not liking any of the signings so far. How many tight ends do you need?

  • Rcsodak

I'd rather see KGregg, THarris,or TWarren.

  • td30ismpv

Good Lord East, the cuts haven't even started yet, gotta hunch the McD TE's will be gone at the end of summer.

If you look at Fox's defense history Carolina was never bad. Mostly middle upper middle of the pack. fox took Charles Johnson a back up to peppers and made him into a probolwer a highly sought after player that signed a 6yr 72 million dollar deal. He might be bribing in low end talent but he makes it work. We all know Peppers, not many knew Johnson before this year and other than Kris jenkins can anybody other than a panther fan name another defensive lineman for the panthers during the fox era? And if you Google it it doesn't count!

No kidding, McDaniels was the worst evaluator of that position I've ever seen.  Rasario had a pretty good season in Carolina during Delhomme's last year.  He could be good depth, maybe even win the start.

This guy is cheap and nothing but upside for depth.  I like this move especially with Dumervil and Ayers coming off of injuries.

Getting several former first round talents at a low price – I like that plan.

  • MrEast

I saw him play in Jacksonville. He was awful. I have no hopes for him here either.

  • MrEast

    Will Witherspoon.

    No Google needed.

I'm glad we're not wasting money on free agents this year.  We signed plenty of big name free agents the last couple of years and where did it get us?  Even when Shanny was around we signed several big name free agents only to dwell in mediocrity.  We need to build from within and if it takes 2-3 years then so be it but there's no use mortgaging the future for overrated, overpaid free agents.

    witherspoon plays LB.

East you been real angry lately…you been drinking beers with Kerry or something?

  • dbroncs24/7

Is that kerry or east talking? apparently you want the new crown of being the most negative person that comments… and you're winning by a landslide so you can ease up

  • NMBronc-in-DC

All this for what.  Orton is still our QB = this year is over.  So sign all the projects you want, Broncos, you have one year to get them ready.

  • MWSmith

This isn't the NBA draft order doesn't mean squat. Anybody heard from Tim Crowder (Beat out by John Engelberger) or George Foster lately,  I think that trying to resurrect careers of guys that fizzled out is a futile effort. Better off signing a bunch of undrafted free agents and see who can play.

  • crazykid

For a cheap price, this is a decent signing.

I really want Jeremy Beal to make the team though, so I'm not so hot on this signing. I think the kid could be the next big thing, even though hes a 7th Rounder.

  • MrEast

I'm not negative. Derrick Harvey does suck. There defensive tackle position is looking awful. That's just the truth.

I'm not huffing and puffing. I'm voicing my opinion. I don't like that fact that there weren't any DTs drafted and I don't like signing lackluster players like Harvey.

I'm not negative because I don't think every move has “upside.”

  • MrEast

Yes he did. He played like a DT that season though.

Mike Rucker is who it is.

  • Mike

Who did he have to work with in Jax? A pair of Rookies at DT absolutely NO one on the right side in any of the past 3 years. Shoot they brought in Kampman and he only played for 8 games. Give this kid a chance with a decent counterpart with the likes of Von Doom opposite him and see what he might still have in the tank.

  • MrEast

The Jaguars were actually quite dedicated to drafting DTs for Harvey and Groves to work with.

2007 – Derick Landri, 5th Round – Sacked and picked Big Ben in the playoffs, and recovered a fumble that sealed the win. This guy was pretty good.

2009 – Terrance Knighton, 3rd Round – Was probably the best DT of the draft.

2010 – Tyson Alualu, 1st Round – Started all 16 games, notched 3.5 sacks, and was voted to the all rookie squad.

2010 – D'Anthony Smith, 2nd Round – Unfortunately spend his season on IR after an injury during training camp.

  • Mike

Landri was far from good. had a game or two here and there but good? not even close. He got pushed around constantly Stats: http://www.nfl.com/player/dere

Knighton best DT in 2009 draft? B.J. Raji much? Otherwise yes Knighton and Alualu have been productive and good grabs for Jax, but i didn't say they were bad per say just said he's been alongside rookies, which he has been.

Harvey isn't the best available DE out there but he's far from the worst and no IMO he doesn't suck. Hell he did better than Landri his rookie year, and was decently productive against the run in 2009. He's never seen eye to eye with the Jags and maybe thats part of the reason he didn't mesh well when Del Rio brought in the D-line coach that eventually benched him more on his attitude than his lack of production. Still getting him for the minimum and seeing if he gives some production isn't anything to scoff at. But that just my opinion and you have your's guess we'll just have to agree to disagree.

  • MrEast

“Knighton best DT in 2009 draft? B.J. Raji much?”

Yes, seeing how Raji sat the bench most of the year.

  • Mike

Due mainly to a moderate ankle injury he played through his entire rookie season. So your saying injuries make Raji < Knighton. Injuries happen and he was fighting through that ankle injury all year in 2009, and even through his injury prone first year the guys got more sacks and has more production when he's been on the field than Knighton so far in their first 2 years.

  • MrEast

I'm just saying that Knighton performed better than Raji in 2009. That doesn't mean I think he always does.

Back to topic on hand though, Derrick Harvey sucks because he sucks.

MrEast, first of all Derrick Harvey is an excellent player.  He was not utilized in Jacksonville to his potential.  His first season the defensive coach left and they sent in another coach that obviously didn't like the kid.  I've watched his career, and he's always been an outstanding player, do your research.  #1 in the country in high school, and part of Florida's SEC Championship.  20.5 quarterback sacks (ninth on the Gators' career record list), and 51.5 tackles for a loss (third on the Gators' career record list).  With the RIGHT leadership he is going to tear Denver up and TRUST you WILL EAT THOSE WORDS!!!!!  Thanks

  • KittyKat

MAN DO YOUR HOMEWORK, HE's going to KICK BUTT, this is a NEW BEGINNING for him! TRUST
