There will be a fresh voice calling Denver Broncos games on 850 KOA this season — former wide receiver Ed McCaffrey will join Dave Logan as a color commentator.  McCaffrey will be replacing former quarterback Brian Griese, who will see an expanded role in ESPN’s college football coverage beginning this season.

Several other Broncos will join McCaffrey in covering the team for KOA this year, press release after the jump.

The Denver Broncos were the first team to announce the firing of a head coach (Josh McDaniels, 2010) in NFL history and have fully embraced the social media movement over the past two seasons.

The Broncos have been tweeting since 2007, but their social media movement was spearheaded by John Elway in early 2011, shortly after Elway returned to the team as a football operations executive.  Since joining Twitter, Elway has announced trades, signings and cuts over the social media platform — keeping fans in the loop with instantly updated timelines.

As of July 30, there are 42 players representing the Broncos on Twitter.  Fans get a unique look into the life of NFL players on Twitter, and hear about everything from where the players eat, players losing track of what day of the week it is during camp and their workout routines.  In recent days, several players have taken to the social networking site to thank fans for all of the support during training camp. Brock Osweiler

At the start of camp, rookie quarterback Brock Osweiler was buried down the Denver Broncos depth chart, watching veterans Caleb Hanie and Adam Weber take more snaps and enjoy more opportunities in front of him as the second and third quarterbacks, respectively.

That was fine with the ASU alum. Osweiler wasn’t trying to advance up the depth chart, he was just trying to improve every day.

“There’s no goal as far as where I want to be on the depth chart,” Osweiler said. “Obviously, as a competitor, I want to be as high as I possibly can be. But my goal this year is to get better every day. I wrote down, as camp started: ‘perfect at least one thing.’ Whether that’s a certain play, it’s a run play, it’s footwork, it’s my throwing motion — get better every single day. If I do that, all those little things are going to add up. By the end of they year hopefully I’ll be ready whenever my number does get called.”

Something interesting happened as Osweiler worked on perfecting those little things every day: his opportunities increased. Quickly. By the third day of camp, he was taking snaps as the #2 QB.

The XXX Summer Olympiad kicked off on Saturday with the game’s popular Opening Ceremonies.  Over 40 million people tuned in to watch the event on NBC, but that still wasn’t more than watched Denver’s AFC Wild Card victory over Pittsburgh earlier in the year.

The numbers aren’t surprising—more people in America care about football than the Olympics, 1.7 million to be exact.  NBC could have the best of both worlds if American football became an Olympic sport, and according to NFL.com, that could be a possibility by 2024.

Meanwhile, we are in agreement with Michael Lombardi that if American football does become an Olympic sport, Denver’s Von Miller would surely make team USA.

Did you watch the Opening Ceremonies?  Will you watch the NFL’s Hall of Fame game (Arizona vs. New Orleans) on Sunday?

Ryan Clady

As it stands now, Ryan Clady is headed for free agency in 2013.

The Denver Broncos and the two-time Pro Bowl left tackle have “mutually agreed” to cease contract extension talks until after the 2012 season, The Denver Post reported Monday.

Clady is set to make $3.5 million in 2012, the final year of his rookie contract. The Broncos had reportedly hoped to extend Clady’s contract by Monday, and had offered Clady $50 million over five years to that end.

The Broncos can still place the franchise tag on Clady, which would cost them $9.6 million in 2013.

This is terrible news. Ryan Clady getting one step closer to free agency is Ryan Clady getting one step closer to leaving Denver. Pro Bowl left tackles don’t just hit the open market. They just don’t, and if Clady did, he’d be incredibly in-demand.

Clady wasn’t happy being the third-highest paid left tackle in the game (the equivalent of the Broncos’ offer), so he’s betting on himself having a phenomenal year protecting Peyton Manning and earning more money. That’s a bet I think the Broncos will regret letting Clady make. Thanks goodness for franchise tags.

On August 24th, EA Sports will release Madden NFL 13 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Vita and Wii.  Leading up to the game’s release, EA will announce the Top Ten rated players at each position.

On Monday, EA announced quarterback ratings and Denver’s Peyton Manning came in sixth with a 93 overall rating.  Interestingly, Peyton’s little brother, Eli, is ranked two spots above the elder Manning at 97 overall.

With Eli coming off a Super Bowl victory and Peyton coming off neck surgery, EA’s ratings are justifiable.  Top Ten rated quarterbacks in the popular video game after the jump.

Tracy Porter and Champ Bailey

Denver Broncos cornerbacks Tracy Porter and Champ Bailey talk during the team's training camp practice on Monday, July 30, 2012. (BroncoTalk.net photo)

The Denver Broncos continued their 2012 training camp on Monday in front of 4,271 fans and under sunny skies. Champ Bailey stole the show with some impressive pass breakups from Peyton Manning, while the offense and defense each brought new elements to the table.

ROLL CALL

Missing were safety Quinton Carter (hamstring), tackle Orlando Franklin (concussion), and defensive tackle Justin Bannan (calf). Cornerback Joshua Moore left practice with a right hamstring, while rookie Omar Bolden got “dinged”, according to Fox. Bolden finished practice.

DEFENSE BRINGS THE BLITZ

The Denver Broncos defense had yet to get their hands on that #18 jersey in training camp, but that changed today, as Manning was pressured and “sacked” on at least two occasions. Robert Ayers and Von Miller each got past their blocks to disrupt Manning in the first 11-on-11 work (Ayers was a half-step ahead). Later, Joe Mays burst through the middle of the offensive line to wrap up Manning seconds after the snap. On another play, Tracy Porter zoomed between right tackle Chris Clark and right guard Manny Ramirez to get in Manning’s face; the quarterback threw it just as Porter would have consumed the 36-year-old, an incomplete deep bomb that may have been a big gain had Manning not been rushed to throw.

Coach John Fox admitted the defense gave the offense some new looks, including blitz pacakages. “As far as starting off with dog and blitz early, especially third down, we threw some different looks at the offense,” he said.

For their part, the offense had some new looks for the defense, too. Click here to read the rest of this entry »

Earlier in the offseason, fans gave second-year linebacker Von Miller an 8.5 swag rating for his unique fashion statements.  During training camp, he’s lived up to that high rating.

Over the past two days, Miller has sported lime green and neon orange socks, respectively.

Miller is obviously just having some fun by making a fashion statement — and in camp that’s fine.  But if he tried to pull it off during the regular season, he’d be hit with a minimum $5,000 fine from NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

In 2005, former Washington Redskins running back Clinton Portis and late safety Sean Taylor were fined a combined $25,000 for uniform violations — for wearing socks and cleats that did not match the team’s official apparel.  Taylor was wearing these stripped socks.  Because they are official team apparel, the league can’t smack the Broncos for wearing similar stripped socks that make an even bolder fashion statement.

Miller has always been fashion-savvy, and was endorsed by Five Four—a personal fashion stylist company—following his rookie season.  You can view a photo gallery of Miller in Five Four apparel right here.

After a Defensive Rookie of the Year season, Miller can wear whatever he wants as long as he gets to the quarterback.  Gig ’em, Von.
