Denver Broncos blog, news and rumors

Fantasy Football is at its peak this time of year, where the most important and exciting event of the year takes place – THE DRAFT. Since it seems I’m the only fan of fantasy football who works at night (what gives anyway?), I will be missing 2 of my 3 drafts this year. Which means my fate in the fantasy football galaxy will be left to none other than the dreaded pre-set rankings list.

Today I’ll discuss what I did in a recent auto-draft, and what I’m going to do to change my fate for the better as I approach my next auto-draft in the Mile High Report Fantasy League on Tuesday night.

Now, I’ve already drafted one of my teams this way. And I actually ended up pretty ok by all accounts – I’m insanely good at RB and WR, arguably the most important spots… but I’m pretty weak at QB, TE and D/ST. My kicker is good, too… good enough to score 6 field goals against the Broncos in Week 1 last year, anyway.

Trotter to Denver rumors are swirling. Photo Courtesy

Tuesday, inside linebacker Jeremiah Trotter was released by the Philadelphia Eagles. The move reminded a lot of people of the Broncos’ decision to release Al Wilson earlier this year – a veteran leader on the field, let go for injury concerns to the dismay of the fans.

I’ve been scanning some of the forums and news outlets and I’ve noticed a trend – you may have even seen the sidebar story from Yahoo! on the BroncoTalk news feed – that the idea of Trotter heading to Denver is catching fire, and in big ways. First, the Denver Post mentioned a possible interest at the very bottom of this news article. This moved Yahoo! to post it as the article you can find to the right.

OK… speculation is speculation. But when I start hearing Broncos fans saying that Trotter was on a radio interview in Philadelphia, saying he would sign with the Broncos, and that money wasn’t an issue; jokingly saying he would look good in the orange and blue – I start to listen. According to this fan, he also said he spoke to Al Wilson and Wilson glowed about playing for the Broncos.

[John Moses Browning]
John (Moses) Browning

Denver just signed John Edward Browning — not be confused with John Moses Browning who revolutionized modern firearms. John Edward Browning is a 12 year veteran defensive lineman from Kansas City. He is listed at 6′ 5″ 297lbs and his career stats include 307 total tackles, 27.5 sacks and 3 forced fumbles.

Browning missed all of 2006 with back issues, so the question is what kind of shape is this 33 year old DE/DT in after being out of football for a year. We’ll get our first indication today as the former Chief is expected to be at Dove Valley for today’s practice.

Denver also resigned RB Cedric Cobb. With Travis Henry, Mike Bell and Andre Hall all expected to sit out this Saturday’s contest with injuries, Cobb could provide some depth to a RB corps that currently only has Cecil Sapp and Selvin Young. Since Cobb was with the team last year, he should be able to pick things up quickly and offer almost immediate aid to our depleted group of backs.

[Al Wilson]Wilson knew how to rally the crowd, and the team.

There was something about seeing #56 walk onto the field.

Fans and opponents alike knew that they were seeing something special. A team, united behind its leader. Al Wilson, #56 and team captain for nearly a decade on the Denver Broncos, showed his leadership through his performance on the field and through his vocal leadership in the locker room. Without a leader like Wilson, a team loses a piece of its identity, and a piece of its continuity.

This offseason hasn’t just seen the Broncos lose a defensive captain. There are team captains for every phase of the game – offense, defense, and special teams. For the Broncos in the past six months, the team has lost one of each.

OFFENSE – Offensively, we lost team captain Jake Plummer. Our quarterback for nearly four full seasons, Plummer was everything the Broncos had hoped for when it comes to leadership in the locker room. He had a few character-issue incidents of his own, but there’s no doubt the Broncos offense rallied around Jake. He had the unquestioned support of nearly everyone in the locker room, and when he was ultimately benched for rookie Jay Cutler, a lot of players and fans felt like Jake got a “raw deal.” While Cutler brings more to the table physically, he hasn’t led the team the way Jake did during his career in Denver.

In an effort to provide Bronco fans worldwide with the very best web-resource possible, MyDenverObsession.com and BroncoTalk.net are merging!

Kyle Montgomery has created a truly awesome website over at BroncoTalk.net. Most of you will be familiar with his site (as I have talked about it and linked to it lots of times). I am one of Kyle’s biggest fans and I think the work he’s doing is truly incredible.

This week, Kyle and I have agreed to join forces so that our readers can get BOTH of our posts with ONE feed!

To make this work, we will be migrating my posts at MyDenverObsession.com over to BroncoTalk.net. BroncoTalk.net is a well designed site with room to expand and grow, so this is a great move for both of us!

For my readers, this means that you will need to bookmarked and/or sign up for an RSS feed over at BroncoTalk.net. I understand that this may be a bit inconvenient, but in the end you’ll end up with an even better service.

As a personal note to all the friend, fans and family that have visited MDO, I want to thank you for your time and support. I started this blog as a way to chat about the Broncos and I’m just completely blown away that this little blog could generate over 10,000 hits over the last couple of months.

Thanks a million!

GO BRONCOS! :)

Two preseason games in the books, two more to go, and then it’s real football time. Are the Broncos ready? I need to see more from this team before I can be confident we’re a Championship team, and after the two preseason games I’ve watched I’m not ready to say that yet. Today I list the 10 most important things I’ve noted from our two preseason games thus far (good or bad).

10. Safeties need fine-tuning

Against San Francisco, John Lynch and Nick Ferguson left a hole in the middle of the field that left a bad taste in my mouth. They’ve been asked to do more in run support with our leaky front seven, but as good as our CBs are they still rely on the coverage of our safeties to shore up the secondary. Meanwhile, I’m excited about the prospects of Curome Cox and Hamza Abdullah and the games they have played.

9. Cutler’s Accuracy

I’m not insanely worried about this one – but I am a little bit. Did anyone else notice Cutler throwing some weird balls this past week? In Week 1 against San Fran, he threw two passes – one was a dead-on bullet to Walker, the other was a pass that just awkwardly fell short. Then, in Dallas, I didn’t see the same dead-on accuracy I was hoping to see from last year. Whether it was overthrowing a long pass or just being off-target, Cutler didn’t consistently get the ball to his man. I saw the tight ends drop a few catchable balls as well, but a few of Cutler’s passes aren’t finding their mark. I’ll chalk it up to rust for now… hope to see better stuff against the Browns.

8. Cornerbacks good as advertised

Dre Bly getting an interception was great… did you see Champ Bailey slam into Julius Jones in mid-air at the goal line? Man, I love that guy. And while I’m here – that pass interference call againt Bly was the biggest load of crap I’ve ever seen. Anyway… If our front seven can do a better job, these corners are simply unstoppable.

Preseason Power Rankings… these aren’t season predicitions, people, but how I would rank the teams based on their finish last year and the moves they made this offseason, along with the general impression of their preseason thus far. I had the Broncos higher, but after two generally poor showings in the preseason I had to move them down.

1. [Colts] Indianapolis Colts | PREVIOUS:

The Colts finished the year on top, and they start my Power Rankings that way. They are the team to beat in the NFL this year, period. Peyton Manning got the monkey off his back, and now they have to defend their title. They’ll drop from this spot once they lose a game bad enough to warrant it.

2. [Patriots] New England Patriots | PREVIOUS:

Did anyone really believe, heading into the playoffs last year, that it would be the Patriots vs. the Colts in the AFC Championship Game? I know I didn’t, but the Patriots came out and surprised a lot of people and were this close to making it back into the Super Bowl. Everyone’s favorite team this year made a lot of moves to push themselves over that edge; it’ll be interesting to see how they handle the expectations.

3. [Bears] Chicago Bears | PREVIOUS:

I never thought Rex Grossman should have been benched last year. He had barely played any regular season games up to that point in his career, and the Bears stormed into the 2006 season with both the best defense AND offense four weeks into the year. He had a few bad games, but he definitely had more good ones than bad. And he looks like he could be even better this year. The defense is still solid – I think the Bears are hungry for the Super Bowl again, and are built to get there.

4. [Chargers] San Diego Chargers | PREVIOUS:

A new coaching staff all around definitely adds questions to this talented team – and before Denver fans start crying traitor to me, I’m trying to be objective here. While I think Philip Rivers still has a lot to prove, their running game is phenomenal. One of the best offensive lines in the league; the best fullback in the league; the best backup RB; the best running back and reigning MVP – all on this team, built to be unstoppable offensively. Add in an agressive defense and a bunch of up-and-comers in the secondary and this may be the most talented team in the NFL. It’s just a matter of seeing this coaching stuff putting them in the position to succeed, and Rivers not blowing it like he did to a certain point in the playoffs last year.

(But man, do I hate ’em…)

5. [Ravens] Baltimore Ravens | PREVIOUS:

A lot of people aren’t as high on this team as I am – I think they’re probably the most underrated team in the entire NFL. While Steve McNair may be old, he’s still a Top 16 quarterback, and the Ravens defense has won it all with worse. The defense will carry this team, and with just a little bit more offense (which I think they’ll get), they won’t fall the way they did last year against the lowly Colts defense.

Greeting & Salutation.

I’m thrilled to be joining forces with BroncoTalk! I’ve been a long-time reader and admirer of this site. I think Kyle has created an awesome resource for Denver fans and I’m looking forward to moving my content over to BroncoTalk.

One of the things I love about this move is that I can finally get away from the website maintenance side of blogging, and focus more on providing passionate insight from my own (Bronco obsessed) perspective. And since ranting and raving about the Broncos was my only reason for fan blogging anyway, this makes a great deal of sense!

On a technical note, we will be working through this transition over the next week. My readers will need to migrate to BroncoTalk and eventually we’ll roll my posts, formally at www.mydenverobsession.com, into this site. During this period of change, I ask that you have some patience with us — we’ll make it as seamless as possible.

I’m looking forward to posting and commenting more in the next week.

I did well on my self-imposed internet ban from Saturday 8pm until the re-airing of the Denver/Dallas game on the NFL Network 5pm (Eastern) Sunday. It was pretty easy, all things considering, as I stayed very busy.

I worked a bit more on clearing the half-acre of woodland behind my house, went to church, took my wife and our 5-year-old foster daughter to a nice Chinese restaurant for lunch, visited a gun & craft show (don’t ask) and continued working on a chainmaille coif (for those of you in Oakland, that’s medieval armor for your head). All in all a pretty full day!

So, I was ‘all ready’ for the game Sunday evening! My wife made chilli and I promised not to jump around and shout too loudly — it is only preseason after all (and I did a pretty good job keeping it quite while the little-one slept during the 49ers game).

However, I broke my promise almost immediately after the re-broadcast started. Not more than two minutes into the game the NFL Network scrolled the following news along the bottom of the screen: DEN Travis Henry to undergo MRI on injured knee.

All that preperation and effort went to piss within two minutes of the game. Oh, well. :)

BREAKING NEWS – Sports Illustrated reports that Falcons QB Michael Vick will plead guilty to federal dog fighting charges.  The offense is punishable by up to five years in prison.

I’m out of time here, but “scum of the earth” seems to come to mind as I hear these stories… my initial reaction – I hope the NFL bans him for life.
