Denver Broncos blog, news and rumors

So I came home and fired up the DVR to watch NFL Total Access being that the Broncos were featured today.  If you haven’t already seen this series, it’s basically game by game highlights spreadout through the program for the 2007 season of whichever NFL team the show is covering on that particular day.  They also throw in a special segment directly related to the team they’re covering.  I’m not sure if it was coincidence or planned that Clinton Portis was guest anchoring on the show today.  In any case, it turned out to be useful to have our former runningback providing his insight.

Can I just start off by saying that I was actually impressed with Portis on the show?  Not that he was a complete well of knowledge on all things football, but he was defintely classy.  After the way things ended in Denver with Clinton wanting a new contract before his rookie deal was up and getting traded to the Skins for Champ, I would’ve thought he still harvested bad feelings for Denver.  This either is not the case, or he does a good job of being professional and covers it up.  While going through the first segment of games in the 07′ season, the home game against Oakland came up with Shannahan’s famoust time-out call to nullify the game winning field goal.  Rich Eisen plays it to Portis “What do you think of coach Shannahan’s call?”  Portis replies back “I think it was a great call by Mike Shannahan.  You see it being copied around the league now.”   It was this along with nothing but praise all episode for Denver.  Portis is largely viewed as a self centered type of guy by many of the Denver faithful, but just seeing the way he carried himself went a long way to changing perspective.  Sounds like the trade worked out best for all the parties involved.  Being raised by two generations of Redskins fans myself, I’m glad to see it. Smack Talk Week continues on BroncoTalk, celebrating the inefficiencies and inferior qualities of everythiing non-Broncos in the AFC West.  Remember it’s all in the name of good, clean fun, no personal attacks, and you can dish it in the comments.

Today we’re exploring why the Kansas City Chiefs suck, and there’s just oh-so many reasons.  It was hard to narrow it down to five, but I did my best.  Enjoy.

One trophy forty years ago aint so hot, either – Yesterday I made sure to rub it in to Chargers fans that their team is the only Lombardi trophy-less squad in the division.  Well, the Chiefs aren’t doing too much better, winning their only trophy in Super Bowl IV in 1969.  They haven’t even returned to the Super Bowl since.  Just shy of forty years without a Super Bowl berth… that’s a long, proud history of mediocrity right there.

Arfat Fadel

Las Vegas police have made an arrest in the robbery and beating that took place against former Denver Broncos wide receiver Javon Walker last week.  Walker was found beaten and unconscious early in the morning of Monday, June 16, 2008, with a reported estimate of $103,000 stolen in cash and jewelry.

Police said Tuesday that 30-year-old Arfat Fadel is suspected of multiple felonies including kidnapping and robbery. Fadel was arrested Friday and police were looking for a second suspect.

According to the police statement, Walker’s previous version of the story is incorrect, as most suspected. Walker willingly entered the vehicle with the two men hours before being found unconscious on a Las Vegas street.

Walker reportedly suffered a moderate concussion and significant facial injuries, including an unconfirmed fractured orbital bone.

Walker joined the Oakland Raiders this offseason, signing a lucrative six-year deal worth $55 million and $27 million in guarantees. In a team statement issued last week, the Raiders believe he should be ready for training camp in July.

Denver Broncos alternate logo unofficial

Our friend Ian has created this little diddy, a throwback to the classic “Orange D” Denver Broncos logo of yesteryear. A nice little merging of the old and the new. I like it.

The unofficial logo is featured prominently on his new Broncos blog. Thanks Ian!

It’s Smack Talk Week at BroncoTalk, celebrating the inefficiencies and inferior qualities of everything non-Broncos in the AFC West.

Just a quick reminder – this is all in the name of good, clean fun – no personal, individual attacks on each other and you can have at it in the comments.

Today I’m breaking down the San Diego Chargers, giving you five reasons – in no particular order – why they are pretty much the trash of the National Football League.  Enjoy!

Look at all the trophies – The Kansas City Chiefs, Oakland Raiders, and, more recently, the Denver Broncos all have a bit of bling to boast in their trophy cases.  The Lombardi Trophy is proudly displayed in each city, a mark of championship teams past, and proud symbol for each organization’s history.  For all the wins the San Diego Chargers have earned in the past few years, it means NOTHING – I repeat, NOTHING – compared to a hard-earned NFL Championship.

The offseason doesn’t get any deeper than this. We’re four weeks away from training camp, the first real signs of a football pulse for the 2008 season, which is still just shy of two months away from the first snap of the regular season. It can be a mind-numbing experience, waiting for football to return again.

To spice things up a bit this offseason, we’re introducing Smack Talk Week, celebrating the inefficiencies and inferior qualities of everything non-Broncos in the AFC West. Once or twice a day this week, we’ll be exploring the seemingly infinite amount of reasons why the Kansas City Chiefs, the Oakland Raiders, and the San Diego Chargers brutally suck. Pretty plain and simple.

We’d like to analogize it this way: Do you have any friends that happen to be fans of another team? Do you and your friend ever engage in mild to moderate other-team bashing around the water cooler? Of course you do! Consider this a lot like that, except with a water cooler the size of a lake and an audience of several thousand.

It’s all in the name of good clean fun, fortifying a healthy rivalry between the Broncos and their AFC West competitors. Keep it relatively clean in the comments, and you’re more than welcome to dish it out, Broncos fans or otherwise.

Of course, if you have something you’d love to add to this week, drop us a line at broncotalk@gmail.com and we’d love to post your thoughts or article. The series should run through Friday, right before Kyle heads off to his annual summer vacation for just over a week. More on that later.

We hope you enjoy Smack Talk Week… and to get things started:

Oakland, please keep leaking internal memos asking for your Head Coach to resign. We almost forgot how incompetent you really are. Thank you.

Mike Anderson

Running back Mike Anderson has always been a fan favorite since his rookie campaign.  Earning Rookie of the Year honors as a 27-year old straight from the Marine Corps., Anderson stayed with the team for years, playing any position the team needed.  His willingness to play special teams (injuring his groin during the 4th quarter of a preseason game in 2004) and fullback for most of his career in Denver after his sensational rookie campaign left a soft spot in many fans’ hearts.  His own numbers be damned – Anderson was all about whatever it took for the team.

In 2005, Anderson saw a chance to recapture that glory as tailback and did so well, rushing for over 1,000 yards and helping the Broncos reach a 13-3 record and a berth in the AFC Championship game.  He joined the Baltimore Ravens in 2006 and 2007, making little impact and seeing limited game time, before being released this offseason.  Now as a free agent, news broke late Friday that Anderson has been suspended from the NFL for a violation of the league’s substance abuse policy.  Anderson was previously suspended for 4 games in 2003 for a similar violation.

Here’s a Mile High Salute to one of my favorite, under-rated Broncos of the past decade, in what is very likely career-ending news.  Thanks for everything Mike, you’re the best, and we wish you a very happy life away from football.

This is the first in an irregular series I plan for the off-season. I want to take this space to analyze what we know now about the current team, and figure out where the real question marks are. There’s a lot of them, and these are the areas we need to watch more closely as training camp and the most wonderful time of the year, preseason finally approaches! (Yes, preseason isn’t all that great, but after 6 months I’m ready for a game, even games that don’t count! Especially with NFL Europa gone, and I just can’t make myself watch Arena ball).

Last year, the Broncos defense collapsed basically overnight, and went from being one of the top rated defenses in the league to one of the worst rated defenses in the league. There is a lot of talk out there about what happened; most of the mainstream media just sees last year’s numbers and assumes that nothing in particular has changed on defense, so they’ll see those numbers again.

But what people who don’t actually follow this team don’t seem to realize…a LOT has changed! To start with, two years ago Shanahan fired Larry Coyer in what turned out to be a somewhat questionable move. The defense collapsed near the end of the 2006 season, and Coyer ended up holding the bag there. It’s not clear that Coyer was really even at fault, but the decision was made: the team had to go in a new direction.
