The relationship between a quarterback and his quarterback coach is evidently a very important thing, just ask Jay Cutler. Cutler was very fond of his recently departed QB coach Jeremy Bates, and their relationship had to say something about his 4,526 passing yards.

To make all you Denver fans feel comfortable out there, newly hired offensive coordinator Mike McCoy understands the importance of this relationship. Jake Delhomme even helped McCoy make his decision to move to Denver easier. Delhomme talked to McCoy’s 9 year old daughter and calmed her down about the move across the country. The article states:

“According to Mike McCoy, Delhomme talked to little Olivia and put her at ease, sharing that it was hard for him to leave the New Orleans Saints in 2003, but that coming to the Panthers was one of the best decisions he’d ever made.”

If your starting QB will do that for you then that’s the type of coach every player wants to play for.

Mike McCoy has accomplished many feats throughout his 9 year tenure for the Panthers. In 2007 Carolina became the first NFL team to win one game with 4 different starting quarterbacks each. Those QB’s would be pre-injured Jake Delhomme, 45 year old Vinny Testaverde, bona fide backup Luke McCown, and undrafted rookie Matt Moore. Whether or not they single-handedly won their respective game McCoy apparently did a good enough job preparing them to win, and that’s what being a QB coach is all about.

I can’t wrap my head around why people say it’s a bad omen that Jake Delhomme is McCoy’s claim to fame. Remember that Delhomme was once a backup in NFL Europe. Click here to read the rest of this entry »

So, new Denver Broncos Head Coach, Josh McDaniels, has put together much of his core assistant coach staff. He’s hired from within, hired from our rivals and even hired a former head coach. Let’s take a look at the coaching team McDaniels has assembled…

DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR: Mike Nolan
A former Bronco LB coach that Dan Reeve’s brought in (1987-92). After that he worked as a defensive coordinator for the New York Giants, Washington Redskins, New York Jets and Baltimore Ravens. Most recently he failed to impress as the HC of the 49ers (having his best season at 7-9 and finishing 3rd in his Division). He’s a 3-4 guy, so chances are that’s where we’re heading this year.

QUESTIONS: Will the failed Head Coach work well with the up-and-coming 32 year old McDaniels? If he was really THAT good, why couldn’t he put it together as HC in San Fran? Can we acquire all the pieces we would need in order for Nolan to take us into a 3-4 defensive for the 2009 season, or will he have to wait and slowly convert?

OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR (Quarterbacks): Mike McCoy
McCoy also has Broncos experience – he was drafted out of University of Utah by Denver in 1995. After his playing days, he spent the last nine coaching with the Caroline Panthers. His claim to fame has been his work with Jake Delhomme.

QUESTIONS: How much of the offense is Mike going to run… I mean our 32 year old head coach is the offensive guru and awesome QB coach isn’t he? So, what does that leave McCoy? It will be interesting to see who’s calling plays on gameday.

Opinions… everybody has them, so here is your chance to be heard Bronco nation. What do you want to see done this offseason?

  • Who do you want in the draft?
  • Who do you want in Free Agency?
  • Who do you see in starting lineups?
  • What players should Denver kick to the curb?
  • Who should be given a shot to start at running back?
  • How is Denver going to shore up the defense?
  • What are you happy about? Mad about?
  • What do you think about the 2009 AFC West condition? What team scares you the most?
  • What player was the MVP of the 2008 Season? Offense, defense, and overall.

Don’t worry about answering all of those questions, they’re just stimulus to get the creative juices flowing. Select one, any combination, or make up your own. Well thought out comments will be selected and put into a later post (i.e. Do not just say that you would trade up to draft Aaron Curry, specify what draft pick Denver grabs, what Denver gives up to get the pick, and what impact he will make).

Simple as that Denver fans, get your thinking caps on because it is time to voice your opinion.

Josh McDaniels’ phone has probably been blowing up as of late. Between the lack of communication of his quarterback and all the hiring he’s done lately, I’m sure he hasn’t had enough time to sleep.

Im sure all Denver fans were wondering when Cutler would finally talk to McDaniels and release a statement about his hiring. Well Denver fans we are half way there. According to the Denver Post McDaniels and Cutler played phone tag for awhile before actually having a conversation. Lets hope that Cutler is as excited as McDaniels is

“We had a great conversation about where we’re going, what we’re going to do and some of the things we’ve done in New England in the past and some of the things they did here. We had a very, very lively conversation. I can’t wait to meet him.”

Another positive thing the Denver Post reports McDaniels mentioned is the importance of a growing a rapport with Cutler. Click here to read the rest of this entry »

Offensive Line

Offensive Line

As a fan who is interested in some of the more technical details of football, one that that has greatly concerned me is whether or not McJosh is going to retain or get rid of the zone blocking system.

Personally, I can’t see how we could possibly do better; the zone blocking scheme asks personnel to do a completely different job than a more traditional blocking system, with an emphasis on agility rather than on bulk. Our personnel are geared toward that.

And they’ve been very successful. Depending upon the statistics you look at, they were either the best offensive line in football or the second best last season, and that was with a rookie and a might-as-well-be a rookie on the ends. If there’s any single group on the Denver Broncos that you absolutely, positively do not want to blow up, it’s the offensive line.

During the press conference it wasn’t clear but it sounded like the zone blocking scheme might go. But McJosh turned around on that a little later:

“We use a lot of the same blocking schemes and run-game schemes that they’ve used. I know they get a lot of attention for that and it’s something you don’t look to pull the plug on unless you have something better to do. So we’re going to see.”

Now, in my eyes, I don’t see where you’re going to have something better to do, not with the personnel group we have, and why would you want to change out the personnel we have? Clady was named 2nd All-Pro, and that’s a big deal in a left tackle. And Harris got a vote for that team too. The only thing you have to worry about in the near future is how long Wiegmann can keep going.

Dear Josh McDaniels,

As you may know the sad looking man to the right is the extremely talented quarterback in Denver named Jay Cutler. Don’t let his sad face fool you, this 25 year old has an arm to be reckoned with and you should just see him fit the ball into tight spots. This QB is a leader, who is willing to take the whole game on his shoulders run game or not.

In 2008 he threw the ball 616 times on the year and completed 62.3% of them for 4,526 yards. Now you see there is a problem… he kind of likes to you know… turn the ball over… a lot. What I mean by a lot is 18 times. I saw that you took this kid who hadn’t started since high school and had him put up some pretty solid stats and going 10-5 as a starter. I know he threw the ball exactly 100 less times than Cutler but he did throw only 11 INTs and scored only 4 less TDs.

Basically what I’m saying is… please teach this gun slinging prodigy the ways of proper footwork and the checkdown. Also if you could bond with him and become best friends with him sort of like the whole Shanahan-Elway thing that would be awesome too. I mean no pressure! With all that being said I can not wait to see what you do with the staff as well as the draft. I hope to see you at training camp, making my spine tingle with your authority.

`Eia `oe to the 2008 Pro Bowl Casey Wiegmann! Pretty soon you’ll find yourself saying “Aloha au i Hawai`i!” Denver is now representing three players from their offense. I don’t know about everyone else but perhaps it will actually be fun to watch the Pro Bowl this year. Congratulations Casey I can’t wait to see #62 in shnazzy red jersey.

Press Release:

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Denver Broncos center Casey Wiegmann has been added to the AFC roster for the Pro Bowl, earning his first trip to the league’s all-star game in his 13th NFL season.

According to the Denver Post Josh McDaniels has named former San Fransisco 49ers Head Coach Mike Nolan as the defensive coordinator.  “Mike is a very good coach, he’s a good communicator and he’s been around this league for a long time, and he’s been a head coach in this league,” McDaniels said. “All those things are very valuable, and his experience on the defensive side is absolutely a value to any organization.”

Dan Reeves extended his compliments as well. “He just did a phenomenal job for me there,” Reeves said Monday of Nolan’s first stint in Denver. “He’s a great communicator. He’s been around the game all his life. His dad was about as good a defensive coach as there’s ever been in this business.”

This suit wearin’, defensive minded coach has had his fair share of successes and downfalls throughout the years. One of his unusual successes was changing the sideline wardrobe rule. Lindsay H Jones from the Denver Post wrote, Click here to read the rest of this entry »
