Denver Broncos blog, news and rumors

DEN

It’s been said often, and we’ll say it again: the Denver Broncos have a tough slate of games ahead of them.

Every team the Broncos face until December had as good a record or better than Denver in 2008 (8-8): the Cowboys, Patriots, Chargers, Ravens, Steelers, Redskins, Chargers (again), and Giants.  That’s six teams (seven games) of tough football.

Thanks to a hot start, though, the Broncos will be 3-3 at worst heading into their bye, and very possibly better. Most fans would take a 5-1 or 4-2 record at the bye any season. Let’s take a look at the next three opponents before the Broncos get a Week 7 break, and a breath of fresh air before finishing off the hell stretch. Click here to read the rest of this entry »

For those who want a more in-depth look at the numbers that drive the NFL, we strongly recommend Football Outsiders. As part of our weekly scouting reports, we’ll be taking a look at DVOA rankings to gain some perspective on the Broncos‘ upcoming opponent.

Cowboys logo

Dallas Cowboys

Passing Offense: 34.7% (11th)
Rushing Offense: 61.3% (1st)
Overall: 41.6% (2nd)
What it means: Only the New Orleans Saints can boast a more dynamic offense than the Cowboys’, and no one is running as effectively as Dallas. For some perspective, consider that the Broncos are ranked fourth in the NFL in rushing (traditional yard-based rankings here). That’s pretty good, but the Cowboys rank first, and they got there with 21 less rush attempts. That pretty much says it all. Click here to read the rest of this entry »

I saw this on ESPNews last night and thought to myself, “For ESPN, that wasn’t half bad, I hope they make that embeddable.” Ask and ye shall receive.

Our weekly perusal around the Net for water cooler fodder.

ESPN: 13th
A great start against lightweights will now be measured against a much tougher five-pack.

BroncoTalk: 8th
Glaring stat: Eddie Royal only has six receptions for 42 yards in these first three games. I know the ball has been spread around a lot, but it’s surprising to see fresh Eddie disappear. Click here to read the rest of this entry »

Kyle Orton has worn a glove on his right hand since injuring it Week 3 of the preseason. (Scott Boehm/Getty Images)

For the first time since suffering a dislocated finger in the preseason, Denver Broncos quarterback Kyle Orton was seen practicing without wearing a glove on his throwing hand Wednesday.

Since practices are only open to the media for the first ten to fifteen minutes, it’s very possible Orton put the glove back on some time later during Wednesday’s session. However, the fact that he’s testing throwing without it is encouraging.

“This is as good as it has been so far,” Orton told reporters before practice. “I think there is definitely a chance that I can play without it this week.”

Perhaps more encouraging is Orton’s omission from the team’s Wednesday injury report. The starting signal caller had been listed on every prior injury report this season, either as limited or full participation in practice. On Wednesday he wasn’t listed at all.

My power rankings are fittingly named the ‘Tentative Ten’ because every week it’s subject to check, and erratically at that.

1. New York Giants (3-0)

Yet again the Giant’s pimp slap another team. The Bucs didn’t get a first down until near the end of the third quarter. That really says more about the Tampa Bay offense than the Giant’s defense, but nonetheless the Giant’s are playing some solid D. The run defense has some holes in it but when Chris Canty and Justin Tuck come back that should help things out.

Glaring Stat: Philip Rivers has passed more in one game (436) than has been allowed by the Giant’s secondary all year (372). The Giant’s have statistically the best pass defense in the NFL.

2. New Orleans Saints (3-0)  Click here to read the rest of this entry »
