Just some quick quotes from around the web.

Matt Williamson and Denver’s drafting policies

I like how Denver has found ways to acquire picks, and it’s a good way of building a great foundation,” said Matt Williamson of Scouts Inc. “I’m just not sold on the players they have taken.”

Tim Tebow on signing his autograph

“I always think of that before I get frustrated or before I want to stop. I think, ‘You know what, if this is going to make an impact on this kid or give this kid a smile or inspire him or do something positive in his life, then it’s worth it.’ That kind of takes the frustration and the edge away.”

Mike Beacom on Demaryius Thomas‘ potential

If he lacks respect, at least the 6-foot-3, 224-pound Georgia Tech standout will have opportunity. The Broncos are in the market for a new No. 1 wide receiver, and most believe the team will try to thrust that role on Thomas as soon as he appears ready to handle it.

It’s time for part two of Prediciting Denver’s 45-Man Game Day Roster. This team it’s the defense’s turn. Another year means yet another defensive coordinator, in Don ‘Wink’ Martindale. How much of an effect will that have on roster decisions?

With many additions and subtractions from the roster already there are many questions left to be answered. Will the new veteran defensive linemen pull through? Will any of the young corners find their way onto the field? Is it time for the 2009 draft class to shine?

Andrew Mason of MaxDenver.com was kind enough to inform me that Denver carries (on average) 5.9 DLs, 7.8 LBs, 8.6 DBs and 3.0 special teamers (punter, kicker, snapper) on game day. Using those numbers, here are some predictions are who will suit the orange and blue. Click here to read the rest of this entry »

While the Broncos are negotiating with Elvis Dumervil over a long term deal, Champ Bailey has taken a back seat. Being the professional that he is though, Bailey hasn’t complained.

“If Elvis isn’t getting a new deal now, no one is,”  Bailey said. “I can wait my turn. I will play out this year the same way I always do, I’ll work hard.”

While Champ is saying all the right things, his agent, Jack Reale is taking a different approach, telling Mike Klis of the Denver Post,

“Are we disappointed the Broncos have not approached us about a contract extension? Obviously, we are. A player of Champ’s caliber deserves to have the option of an extended contract.”

For as long as recent memory serves, the Broncos have run a 4-3 defense with success, up until about two years ago. After losing key defensive players such as Al Wilson and Trever Pryce, the Broncos 4-3 defense struggled, ranking second to last in the NFL in points allowed after allowing 448 points in the 2008 season, while earning a Takeaway/Giveaway Differential of -17, ranking 31st in the League.

When Josh McDaniels was named Head Coach after the 2008 season, he inherited a hurting defense. Along with then-defensive cordinator Mike Nolan, McDaniels and the Broncos decided to make the switch to a 3-4 defense, a switch many defenses had made. It was not the first time the Broncos used a 3-4, the infamous ‘Orange Crush’ was one of the first versions of a 3-4 defense. Entering the 2010 season, 15 teams use 3-4 defensive schemes. In modern football times, a 4-3 defensive scheme has been the most popular, as it is often successful against the run. Yet, with the pass-happy movement of late, almost half of the League has switched to 3-4, which defends well against the pass. Like every other defensive formation though, the 3-4 has pros and cons. Without the proper personnel, a 3-4 can have trouble stopping the run, last season the Broncos ranked 3rd against the pass, while finishing 27th defending the pass. A lot of people (including myself) have been giving Albert Haynesworth a lot of flack for acting like a selfish and petulant child. However, there is one person close to Bronco fan’s hearts who has Haynesworth’s back throughout his selfish turmoil. That man is Al Wilson.

Yes, the same man that was the backbone of the Broncos defense for almost a decade. The connection between the two players is Tennessee football. They were never on the same team, (Wilson’s final season was 1998 and Haynesworth’s first was 1999) but if you know Volunteer football you know these guys have each other’s backs (except for Lane Kiffin). Wilson said these comments while on the radio show GoVolsExtra with Dave Hooker. Click here to read the rest of this entry »

Decomposing Denver’s Draft (3D) Vol. 1, Ep. 1

Welcome to 3D, a new series that drills into the inner workings of how the Broncos draft.

What do the ACC, SEC have in common? Within the realm of college level achievements, not much. In comparison the ACC is about as competitive as organized jazzersize. The ACC hasn’t posted a national championship team since Miami in 2001. Whereas the SEC has claimed the past four national championship winners (5 out of the last 7).

This statistic may be staggering, but it has little to say about the NFL caliber talent that comes from the Atlantic. On a post-collegiate level, these two conferences have evolved into two of the biggest pools of talent to choose from.

In all, the ACC was third this year in draft picks. The SEC led all leagues with 49 followed by the Big Ten with 34, the ACC (31), The Big 12 (30), the Pac-10 (29), the Big East (18) and the Mountain West (13).

Since 2005, the ACC and the Southeastern Conference are the only two leagues in the nation to have had 30 selections in the NFL Draft in each of the past six years.

Over the past few years the ACC and SEC have been the most dominating conferences come late April, and Josh McDaniels has seriously contributed in the past two drafts. Click here to read the rest of this entry »

That’s right everybody… Create-a-Caption is back! Every week this summer I’ll have a fresh picture up for your witty and misanthropic remarks. So of course we need to start off with a person who is well deserving of this cynicism.
