When the weight of the world seems to be bearing down on you — injuries piling up, your fans in a state of panic –  sometimes it helps to just take a deep breath, and be a little silly.

That’s a philosophy to which the Denver Broncos subscribe anyway, as the team employed hoses and buckets of water to soak the south end of the practice field before sending rookies splashing for loose footballs in the mud.  Mud Bowl II — the Broncos kicked off the tradition last year — gave the team a fun distraction from the heavy toll of recent injuries, Elvis Dumervil in particular.

After the jump, a photo gallery of Broncos rookies in all their action-packed muddy glory. As always, look for more photos from training camp on our Facebook page. Full practice report in a bit. Click here to read the rest of this entry »

Just out of Dove Valley: The Denver Broncos placed second year wide receiver Kenny McKinley and third season safety Josh Barrett on injured reserve.

McKinley went down with a knee injury and Barrett suffered a shoulder injury, both similar if not identical to the injuries the two suffered in 2009.

McKinley was expected to compete for the third spot in the Broncos rotation at wide receiver. Barrett looked to provide depth at the safety position.

A little good news:

Nose tackle Jamal Williams has passed his physical and is officially off the PUP list. Kyle will update later on whether he participated in camp.

KDVR Fox31’s Josina Anderson tweeted that Knowshon Moreno walked by her smiling on his way to work out. She followed that up with a tweet stating the D.J. Williams was heading in the same direction.

A little good news for Broncos fans.

Other notes:

The Broncos have signed two receivers Britt Davis and Patrick Carter. The team waved wide receiver Patrick Honeycutt. Davis spent last season on the New York Jets practice squad, while Carter was an undrafted free agent in 2008, picked up by the Baltimore Ravens and spent 2009 on the Seattle Seahawks practice squad. Carter becomes the second former Seahawks the Broncos have signed this week.

Elvis Dumervil

The league’s reigning sack king may not get a chance to defend his crown in 2010.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Denver Broncos outside linebacker Elvis Dumervil, who led the league with 17 sacks in 2009, suffered a torn pectoral muscle in practice Wednesday that will sideline him indefinitely. Schefter reports Elvis will be out at least four months, but could miss the entire season.

A monumental blow to the Broncos. With Ryan Clady sidelined with a knee injury, the Broncos face finishing training camp (and possibly more) without its two best, young players. But this injury is far worse in both its timing and its recovery timeline.

How does this affect the team’s plans heading into 2010? Should the Broncos make a move, via trade or free agency, to address this sudden need for a pass rusher?

Thunder and rain delayed practice for half an hour Wednesday afternoon, but the Denver Broncos still completed two hours of work on a wet field to the delight of the several hundred fans who also toughed it out.

The session was marred by more than weather; Pro Bowl linebacker Elvis Dumervil left the early portion of practice, clutching his right arm to his chest, and wouldn’t return.  Head Coach Josh McDaniels didn’t comment on Dumervil’s status afterward, and the extent of his injury isn’t known.

Otherwise the Broncos worked on team drills and red zone work, and welcomed their newest addition to practice, running back LenDale White.

Attendance: Absent: WR Kenny McKinley, S Brian Dawkins, RB Knowshon Moreno, RB Correll Buckhalter, S Josh Barrett, LB D.J. Williams, OL Dustin Fry, DT Chris Baker, TE Daniel Graham, DT Ronald Fields, LB Joe Mays, DT Jamal Williams, LB Darrell Reid, and T Ryan Clady.  Fan attendance was lessened due to the rain.

Injury Report: Nothing to report beyond Dumervil.

Elvis Dumervil

We didn’t see the event take place, but Lindsay Jones of the Denver Post just tweeted that Elvis Dumervil left practice Wednesday afternoon, walking to the locker room with the head trainer while holding his right arm tight to his chest.

Needless to say, losing Doom for any significant period of time would be a huge blow to the Broncos. We’ll keep you posted…

Former Tennessee Titans running back LenDale White

Former Tennessee Titans running back LenDale White

This is one way to address one’s lack of running back depth. Or is it?

The Denver Broncos on Wednesday announced the signing of running back LenDale White, waiving RB Kolby Smith. The move comes three days after Knowshon Moreno and Correll Buckhalter went down, and, rather than adding another running camp body to the mix, they simply switched one.

The trouble is, their new one won’t be available for game action until Week Five. White (6-1, 235), a Denver native, is suspended for the first four games of the 2010 season for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.

It’s a puzzling move considering the Broncos will more likely need to spell Moreno and Buck earlier in the season, rather than later. Not to mention this sudden change in Josh McDaniels‘ “character guy” policy. Press release after the jump.

UPDATED (8:00 PM EST)

We reported yesterday Ladell Betts was also in town today. Well, NFL Networks Jason La Contora has reported that the Broncos also made an offer to Betts, but according to La Contora, Betts decided to pursue other options.

When a star player isn’t participating in practice, it represents an opportunity for someone buried on the depth chart to step up and make a statement.  Today, rookie cornerback Perrish Cox did exactly that.

Cox started in place of Champ Bailey, who was missing from this morning’s private session, and finished practice with two interceptions and a number of pass breakups.  The rookie from Oklahoma State, who was selected by the Broncos in the 5th round (137th overall) of this year’s draft, was aggressive in his coverage, consistent in his technique, and ball-hungry when the quarterback threw his way.

“Going in with the one’s, I was nervous,” Cox said after practice. “I didn’t want to make no mistakes, and that was kind of the biggest part.  I was thinking so much.  It was kind of hurting me on the smaller things, as far as where my hip is and everything.  So getting in a few days under my belt with (the ones) has put me in a bit of a comfort mode where I’m kind of comfortable, studying my playbook as much as I can, and talking to Coach Ed (secondary coach Ed Donatell).”  Click here to read the rest of this entry »
