Analyzing player performances from the Denver Broncos‘ 20-24 loss to the New York Jets Sunday, highlighting the good and the bad.

D.J. WilliamsStud: D.J. Williams

7 Tackles, 3 Assisted Tackles, 1 Sack. D.J. had close to his best game of the season. He’s been excellent on making tackles in the middle of the field all year. Whether it be a on a halfback or tight end thinking they can outrun a linebacker on a crossing route D.J. always proves them wrong. He also had a key QB hurry yesterday as the Jets had a 3rd and long. D.J. was the late blitzer into the middle of the line, hurdling the blocker getting upended and scaring the daylights out of Sanchez in which he rushed a critical pass for an incompletion. Williams deserves his first pro-bowl nod this go around. -Josh Temple

I still can’t believe Hill did that. I don’t care if he felt a “tug,” and I don’t care if he isn’t feeling all that apologetic. Bottom line: his 46-yard penalty was the largest gain the Jets had all day. Fair or unfair, his mistake cost the Broncos the game. -Kyle Click here to read the rest of this entry »

Diyral Briggs

With the Broncos sending wide receiver Matt Willis to the IR yesterday the question became who would the Broncos select to fill his roster position.  Many speculated that it would be a defensive player to help depth on that side of the ball.  They speculated correctly as the team is promoting outside linebacker Diyral Briggs from the practice squad.

Briggs was signed to the squad earlier this season after being released by San Francisco.  He was brought onto the 49ers last season as an undrafted free agent out of Bowling Green.  He accumulated two assisted tackles in four games of work in 2009.  Don’t expect this to be just a “warm body” fill in however, Briggs has been referred to in NFL circles as a “very promising young player”.

Move on

It's time Bronco fans join the Broncos in moving on, there's plenty of football left to play. (Photo by Jonathan Daniel/Getty Images)

The 2-4 Denver Broncos could be pointing a lot of fingers and making a lot of excuses for last week’s loss and how the season has started. They’ve chosen not to.

Through the first five games of the season, the Broncos were unable to create any kind of running game. The Offensive line, however, didn’t turn around and point at Laurence Maroney, explaining to us that he dances for half an hour in the backfield then walks through the, in blocking terms, “hole.” Likewise, the Running backs weren’t complaining about the offensive line not holding their blocks long enough and creating holes to run through, and the coaches weren’t pointing out either one specifically.  As a whole, the team knew everyone had to do a better job together.

The following week against the Jets, the Broncos had their best game on the ground, rushing for nearly 150 yards. As a whole, the team was better, the backs ran harder, the line seemed to know what was going on, and the Broncos got creative, giving an end-around to Wide Receiver Eddie Royal and by using Rookie Quarterback Tim Tebow in special situations. All factors led to a better running game, and it all started by manning up and not playing the blame game.

Similarly, the Broncos are not dwelling on a pass interference call, they are not going to release J.D. Walton, they aren’t mentioning that they’ve played the toughest schedule in the NFL through the first six games, and are not throwing the season in the bag.

“I have nothing to say [about the interference call],” Safety Renaldo Hill said. Hill went on to say he was just trying to keep his balance, and has moved on from the subject. Broncos receiver Brandon Lloyd added, “Nothing was taken from us.”

If the Broncos are for real, and can really move on and put this weeks loss behind them, they have a legitimate chance at winning the division.

“I think a game like this is going to make or break our team,” said Denver Broncos Defensive End/Outside Linebacker Jarvis Moss. Jarvis also noted, “I think this team is every bit as good as we were at this time last year and even better.”

With an easier schedule down the road, what looks to be an improving running game, and an optimistic team, isn’t it time we the fans join the Broncos in growing up and stop complaining about the past and embrace the future? There’s ten games left, go get ’em Broncos.

The Denver Broncos‘ preseason darling will have to wait another year to make his mark in the regular season.

Wide receiver Matthew Willis suffered a foot injury during Sunday’s 20-24 loss to the New York Jets and will be placed on season-ending Injured Reserve, head coach Josh McDaniels said Monday.

The Broncos have great depth at wide receiver — in another season, Willis might have been a solid #3 for the Broncos. Now he can recuperate and fight for that chance next year.

The Jets were on their collective last leg as 73,951 orange-clad Broncos fans rocked INVESCO Field at Mile High Stadium like it hadn’t been rocked in years.

Then, in one heart-wrenching, jaw-dropping, curse-flinging moment — as if millions of Broncos fans cried out in terror, and were suddenly silenced — the ref’s yellow flag took the wind out of the stadium’s sails.

Safety Renaldo Hill was called for pass interference on a 4th and 6 that gave the Jets 46 yards, putting them two yards from the end zone. The next play, Ladainian Tomlinson drove in the game-sealing touchdown. The Jets went on to win in Week 6 NFL action, 24-20.

And in every way, it was a game the Broncos should have won. Click here to read the rest of this entry »

Now, Tim Tebow, offensive weapon, scorer of touchdowns.

In the first quarter of the Broncos’ Week 6 game vs. the New York Jets, Tebow took the snap from shotgun, ran right five yards and found paydirt. He’s been utilized in various packages today as Josh McDaniels has opened up the playbook, calling Tebow’s number for the first time since opening weekend.

Tebow has yet to attempt a pass.
