Each week, coaches in the NFL watch film on their upcoming opponent.  They then come up with a game plan based off what they saw on the film.  Similarly, in BT’s Film Room, I’ll watch film on the Broncos upcoming foe week-to-week and give you my thoughts on what to watch for on Sunday. This week: San Diego Chargers Edition.

Heading into week 11, the Chargers are sitting just above the Broncos in the AFC West at 4-5.  With both the Broncos and Chargers looking to get back into the playoff race, Monday’s game looks to be a good one.

The Chargers are a willing to throw on just about every down (kinda like the Broncos did, up until last Sunday).  As a result, San Diego owns the number one passing attack and is one of the topped ranked offenses in the NFL.  Leading the charge on offense is one man — the man the Broncos have talked about all week in practice:

Starting Denver Broncos outside linebacker Robert Ayers on Wednesday practiced for the first time since suffering a broken foot in Week 5 against Baltimore.

The news comes a week after the shuffled linebackers corps consisting of Mario Haggan, D.J. Williams, Joe Mays, and Jason Hunter finally seemed to get it right. Mays, although penalized twice, showed impressive intensity inside, while Haggan had a career-high three sacks from the outside linebacker position.

So now the Broncos are faced with a choice: will they start Ayers again, benching Mays and moving Haggan back inside? Do they keep things as they were last week, letting Ayers contribute in a backup role? Or do they play with the arrangement?

Jarvis Moss

After nearly four seasons in Denver — four seasons that were at times controversial, at times promising, but always ultimately disappointing — the Denver Broncos have released linebacker Jarvis Moss, head coach Josh McDaniels announced Wednesday.

Moss, the Broncos’ 2007 first round draft choice, finishes his Broncos career with 3.5 sacks in 34 games played (one start). His last sack was over two years ago — in Week 9 of 2008 against Miami, in which he registered two sacks. It was his only multi-sack game.

“Jarvis has tried to do everything we’ve asked him to,” McDaniels said. “For a number of reasons… it hasn’t been a perfect fit.”

Last Sunday, the Broncos’ rookie Quarterback Tim Tebow threw his first NFL pass, a touchdown pass to Fullback Spencer Larsen. Before that play, some Bronco fans didn’t even know who Larsen was, and many still don’t know much about him or what he is capable of. Hopefully, this article will change that.

Twenty-six years ago in Mesa Arizona, Spencer Larsen was born. Growing up, Larsen was a very talented Linebacker who won All-Region co-Defensive Most Valuable Player of the year award his Senior season while playing for Highland High School. He went on to play college football at Arizona, where he continued to win awards for his play at linebacker. After recording 131 tackles (87 solo) in 12 games (12 starts), 4 sacks, an interception, 5 deflected passes, and 3 forced fumbles his Senior collegiate year, Larsen was drafted by the Denver Broncos in the sixth round of the 2008 NFL Draft.

At the time, Larsen was a bit of a long shot to make the roster. He did however make the 53-man roster, as the 3rd string Middle Linebacker behind former Broncos Nate Webster and Niko Koutouvides. All through Training Camp his rookie season Larsen practiced as a linebacker. Then former Broncos Head Coach Mike Shanahan made a surprising move — moving Larsen to fullback. Having seen Larsen lay some big hits on Special Teams in the Pre-Season, Shanahan wanted to see how Larsen would fair as a lead blocker. Having previously waived veteran fullback Cecil Sapp, Shanahan promoted another rookie, Peyton Hillis to starter, making Larsen the #2 fullback. Though he hadn’t yet seen the field on offense or defense through the first 10 games of the season, Larsen was earning his keep on Special Teams. In 2008, he tied for third on the Broncos with nine special-teams tackles, one of which is seen after the jump: Click here to read the rest of this entry »

The NFL has named Denver Broncos quarterback Kyle Orton AFC Player of the Week for games played in Week 10, the Broncos announced.  Orton threw a career-high four touchdowns and finished with a 131.5 passer rating in the Broncos’ 49-29 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs.

It’s the second such honor in Orton’s career, who previously won after the Broncos’ Week 5 comeback victory over the New England Patriots in 2009, in which Orton orchestrated a 98-yard game-tying drive before driving the Broncos for the game-winning field goal in overtime.

It’s further validation that Orton just might be the Broncos’ quarterback of the future.

Tebow

Although he only accounted for 5 of the Broncos 442 total yards of offense in Sunday’s 49-29 thumping of the Kansas City Chiefs, Rookie Quarterback Tim Tebow is one of the finalists for the Pepsi Rookie Of The Week award on NFL.com.

Rushing twice and throwing once, Tebow scored twice in three plays – talk about efficiency!  Though his first score, a one-yard touchdown run, made the score 28-0 in the second quarter and seemingly put the game away, it was his second touchdown that we had all been waiting to see.  A pass.  It was beautifully designed play where Tebow acted as if he was going to run, then stopped and threw a 3-yard strike to Fullback Spencer Larsen.

His first pass in the NFL was completed, and went for a Touchdown.  Giving Tebow a 118.8 Quarterback Rating.

You can vote for Tebow by going to NFL.com/Rookies.
