Denver Broncos blog, news and rumors

According to National Football Post’s Aaron Wilson, LSU corner Patrick Peterson is set to meet with an array of NFL teams at the Senior Bowl, one of them being the Broncos. This would be entirely normal if he was in fact a senior. However, Peterson is a junior at LSU and has declared for the draft this year. Despite this technicality Peterson is still down in Mobile, Alabama for this year’s game. Rather than practicing and running drills, Peterson will be shaking hands with NFL coaches and general managers across the league. You got to admire the guy’s ambition.

If Peterson is selected by the Broncos at number two overall, he would the the highest corner selected since Charles Woodson (4th overall, 1998 draft) and the highest corner drafted of all time. This feat would not be at all surprising to Peterson who has said himself that one of his goals is not only to be the highest corner taken this draft, but the highest defensive player as well. Broncos

The remaining open coaching staff positions following the hire of defensive coordinator Dennis Allen Monday have been filled, the Denver Broncos announced Tuesday. Head coach John Fox has his coaching staff in place.

The Broncos have named Ron Milus as secondary coach and Richard Smith as linebackers coach, the team announced via Twitter.

Both follow Fox from Carolina. Both have experience in these positions in Denver. From the press release (full version after the jump) —

Milus enters his 12th season coaching in the NFL and 21st season overall after instructing Carolina’s secondary from 2009-10. He entered the NFL ranks with Denver, where he served as secondary coach from 2000-02, before instructing that position with Arizona (2003), the N.Y. Giants (2004-05) and St. Louis (2006-08).

Smith, a veteran of 23 NFL seasons, spent the last two years as Carolina’s linebackers coach after serving as defensive coordinator for Houston (2006-08) and Miami (2005). He begins his second coaching stint with the Broncos after guiding the club’s special teams from 1993-96 with added responsibilities of coaching the linebackers from 1993-94.

A lot of experience with this group, with Allen being the young, aggressive newcomer in charge. Love this setup. Press release on the hire of all three coaches after the jump. Click here to read the rest of this entry »

After all the waiting, Denver has finally found their new man to help resurrect the defense. According to the Denver Post, former Saints’ secondary coach Dennis Allen will be the new defensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos.

Those who know John Fox best in the NFL believed the new Broncos head coach might choose an up-and-coming assistant coach as his defensive coordinator. Fox did just that Monday, selecting New Orleans Saints secondary coach Dennis Allen as the Broncos’ sixth defensive coordinator in six years.

Dennis Allen comes from a blitz heavy, hit you in the mouth, and put you out of the game kind of defense that Gregg Williams ran down in New Orleans. The secondary in New Orleans played at the most clutch level possible last season taking down three probable hall of fame quarterbacks in three consecutive playoff games. Allen has the resume, let’s just hope we can see the results on the field.

Sixth defensive coordinator in six years, what a frightening fact. It’s hard just thinking about all the previous ones., Quirell, Lockhart, Lupin, Moody, Umbridge, and Snape… oh wait wrong blog.

After his best season in an eight year career; a season in which he accumulated nearly half of his career reception yardage Brandon Lloyd has been voted second-team All-Pro by the Associated Press.

Talk about dropping the ball guys, seriously…

Lloyd is joined as a wide receiver on the second-team by the Detroit Lions Calvin Johnson. Beating both of them out were the Indianapolis Colts Reggie Wayne and Atlanta Falcons Roddy White. Lloyd bested both of them in every single category except receptions (which is the most telling statistic of all).

Lloyd finished the season with 1,448 yards receiving on 77 receptions with a 18.8-yards per reception average, 11 touchdowns, and and unlimited amount of fantasy football owners who were smart enough to pick him up off the waiver wire at any point in the season.

Cornerback Champ Bailey was the only other Bronco to receive any All-Pro votes (2, thank you Lindsay and Woody). For a complete list of the 2011 All-Pro team check it out here.

Somewhere in a bar in Downtown Manhattan there is a large group of people anxiously awaiting your next season Brandon, so that we can do our best Jeremy Piven on Entourage impression. Say it with my guys, one last time for 2010 at the top of your lungs, “LLLLOOOOOYYYDDDD!!!!”

Denver Broncos wide receiver Brandon Lloyd was probably the brightest spot on an otherwise dark 2010 Broncos season. Broncos fans can how him they appreciate his efforts by sending their votes his way.

Lloyd is nominated for the VIZIO Top Value Performer award, nominated of players each year who outperform their contract and determined by the fans’ online vote. More below –  Click here to read the rest of this entry »

Champ Bailey

In our mind, the question that will have the biggest impact on the Denver Broncos defense in 2011 isn’t, “Who’s the next defensive coordinator?” It’s, “Will Champ Bailey be coming back?”

Hear us out. Unless one of the Broncos’ choices for defensive coordinator turns out to be a stellar hire who shines above the other candidates, the difference between Wink Martindale or Dennis Allen or someone else at the helm is negligible in my mind. John Fox, a defensive-minded head coach, will have a lot of input either way, and we’re confident in whomever he chooses.

Champ Bailey’s presence — or absence — would be profoundly felt across any scheme.

To that end, the Denver Post‘s Woody Paige drops a notable nugget in his latest mailbag:

Fox and Elway have been tap-dancing around Champ. A lot hinges on the collective bargaining agreement. But I have it on good authority that Champ, who wants to come back, will be signed to a four-year deal, think $42 million, or will be designated franchise player for next season.

Interesting note Woody. So we at BroncoTalk dug deeper. Click here to read the rest of this entry »

The Denver Broncos have hired Jeff Rodgers as special teams coordinator and Adam Gase as quarterbacks coach, head coach John Fox announced.

Rodgers follows Fox from Carolina, having served in the same role of special teams coordinator in 2010. Under Rodgers, Carolina’s special teams posted improvements in nearly every statistical category from the previous season (before Rodgers was hired).

Gase is a Broncos holdover in a new role, having served for two years as Denver’s wide receiver coach.

Like this all around. Rodgers is deserving of the hire, and keeping Gase provides continuity in Denver while allowing him to advance professionally. Press release after the jump.

It’s that time of year again, when the four strongest, hottest, and luckiest teams in the NFL are preparing to do battle to earn the right to play in that grand Game of Games, the Super Bowl.

For the fifth straight year, the Denver Broncos aren’t among them. In fact, one could fairly  say they’re as far from that stage as they’ve ever been.

Their once-upon-a-time Quarterback of the Future isn’t. He’s there. Jay Cutler, quarterback, Chicago Bears, is coming off the biggest game of his career to face an even bigger one. It’s the Quarterback Matchup of the Season, and Cutler’s Bears are 3-1/2 point home underdogs, according to Super Bowl spreads at BetUS. The Broncos’ 2006 first-round draft pick out of Vanderbilt will face his now-rival Green Bay Packers, along with preseason MVP favorite and media darling Aaron Rodgers, for the right to play in the Super Bowl.

Cutler has his doubters. Sue me, but I’m rooting for the kid. And I’m among that group of Broncos fans (perhaps a minority) that wish he had never been traded.  Click here to read the rest of this entry »

New Orleans Saints defensive backs coach Dennis Allen is the latest NFL assistant to draw interest from both the Denver Broncos and Philadelphia Eagles for each team’s open defensive coordinator position. The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports that both the Broncos and Eagles have received permission to interview Allen.

Allen, 38, has served as the Saints’ secondary coach for the last three seasons after serving as the Saints’ assistant defensive line coach in 2006-2007. Before that, he spent four years as an assistant with the Atlanta Falcons.

More on Allen:

A nine-year NFL coaching veteran, Allen brings a well-rounded base of experience to his position – with an emphasis on working with defensive backs – and a strong reputation for his teaching skills.

In 2009, the Saints’ secondary overcame injuries to both starting cornerbacks that cost them much of the second half of the season, but still posted 20 interceptions and returned five of those picks for touchdowns.

Allen’s another defensive assistant with no coordinator or playcalling experience, but an up-and-comer with a well-rounded base working with multiple positions on the defense. The Broncos appear to be doing their homework — or at least making sure they don’t miss out on anyone in which the Eagles are interested.

Orange mania has swept across Broncos Country and the cries for the team to switch back to the Orange jerseys for good are being heard by the Denver Broncos.

BroncosForums.com has even started a website petition supporting the switch.

The Denver Post’s Woody Paige noted in his column in December that the team is going to make the switch, writing:

The Broncos are planning to bring back the orange jerseys full time in 2012. (The league has to be notified of a uniform change by March, so it’s too late for 2011).

Many fans have now assumed that it is a done deal. That, however, is not necessarily the case.

“We are aware of the public support for the Broncos to re-adopt orange as a primary color,” said Broncos Executive Director of Media Relations Patrick Smyth in an email to BT.  “Orange is a big part of this team’s history. However, at this time, we are still in the exploratory stages with regard to officially making a change.”

There is no guarantee that the team will be making the switch in 2012, so it is important that as many fans as possible join the Orange Movement.  The folks at BringBackBroncosOrange.com are going to send a hard copy of the petition to the Broncos once they reach 10,000 signatures and as of January 19th, have 9,285.  Broncos owner Pat Bowlen listens when the fans speak, this is your chance to be heard!
