Jim Mora Jr., thought to be the heavy favorite to win the job, will not be the Denver Broncos‘ next defensive coordinator.

Jay Glazer of FOX Sports is reporting that Mora has decided to remove his name from both the Denver and Philadelphia job openings, saying they aren’t the “right fit right now.” Glazer reports that Mora would still like to coach but wanted to take another year off before returning.

In our book, this makes incumbent D.C. Don “Wink” Martindale and Green Bay Packers defensive line coach Mike Trgovac the most likely candidates.

Another name worth throwing out there: New York Jets defensive line coach Mark Carrier.  Carrier, a former Pro Bowl safety, made the switch from defensive backs coach to defensive line coach in 2010, reportedly with designs of expanding his resume for a defensive coordinator job.

The Broncos will have to wait to interview Trgovac or Carrier (if they were interested) until after their respective teams play in conference championship games this week.

As Lindsay Jones of the Denver Post put it, one got the sense Mora was interviewing teams as much as teams were interviewing him. With national broadcast gigs at both NFL Network and FOX, Mora was at liberty to take his time, and that’s exactly what he’s doing.  Fixing this defense will fall on someone else.

Not the worst thing that could have happend.

    What a mess..

  • Hope

    It's a sighn.

Yeah, its a sign, it means Mora wanted way more cash then Denver or Philly was offering. Dude, you got FIRED, how much do you think you're going to make as a DC? Give me a break. With sooooo many HC jobs up for grabs you never heard his name mentioned, right? The man needs a reality check.

I don't think wink has what it takes to run this defense. His play calling and lack of aggressive blitzing was just killing us last year. We need someone who can design schemes to put pressure on the QB. I know we have to have the player to execute it but I just want someone who can get the job done and wants to finish what he started

Devils advocate: They are 90% sure they have a good pick in Wink, but want to interview others to justify their decision. I can respect due diligence.

    Might be a little thin.

It's all good Ian, the head coach will be running the D anyway, we can still pick up some promising coordinator.

wink has got to go!!! i dont care if we grab carrier or trgovac, anything is better then wink. i agree with lookn. bronco fans , take this situation into account when the defence is only ranked 15 to 20 next year. dont be surperised. it's not really managments fault because its very slim pickins at DC right now yet we have to make a move soon so we can get started on planning the next season.

He's waiting for Sarkisian to get fired.

Personally I'm glad he dropped out. I never had a good feeling about him. The guy has no loyalty at all and would have jumped ship the first time a better opportunity came up. In truth how important is a DC when you have a defensive head coach? McCoy was more or less a figurehead for the OC with McD calling all the shots. I don't see this situation as being much different.
