Denver Broncos blog, news and rumors

Rumors and news website Pro Football Talk is reporting that the Broncos are One of Five teams pursuing free agent full back Vontae Leach of the Houston Texans.  Leach is arguable considered the best blocking fullback in the league by many and was a huge reason for Arian Foster’s success last season.  The other 4 teams include the Texans desperately trying to hold on to him, the Cowboys, Giants, and Ravens.  Many could argue (I being one) that Denver hasn’t had a true blocking fullback since the Howard Griffith Super Bowl days.  This is one to watch closely Bronco fans as this signing could add a huge boost to the team’s woeful back field production.

3rd Round draft selection Nate Irving (MLB, NC State) has agreed to a 4 year deal with the Denver Broncos early this afternoon.  This completes the signing of all 2011 draft picks for the organization.  Lindsay Jones with the Denver Post was stating that 3rd round choiced typically take the longest to negotiate because they’re not as “cut and dry” as early or late round picks when it comes to length of contract and compensation.  The team will be eager to get Irving on the field to have him compete with veteran Joe Mays for the starting Middle Linebacker position.

Irving (6′1″, 240 lbs.) a three year starter and team captain has played all three linebacker positions ending last season at middle linebacker. Irving survived a near fatal car accident which caused him to sit out the entire 2009 season only to come back to 110 tackles, six forced fumbles, three sacks and one interception and be named a semifinalist for the Butkus Award in 2010.

It was previously reported that free agent running back Willis McGahee had signed with the team, that has since been retracted. Although he has not officially signed yet, it appears McGahee will, he just has to wait until 4 PM (MT). With that in mind, here’s some film that may worry fellow Broncos running back Knowshon Moreno.

See film analysis and more videos after the jump.

Another year in head coach Josh McDaniels' system has quarterback Kyle Orton looking better than ever (BroncoTalk.net)

Is everyone ready for another season of Kyle Orton? Whether he starts or not, you better brace yourself for the neckbeard. The Dolphins have signed former Panther quarterback Matt Moore to a two year deal. Moore will compete with Chad Henne for the starting job.

The fact that Moore was signed in lieu of Orton means that the Dolphins were more interested in acquiring a player to compete with Henne rather than some to start over him. Orton was tempting, but in the end it was just too expensive for the Dolphins’ front office to roll the dice on.

It looks like Denver fans are going to see Orton vs. Tebow round two at training camp this year. As of now, it looks like Orton is winning.

Editorial Revision: Update – the Broncos have not signed McGahee as of yet.  They supposedly have a an agreement in place with the running back which raises a small problem…  According to league procedure on free agents released on Thursday they cannot sign with a new club until 2pm today.  So this has really become a question of  “not if, but when”.  The Eagles and Bears were caught with their same hand in this cookie jar as well.  The team’s official statement was made that the Broncos have not signed McGahee but are pursuing 4-5 free agent backs.

With all the controversy about Knowshon Moreno‘s starting status it was highly likely the Broncos were going to bring in some competition at the position. According to PFT, Denver has done just that by signing Willis McGahee.

McGahee was recently cut from the Ravens due to his high salary and decision not to renegotiate. According to Mike Florio‘s league source, McGahee’s deal is 3 years, $7.5 million, and with $3 million guaranteed.

Training camp will be very interesting at running back now that Moreno has some pretty serious competiton.

Elway Tweet on Rahim Moore

Via John Elway on Twitter the Broncos have also come to an agreement with 2nd round selection Rahim Moore.  The Safety out of UCLA was ranked at the top of the boards for his position by many in 2011.  A welcome addition to get all of the top flight rookies added to training camp early.

Moore (6′1″, 190lbs.) led the NCAA in interceptions with 10 in 2009 at just 20-years old. He was named captain of the Bruins in 2010 and continues to be regarded as a very high character prospect.

Oklahoma S Quinton Carter

Also lost in the shuffle of morning news, the Broncos have a contract in place for their other safety selection Quinton Carter out of Oklahoma.  The news was clarified as all the dust settles with rookies coming in to headquarters for signing.  The only 1st year player left to sign is Middle Linebacker Nate Irving.  An agreement for him is expected shortly.

Carter (6′1″, 208 lbs.), a 2010 All American who can play either strong or free safety he collected 88 tackles and four interceptions to finish out the year on the 2010 Jim Thorpe Watch List.

Texas A&M linebacker Von Miller

Texas A&M linebacker Von Miller

Per Lindsay Jones at the Denver Post linebacker Von Miller has reached a contract agreement with the team this afternoon.  He is currently leaving his hotel and driving to Dove Valley to sign off on the deal.  The contract is worth $21 million over 4 years which is guaranteed.  This is similar to the Bengal’s A.J. Green who has a contract which is completely guaranteed.  Due to the inner workings of the rookie pay scale for the new CBA this will most likely become the norm for 1st round selections.  We can expect to see the Texas A&M phenom in camp tomorrow morning.

Miller (6′3″, 246 lbs.) is a 22-year-old pass rush specialist who was the unanimous top linebacker prospect in the draft. Tallying over 100 tackles and 28 sacks in his junior and senior seasons, Miller continued to shoot up draft boards where Denver selected him 2nd overall.

Orton Has Yet to be Moved, Practices with First Team Offense – A deal hasn’t been reached to ship Kyle Orton to Miami.  Word is that Denver wants a 2nd or 3rd pick and the Dolphins are offering lower.  Kyle was told to report to camp and has been taking reps with the first team with Tebow and Quinn mixed in relief.  Now comes the second guessing.  It’s being said the front office will want to move the QB before tomorrow due to salary cap restrictions.  Raising the question, should Elway and company fold their hand take what they can get rather than cutting Orton outright to free up cap space?

The Team Has Started Signing Rookies Left and Right –  Last night the Broncos agreed to terms with Tight End Virgil Green on a 4 year deal.  They added the other TE, Julius Thomas and Cal Linebacker Mike Mohammad shortly thereafter. Before shutting off the lights they locked up Oklahoma Defensive End Jeremy Beal. Fast forward to this morning and the team added Middle Linebacker Nate Irving and Offensive Tackle Orlando Franklin to the roster with a pair of new contracts.  Where it gets interesting is that two of the signings are already being placed as starters on the practice field this morning according to MaxDenver.com.  Mike Mohammad was spotted at starting strong side linebacker.  Orlando Franklin has also been given the starting Right Tackle position for the moment.

Broncos and Colts Battling for DT Muir’s Services – Thank you to a few of our readers that pointed out this blog update from Jason La Canfora.  The Broncos and Rams are both interested in signing the former Indianapolis Colt Defensive Tackle Daniel Muir.  Muir started all the regular season games with Indy last season and would be a solid fill in for Denver.

Denver still in the Fold for Mebane – It’s being reported that Denver is still one of the teams being considered by Defensive Tackle Brandon Mebane.  DT is the biggest hole on the depth chart this morning so this could be a key signing if the Broncos could land the sought after veteran.  They will have to best offers from the Seahawks who are also in desperate need of interior linemen and the New Orleans Saints along with a few unnamed teams.

Renaldo Hill Missing – Safety Renaldo Hill was missing off the practice field this morning due to an “undisclosed medical issue”.  Not exactly the start you want when you need to lock down your position from two competing rookies.  Nate Jones also received a contract and was back on the field today.

Orange & Blue Chasing TE Fells – It’s not a Kevin Boss or Zach Miller signing but the Broncos are trying to get a contract on free agent tight end Daniel Fells.  Fells is a 272 beast of a TE who played in St. Louis last season.  The Cowboys are also reported to be in the mix.

Adam Schefter reported early this morning (the man never sleeps) that the Washington Redskins have traded disgruntled defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth to the New England Patriots. In return, the Redskins will be compensated with a 2013 fifth round pick.

The Patriots are expected to pick up Haynesworth’s $5 million contract without any restructuring. This move will put Haynesworth next to Pro Bowler Vince Wilfork on New England’s defensive line.

The Patriots are getting famous for picking up another team’s problem and attempting to turn it into their treasure. Randy Moss may have left on awful terms, but he set an NFL record, went to the Super Bowl, and still traded him and a seventh round pick, for a third rounder in exchange. That’s getting some bang for your buck and mostly everyone expects the Patriots to repeat that story with Haynesworth.

Some of you may question this move. Keep in mind that the Broncos are in hot pursuit of Brandon Mebane right now and his yearly salary will possibility (most likely) be more than what Haynesworth will be making with the Patriots this upcoming season.

With absolutely no one on the defensive line worth writing home about, this should have been a move Brian Xanders, John Elway, and John Fox should have been considering. Hopefully today, Denver will bring in its first free agent.

Quarterback Jake Delhomme has been released in Cleveland according to various reports.  He was due to receive $5.4 million in base salary this season so releasing the veteran with a very roller coaster career and re-signing backup Seneca Wallace was a natural decision for the Browns front office.Delhomme

Many NFL analysts have speculated on Delhomme landing in Denver as a veteran mentor for Tebow with Kyle Orton on his way out of town.   Brady Quinn can and probably will be a viable backup moving into the near future but he isn’t what we could call a veteran friend of the starter a la Mark Brunell in New York.

Jake would most likely be taking a huge pay to be a Bronco, but there isn’t likely to be much of an interest in an aging QB that can’t seem to produce consistently late in his career.  However, he could be a welcome addition at a low, near minimum salary to help Tebow and for that matter Quinn learn the intricacies of the Fox/McCoy system.  How do you feel about bringing in the awww shucks QB from Carolina Bronco fans?
