Warren

Recently cut New England Patriots defensive end Ty Warren will visit the Broncos at Dove Valley this evening, according to Mike Klis of the Denver Post.

Warren had played defensive end in the Patriots’ 3-4 defense.  Weighing in at 300 pounds, he could easily make the transition to defensive tackle in Denver’s 4-3.

Having just turned 30, Warren is entering his ninth season in the league after missing the entire 2010 season due to a hip injury.  Warren has battled injuries over the past three seasons, which may cause some red flags to go up among the Broncos brass.

From 2007-2009 Warren started in 41 games for New England, recording 140 tackles and 7.0 sacks.  His most productive season came in 2006 when he recorded 84 tackles, 7.5 sacks and a forced fumble.

Signing Warren would add a solid veteran to the interior of Denver’s defense.  No objection here.  What’s your take?

There’s more drama on the Broncos quarterback front.  According to Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald, the Dolphins may still deal for Denver quarterback Kyle Orton.

Let me follow that good news with great news: Despite numerous believable national and local reports that Miami’s attempt to trade for Denver quarterback Kyle Orton is over, I am told exactly the opposite is true.

The Dolphins have not abandoned the possibility of getting Orton despite not really making progress in negotiations Thursday and apparently walking away from talks altogether early Friday. …

This negotiation has been a poker game and everyone is holding great cards while bluffing at the same time. It seemed like the Dolphins folded early Friday. So why has no one truly walked away from the table?

It’s not over.

Salguero went on to note that the reports stating Miami was no longer interested in Orton because they had acquired quarterback Matt Moore from Carolina mean nothing.  According to the Herald, the deal is not dead.

Now we play the wait and see game, stay tuned.

Carter

Good news out of Dove Valley this morning, we could sure use some.

Rookies Von Miller and Quinton Carter were both back at practice this morning, reports Lindsay Jones of the Denver Post.  Saturday’s AM practice marks the team’s first practice in full pads this season.

Both Miller and Carter left practice early on Friday, causing concern across Broncos Country.  Broncos Head Coach John Fox quickly assured the media that neither sustained major injuries and would return soon.

Great to hear both players are fine, you can breathe again, now.

Broncos outside linebacker Wesley Woodyard has signed his restricted free agent tender and defensive tackle Ryan McBean has signed his exclusive rights tender, Denver announced on Friday evening.  Denver’s kicker, Matt Prater signed his tender earlier this afternoon.

All three players will be added to the 90-man training camp roster, but cannot practice with the team until the new league year officially begins (August 4th).  Offensive lineman Ryan Harris and defensive tackle Marcus Thomas are two other free agents Denver may try to re-sign as well.

Woodyard, at age twenty-five, is a three year veteran.  Woody started the final three games of 2010 and has been a leader on special teams since arriving in Denver in 2008.  Playing in 11 games, Woodyard recorded 37 tackles and 1 sack last year.  He is expected to compete for a linebacker position and hold on to his special teams captain’s role.

McBean, a twenty-seven year old player entering his fourth season, had a rotational role on Denver’s defensive line last season.  It is expected that he will play defensive tackle in Fox’s 4-3 defense.  Appearing in every game (starting four) last season, McBean recorded 19 tackles.  McBean will probably again compete for a rotational role on Denver’s line this season.

It’s nice to have these players out of the way, now the team needs to focus on signing a solid defensive tackle.

Miller

There was panic across Broncos Country when the news broke that Broncos rookie linebacker Von Miller and safety Quinton Carter both left practice early with injuries.  Relax, they’ll both be fine.

Carter struggled with the heat, as well as three other rookies, which is understandable in Denver’s high altitude.  Head Coach John Fox said Carter had “Heat Stress” and the rookie was given an IV.  He is expected to be back as early as tomorrow.

Miller, like Carter, was participating in his first full practice and suffered a thigh bruise.  Per Miller, he’ll be back on the field as soon as possible.

Miller tweet

Hopefully both players will be back on the field soon.  I nearly had a heart attack there for a minute.

Sadly, Mebane won't be wearing Orange and Blue this season. (Photo by Otto Greule Jr/Getty Images)

The hits keep on coming.

It appears the Kyle Orton trade has fallen through.  The Broncos didn’t accept the Dolphins offer and now Miami has moved on.  With few other teams in need of a quarterback willing to accommodate Denver’s demands, the Broncos are now stuck with Orton.  There’s a chance that they don’t mind.  Maybe that was the plan all along.  If that is the case, it makes the situation all the more frustrating.

The news comes a day after running back DeAngelo Williams, a player many Bronco Maniacs had on their wish list, re-signed with the Carolina Panthers.  On top of that, reports that running back Willis McGahee had signed surfaced earlier today but are now being retracted.  As of now, McGahee is not officially a Bronco.

Capping off a depressing day, heavily desired Seahawks defensive tackle Brandon Mebane has re-signed with Seattle.  And here’s the killer: Mebane signed a 5-year, $25 million deal — something the Broncos should have easily been able to match.

In defense of the Broncos Brass (Head Coach John Fox, Vice President of Football Operations John Elway and General Manager Brian Xanders), Denver is going through a rebuilding period.  It will take more than one offseason to fix the Broncos defense and it may not be realistic to think quarterback Tim Tebow is ready to lead the team to the Promised Land (which is Indianapolis this season).

Hopefully the Broncos still have plans to sign a solid defensive tackle.  What are your thoughts on all that’s gone down today, Broncos country?

Per Lindsay Jones, Matt Prater has signed his restricted free agent tender keeping him Denver.  Prater was easily the hottest commodity on the kicker market but teams knew the Broncos were going to pay to keep him and with a 2nd round pick coupled to that salary it was a price no other club was willing to pay.

After a shaky 1st season as the squad’s starting kicker and having to live in the newly formed shadow of Jason Elam, Prater went on to have a fantastic 2nd season and continued to improve the 3rd .  He finished his 2010 outing with an 88.9 Field Goal percentage with a long of 59.

The now veteran kicker out of Central Florida has been with the Broncos for four years prior to signing his tender this afternoon.

correll-buckhalter-in-orangePer the official team website the Broncos released three players from the 2010 campaign late Friday afternoon.  They include the veteran running back Correll Buckhalter, Tight End pickup Daniel Coats, and runningback Mike McLaughlin.  Buckhalter being the most notable of the three, his absence may be noticed in 2011 if the Broncos aren’t able to replace his 3rd down skill set.  It was Buck who was crucial in the late game drives against Houston, helping Tim Tebow instrument a 4th quarter comeback.  Correll finished that game with 42 yards rushing, 50 receiving, and 2 touchdowns, one on the ground and one through the air.

As of 2:00 PM Mountain Time, Kyle Orton became $1.5 million dollars richer. With thanks be due to Orton’s roster bonus, his bank account is looking just a little bit better today.

Since trade talks have collapsed between Miami this really looks like the nail in the coffin that keeps Orton in Denver for one more year.

Tim Tebow will have yet another NFL obstacle to clear if he wants to start this year. Orton has the experience, the relationship with the receivers, and the motivation to ensure that the starter job will be his opening day.

Think what you want about Kyle Orton, but he has handled this situation brilliantly. Orton’s confidence and maturity has only lead to him scoring a big payday and being the front runner for the quarterback position.

If Orton does indeed win the starting job, John Fox and offensive coordinator Mike McCoy‘s job will be to devise ways to get Tebow on the field. Tebow is too talented, too paid, and too hard working to simply ride the pine for the year. Now if only John Elway and Brian Xanders will sign a defensive tackle, seeing how there are none.
