Denver Broncos blog, news and rumors

If you haven’t heard, there is a new trend in the world of fantasy sports. Fantasy enthusiasts all over the country are now participating in daily and weekly fantasy leagues for cash on DraftStreet.com. We’ve partnered up with Draftstreet to do a FREE one-week fantasy league with $150 in prizes exclusively for BroncoTalk readers.

(I’m going to play, the BT Staff is going to play, and we’re going to beat all of you, just so that’s clear here and now. But the top five make money, so, yes Lloyd Christmas, I’m telling you there’s a chance.)

To build a team you get a $100,000 budget. You must fill your roster, which includes: 2 QBs, 2 RBs, 2 WRs, 1 TE, 2 FLEX and 1 Defense. Players are given a fantasy salary based on their expected fantasy performance.  This week they finally boosted up Fred Jackson’s price tag to $13,667 since he has been an absolute beast the past two weeks. On the other end, you got Rashard Mendenhall coming in at only $11,549 after a poor showing against a questionable Colts defense.

Hell, I might just take Kyle Orton, who’s a bargain at $11,427. Consider that the Green Bay Packers have allowed Drew Brees, Cam Newton and Jay Cutler to each throw for over 300 yards, and we’ll see who’s laughing in a week.

(No, Tim Tebow is not available.)

You can adjust your roster up until kickoff at 1:00pm ET on Sunday October 2nd, so go ahead and join now. At 1pm Sunday the live Scoreboard will be available to view from you Private Leagues section on the right side of the DraftStreet homepage.

A healthy Elvis Dumervil would help any defense in the NFL. Could he be ready for a trip to Lambeau?

Slaton has seen his carries drop since 2010, but has also taken on kick return duties. (Photo by Chris Graythen/Getty Images)

Last week, the Denver Broncos worked out several running backs but each back left unsigned.  Denver may want to consider giving another running back a look.

The Houston Texans on Tuesday released former 2008 third round draft pick Steve Slaton, a running back that played collegiate football at West Virginia.  As a rookie, Staton lead all rookies in rushing yards with 1,282.  Over the past two seasons however, Staton’s production has dropped and he has battled injuries.

Arian Foster became Houston’s starter in 2010 and Slaton has seen his carries drop ever since.  Three games into the 2011 season, Slaton has rushed seven times for 20 yards.

Slaton is a fast running back and would be a nice compliment to Denver’s Willis McGahee.  Denver has two other backs however in Knowshon Moreno (who is recovering from a hamstring injury) and Lance Ball, who has played well so far.

It seems unlikely that the Broncos would be willing to part ways with one of their three running backs, or have four dress on game days.  Slaton is an option however, and could provide a nice change of pace to Denver’s running style.

What’s your take? Should the Broncos give Slaton a look?

Elvis Dumervil

It’s the first return to practice in weeks for cornerback Champ Bailey and defensive tackle Marcus Thomas. Another big-named Bronco who missed game action Sunday also returned to practice: defensive end Elvis Dumervil.

All three attended the portion of practice open to the media Wednesday, the Denver Post reports. Missing practice were Eddie Royal, Julius Thomas, and Demaryius Thomas.

Hopefully this is a good sign for Sunday, because the Broncos could really, really, really, really, really use their best players on defense against Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers.

The Denver Broncos offense hasn’t done anything flashy under new coach John Fox so far this season, but much to the credit of Fox and defensive coordinator Dennis Allen, the defense has looked vastly improved.

Through the first three weeks of play, Denver’s defense is one of just two in the NFL to not allow a first quarter score, the Baltimore Ravens being the other team. It’s just the third time in the Broncos history that has happened (2002, 1989), according to Broncos Executive Director of Media Relations, Patrick Smyth.

One of the key pieces of the Broncos defense is rookie outside linebacker Von Miller, who has also placed himself in the Broncos record books.

“Broncos linebacker Von Miller is off to good start. He is the NFL’s only rookie and one-of-two players in the league (Baltimore’s Terrell Suggs) with at least 10 tackles, 2 sacks and 2 forced fumbles thus far,” tweeted Smyth on Tuesday.

The last time a Broncos defensive player recorded such numbers was in 1995, when Alfred Williams did it through the first five games of the season.

Suggs is a four time Pro Bowler and the Ravens have been known for having dominating defenses dating all the way back to when Brandon Stokley was in Baltimore (1999-2002).  Being mentioned in the same sentence as such defensive units and players is quite an accomplishment for the Broncos and Miller.

The defense looks to improve even more down the road, when starters Champ Bailey, D.J. Williams and Elvis Dumervil return, which could be sooner rather than later.  Denver’s defense will have to keep up their impressive play this week if they’re going to have a chance against the Green Bay Packers.

Miller has looked better each week.  The kid has a bright future in this league.

Good news on the injury front this week in Dove Valley.  Three centerpieces of the Denver Broncos defense are expected to be back at practice tomorrow — Wednesday –  and possibly ready to go on Sunday at Lambeau Field.

Perennial Pro Bowl cornerback Champ Bailey (hamstring) is “iffy” for Sunday’s game against the defending Super Bowl Champion Green Bay Packers, reports Mike Klis of the Denver Post. While linebacker D.J. Williams and defensive end Elvis Dumervil should be ready to go after being close to playing last week.

Defensive tackle Marcus Thomas (groin) is also expected to be back at practice, but is questionable at best to play on Sunday.  Offensive weapons Julius Thomas (high ankle sprain), Demaryius Thomas (finger) and Eddie Royal (groin) should all be back by the team’s week seven match against the Miami Dolphins following Denver’s bye week.

Running back Knowshon Moreno (hamstring) is also expected to be back this week.  Moreno could have played Sunday but the coaching staff decided not to rush his recovery.

The Broncos defense couldn’t have picked a better time to get back to full strength. The Packers offense will prove to be a formidable foe for Denver’s improving defense.

Heading into the fourth week of the season, the Denver Broncos find themselves near the bottom of the AFC West at 1-2 and one of the teams in the Andrew Luck Sweepstakes.  Each of the Broncos first three games of the season has been decided by a field goal or less, and that was Denver’s “easy part” of the schedule.

Looking down the road, things look bleak in Denver.  Next up on the team’s 2011 schedule: a trip to Green Bay to take on the defending Super Bowl Champion Packers before returning home to take on the high powered San Diego Chargers.

The Broncos will then head into their bye week before traveling to Miami to play the Dolphins in week seven.  There’s a possibility that Denver will come out of the bye at 1-4, with games against the 3-0 Detroit Lions, Oakland Raiders, New York Jets, Chargers, Chicago Bears, New England Patriots and the undefeated Buffalo Bills still down the road.

The Denver Broncos (1-2) are currently in third place in the AFC West, behind the San Diego Chargers (2-1) and Oakland Raiders (2-1). Denver is ranked only above the winless Kansas City Chiefs (0-3).

Denver is tied with San Diego for the second-best net points (-4), behind Oakland (+10) and ahead of Kansas City (-82).  The Broncos have scored the third most touchdowns (7), behind Oakland (11), San Diego (8) and Kansas City (3). Though it is early in the season, similar division standings are to be expected throughout the year.

Defensive Rankings:

Denver’s defense has allowed the 16th-best yards-per-game average (334.7), allowing the 13th-best passing yards per game average (234.7) and the 14th-best rushing yards per game average (100). Denver has only allowed 3.7 yards per rush through the first three weeks of the season which is tied for eighth best.  The Broncos defense has faced three potent running backs in Darren McFadden, Cedric Benson and Chris Johnson in three consecutive weeks and has improved against each back. Denver has allowed 20.7 points per game, which is the 14th best in the league. Click here to read the rest of this entry »
