Denver Broncos blog, news and rumors

Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford and Denver Broncos running back Knowshon Moreno were Bulldog teammates at the University of Georgia before entering the NFL.

 Long time no see, Buddy.

When the Detroit Lions take on the Denver Broncos at Sports Authority Field at Mile High this weekend, it will be a reunion of such for many players.

Broncos receiver Demaryius Thomas played with Detroit’s Calvin Johnson at Georgia Tech; the two are still good friends to this day.  Thomas noted that he and Johnson had talked as recently as last night.

Denver running back Knowshon Moreno and Detroit quarterback Matthew Stafford were Georgia’s top recruits in 2006 and played together for three seasons before both entering the NFL Draft in 2009.

Lions cornerback Alphonso Smith and tight end Tony Scheffler once played for the Broncos, before being traded in the 2009 and 2010 respective seasons.  About twenty players remain on the Broncos roster from the 2009 team that Smith and Scheffler played on during their time in Denver.

Broncos defensive end Jason Hunter played in Detroit for one season (2009) and Broncos cornerback Andre’ Goodman was drafted by the Lions in the third round of the 2002 NFL Draft.  Goodman played for Detroit from 2002-2005 before joining the Miami Dolphins in Miami for three more seasons.  Since joining the Broncos in 2009, Goodman has started in 30 games and recorded five interceptions, one sack, and defended 26 passes.

Hunter spent time in Green Bay with Lions defensive tackle Corey Williams.  In all, over twenty Broncos players crossed paths with Lions players either at the collegiate or professional level.

Kickoff is scheduled for 2:05 p.m. (MT) on Sunday afternoon.  The game will be broadcast on Fox.

Even Broncos rookie linebacker Von Miller was "Tebowing" on Thursday, tweeting this picture. (Image courtesy of @MillerLite40)

Earlier today, Monty posted in the Daily Links about the new “Tebowing” craze.  Since then, the movement has gone viral.

Per Lindsay Jones of the Denver Post, the website, starting by Jared Kleinstei, has had over half a million hits — and counting.

“Love him or hate him, but Tebow fever is contagious,” Kleinstein said. “It’s a lot of fun, and that’s why this worked so well.”

I wasn’t sure what to make of “Tebowing,” it seems as if half of the people doing it are mocking Tebow and prayer.  But Kleinstein says that is not the case.

“Kleinstein said the initial picture and the subsequent blog and website were truly meant as a tribute to Tebow. He understands it could be viewed by some as mocking the quarterback, but that was certainly not the intent.”

Even quarterback Tim Tebow himself chimed in and endorsed it:

As Thursday went on, just about everyone started “Tebowing,” even former Broncos offensive guard and current ESPN annalist Mark Schlereth got into the action.

What’s your take on “Tebowing”?  Have you done it today?  Will you do it?

The Broncos have athletic players on offense that successfully ran option plays in high school and college. (Images courtesy of Aaron Daye/The Gainesville Sun and Marvin Gentry/US Presswire)

The quarterback option is one of the most popular and successful plays in collegiate football.  So why are Pro teams so afraid to run it?

I’m no expert when it comes to play calling or how NFL coaches think, so bear with me.  I assume that the reason NFL teams rarely (if ever) run the option is because (a) the league has become a passing league and teams do not have the personnel to run the play, (b) most coaches are fairly conservative and the option is a somewhat risky play and (c) NFL defenses would ultimately find a way to shut down the play (which is what happened to the Wild Cat).

The Denver Broncos have the weapons on offense to run the play, so why not give it a try, just once or twice a game.  I know coach John Fox and offensive coordinator Mike McCoy are often accused of being ultra-conservative, but surely they must have some creativity locked away inside their football minds.

It’s time to get creative.  We all know second year quarterback Tim Tebow is not a pocket passer and is more productive on the ground.  And we all know that third year running back Knowshon Moreno is more productive in the open field than he is running between the tackles.

So here’s a suggestion to the Broncos: Get creative, open up the playbook and call plays that fit your player’s strengths instead of exposing their weaknesses. Click here to read the rest of this entry »

With starting running back Willis McGahee due to miss at least this week with a fractured hand, the Denver Broncos are left with just two backs on the active roster.

Third year running backs Knowshon Moreno and Lance Ball are expected to carry the load on Sunday against the Detroit Lions, but the team is looking for a third active back.

According to multiple reports, the Broncos worked out running backs Xavier Omon and Tyrell Sutton on Tuesday at the team’s facility in Dove Valley.  Denver hasn’t signed either of the two backs yet; a more likely scenario would be activating Jeremiah Johnson off of the practice squad.

Omon (5-11, 227 pounds), played under Broncos current running backs coach Eric Studesville in Buffalo from 2008-2009 and has since bounced around the league on practice squad units.  Active for seven games during his career, Omon has rushed 11 times for 27 yards.

Sutton (5-8, 213 pounds) played under Broncos current head coach John Fox in Carolina from 2009-2010.  He’s been active for sixteen games in his career and has rushed for 139 yards on 25 attempts.

Johnson (5-9, 210 pounds) has been active in one game for Denver this season but has yet to carry the ball in a regular season game.  Johnson was signed by the Houston Texans as an undrafted free agent in 2009 before going to play for the practice squads of the Washington Redskins, Carolina Panthers (with Fox) and finally the Broncos.  Johnson had an impressive preseason in August.

Expect the Broncos to sign or activate one of the three backs mentioned above by Saturday afternoon prior to Sunday’s game.

When the Denver Broncos host the Detroit Lions this Sunday, the club will be wearing their alternate orange jerseys for the third and final time this year.

Starting next season, the Broncos will make their alternate orange uniforms their primary home jersey color.  The team will wear orange in six of their regular season home games in 2012 and blue will become the alternate color for the other two games.

Orange was the team’s primary color from the 1962 through 1996 seasons.  When the team changed colors in 1997, the team won Super Bowl XXXII.

The Broncos are asking fans planning to attend the game to come in orange.  Fox’s Dick Stockton (play-by-play) and former Broncos safety John Lynch (color commentary) will call the game with Jaime Maggio reporting from the sidelines.

Denver owns a 6-4 all-time record against Detroit in the regular-season, including a 3-1 mark at home.  The two teams haven’t faced each other since 2007, when the Lions embarrassed the Broncos in Detroit (44-7).

Orange and Blue, Baby!  Game day is just four days away.  See you on Orange Sunday!

Voting for the 2012 AFC/NFC All Star game started on Tuesday afternoon across the country.  Fans can begin voting for their favorite NFL players at NFL.com/ProBowl.

Fan voting accounts for one third of the results, as the coaches and players place the other two thirds of the votes.  The 2012 Pro Bowl will be played  on Sunday, January 29th, 2012 at Aloha Stadium, in Honolulu, Hawaii.

For the Denver Broncos, rookie linebacker Von Miller and punter Britton Colquitt appear to have the best chances of reaching Hawaii.  Miller owns the second most sacks by an AFC outside linebacker this season, just one sack behind Pittsburgh’s LaMarr Woodley (7).

Entering his third season as the Broncos punter, Colquitt owns the fourth-best net yards in the AFC (1,371), the fifth-best long (65), the third-best average (50.0), and the best net average in the AFC (43.0).  Colquitt has also landed nine punts inside the 20-yard line and owns the tenth-best return yards allowed (184 yards, minimum 30 punts).

The Broncos currently have five Pro Bowl players on the roster.  Cornerback Champ Bailey has gone to ten Pro Bowls, more than any other cornerback in the history of the game.  Safety Brian Dawkins has earned eight selections while offensive tackle Ryan Clady, Elvis Dumervil and running back Willis McGahee have each had the honor once (Clady and Dumervil in 2009 and McGahee in 2007).

Last year, Bailey and former Broncos receiver Brandon Lloyd represented the team in the All Star game.

Voting is now open.  Cast your 2012 Pro Bowl Ballot at NFL.com!
