Denver Broncos blog, news and rumors

Over the past decade, no position has been more troublesome for the Denver Broncos than defensive tackle.

Through the years the Broncos have tried to bring players to fill that void and have failed miserably at it. Free agents Gerard Warren, Sam Adams, Dewayne Robertson, and Jamal Williams have all been busts. Drafted players Marcus Thomas and Monsanto Pope have never been able to make an impact. Ty Warren was picked up and never even made it on the field last season.

Broncos fans need to ask the question: Where is the next Trevor Pryce?

Pryce was a first round pick of the Broncos in the 1997 draft. The team was coming off terrible playoff loss to Jacksonville where the Wild-Card Jaguars ran for 203 yards against a stunned Denver defense. The No. 1 seed Broncos were knocked out before you could blink.

NFL Draft: Breaking Down the “Cover 2” Safety | National Football Post
Playing Cover 2 (or Tampa 2) at the safety position is all about reading releases and stems of the WR. Drop to your landmark, play with depth and drive downhill on the throw. And as we continue to work towards the NFL Draft, I want to look at two routes (fade, corner) that every safety prospect will have to defend in deep half if they want to see valuable minutes on Sundays.

Things have slowed down in Dove Valley and it has been quiet on the free agency front, but the team may not be done bringing in players.  On Monday, Denver Broncos General Manager Brian Xanders said “we’re not done” signing free agents — yet.

Since then, the team has re-signed exclusive rights free agent punter Britton Colquitt and have been courting defensive tackles Marcus Thomas (6-3, 316), Justin Bannan (6-3, 312) and Amobi Okoye (6-2, 292).  The team is obviously trying to fill a gaping hole at the DT position on the roster.

Thomas, who says he’ll sign with Denver “whenever they call me“, is presumably playing the waiting game with Denver’s front office.  The Broncos say they want Thomas to come back and he says he wants to come back.  So what’s the hold up?

Most likely the money is slowing down contract talks.  Denver probably made Thomas an offer that he didn’t feel it “implied that the team appreciated him and wanted him to return,” as Thomas’ agent would probably say.  So now, both sides play the waiting game.   Click here to read the rest of this entry »

(Editor’s note: The following is a tryout piece for the BT Staff by Chris Schmaedeke.)

Peyton Manning signed a 5-year deal with the Broncos, but the team knows he can’t play forever.

The Broncos signed former CSU standout Caleb Hanie to back up Manning next season, but after his showing in Chicago is probably not the long term answer after Manning.

So, what do the Broncos do?

They have a hall of fame quarterback on their roster which makes it the perfect chance to draft and develop. The Broncos have no chance at the Stanford’s Andrew Luck, Baylor’s RGIII or even Texax A&M’s Ryan Tannehill, but Denver could score get some great value with a QB in the later rounds.

“We’ve got to do everything in the world to make sure we kill Frank Gore‘s head,” Gregg Williams is heard in the expletive-laced recording below. “We want him running sideways. We want his head sideways.”

Does something along these lines occur in every single locker room in the NFL? Yes, we think so. Does it usually get recorded and sent to the NFL’s office? No.

Word is this recording took place months into the NFL’s investigation, in which the NFL had already insisted the New Orleans Saints stop such conduct. So much for your respective appeals, Saints coaches.

When Can You Start? by Tony Villiotti | Draft Metrics
In past articles, DRAFTMETRICS has presented information regarding the robability of draftees becoming starters. A five-year starter, then, is a player who started at least eight games in a season at least five times.

Last years first-round pick Von Miller is helping change the image of the Broncos defense.

With the addition of Peyton Manning, the Broncos are now considered to be the front runners in the AFC West, and likely to repeat as division champions for the 2012 season.  Acquiring safety Mike Adams and cornerback Tracy Porter add starting potential in the secondary, while the signings of wide receiver Andre Caldwell, tight ends Joel Dressen and former Manning target Jacob Tamme give the Broncos depth and versatility in the passing game.

Undoubtedly, these free agent moves have improved the Broncos roster moving forward, but if they are serious about their “win now” manta, they have some serious work to do before the season rolls around.

The Denver Broncos on Wednesday re-signed exclusive rights free agent punter Britton Colquitt, according to ESPN‘s Adam Schefter.  Terms of the one-year deal are not yet known.

Colquitt, 27, is entering his fourth season with the team.  In 2011, Colquitt emerged as one of the more reliable punters in the league.

Colquitt (6-3, 205 pounds), punted 101 times in 2011 (2nd) for 4,783 yards (1st) and 4,058 net yards (1st).  Averaging 47.4 yards a punt (8th), Colquitt’s net punt average was 40.2 yards (9th).  His 33 punts landing inside the twenty-yard line ranked 2nd and his long of 66 yards ranked 12th overall last season.

Though he was an effective tool for Denver’s special teams — often pinning teams deep in their own territory — the Broncos, and Colquitt, hope his right leg sees less action this fall.  When quarterback Peyton Manning signed with the team last month, Colquitt “told him to help rest my leg a little this year,” according told CBS4‘s Vic Lombardi.

Last season, the Denver Broncos converted only 30.8% of their third down plays for first downs (20th overall).  During Manning’s final season starting in Indianapolis (2010), the Colts converted 44.6% of their third down attempts, which ranked first overall in the NFL.

Since 2002, the Colts have ranked in the 10 top in 3rd down conversion every year, leading the category from 2005-2009.  During the Colts’ 2006 Super Bowl run, the team converted 56.2% of their third down plays.

With Manning now in Denver, the team is hoping to not have to punt as often. When they do have to punt, they have a punter in Colquitt who can boot it — which is a nice scenario for Offensive Coordinator Mike McCoy.

Colquitt was impressive last season and was close to getting a Pro Bowl nod. Denver was wise to bring him back for the 2012 season.
