It looks like Ty Warren won’t be cut or retire — the veteran defensive tackle agreed on a restructured contract with the Denver Broncos on Wednesday, the team announced.

“Ultimately we met in a middle ground and got the deal done,” Warren said.

Details of the contract – including its length and compensation — are not yet known.  Today was Warren’s first time practicing with the team since being placed on injured reserve with a triceps injury prior to the 2011 season.

Warren met with the media on Wednesday and admitted that felt bad about missing all of last season and being compensated for it, “I do have a conscience,” he said. Click here to read the rest of this entry »

Mays Could Be Biggest Beneficiary of Larger DTs | MaxDenver.com
The Broncos aren’t getting bigger at the defensive tackle spots for the sake of adding bulk. They’re getting bigger to make life easier for the players around them — the ends to their flanks and the linebackers behind them.

Quarterback Peyton Manning #18 of the Denver Broncos talks to the local and national media following organized team activities at Dove Valley on May 21, 2012 in Englewood, Colorado. (Justin Edmonds/Getty Images)

Apologies for being AWOL lately — I did a bit of roadtripping to catch the Colorado Rockies kick the Arizona Diamondbacks‘ trash 4-0 last night. Since I’m staying in Phoenix all week to catch Games 2 and 3 as well, I’ve been away from the blog a bit. But let’s talk some Denver Broncos

Coachspeek has always fascinated me. It’s often impossible to glean anything useful when the coach (or player) has that filter on. So normally I, like many of you, take most professional sports figures’ comments with a grain of salt. You’re more committed than ever to winning a championship, superstar athlete? Well isn’t that special.

For me, that’s not the case with John Fox‘s recent evaluation of Peyton Manning. Maybe I’ve got Offseason Fever, but I’m taking Fox’s praise of Manning literally. I think the guy is rehabbed and ready to shine.

“I think he’s doing tremendous,” Fox told the media Monday. “Physically, he looks the same to me as he’s always looked.”

The same as he’s always looked. In other words, ready to take a shot at a fifth League MVP title. Ready to lead the Broncos into real relevance, and the Super Bowl conversation.

Indeed, the MSM echoes Fox’s sentiments. The reports from Monday were droolinducing. Click here to read the rest of this entry »

John Elway surrounds Broncos with “winners” in front office | Denver Post
Walk through the upstairs offices at Broncos headquarters and it’s usually remarkably quiet. Administrative assistants silently, but busily, attend to the details of the men they work for. The men spend hours burrowed inside offices watching film of players or making phone calls regarding personnel issues.

Top six teams to watch for this upcoming season | NFL Evidence Network
Everything in Denver will revolve around what Peyton Manning does. He was the biggest signing this offseason and possibly in NFL history. Manning has taught the receivers in Denver things they never knew, and a former Bronco who helped in acquiring Manning and just signed with the team, Brandon Stokley, will be helping the receivers too.

Von Miller not satisfied with 2011, even though he was defensive ROY | Denver Post
There are many people who earn their living in the NFL who are quick to say what kind of impact player Von Miller can be. And yet Miller, with lofty goals tucked in his pockets, is just as quick to say what kind of player he doesn’t want to be.

Denver Broncos Super Bowl XXXII Ring

The funny thing about this review is that I’ll be using the same photo from the offensive list. Super Bowl XXXII was simply an incredible moment in Denver Broncos history, especially for us fans. It wasn’t just a 38 year wait, but four Super Bowl losses – each more embarrassing than the previous. A view around the league that the Broncos were simply a joke, which was evident to the laughable 14 point spread between a 13-3 team and a 12-4 team. If one were unbiased, they’d instantly realize the two teams were evenly matched, but its hard to let go of one’s preconceived notions and the one’s prevalent of the Broncos in the early to mid 90’s was one of contempt. All of this only fed into the pure greatness of this singular moment in Broncos history, which is why two of my #1 spots occurred during this game.

Matt Prater celebrates

The Denver Broncos‘ first mandatory mini-camp is less than two weeks away, meaning the clock is ticking for Matt Prater‘s decision: to hold out, or not to hold out.

Maybe he won’t have to decide at all. Klis reports

The Broncos have made progress in recent days with Prater on a five-year deal. The team tendered him a 2012 salary of $2.6 million through the franchise tag. Both sides hope a long-term deal is reached in time for Prater to join the Broncos at their mandatory minicamp June 12-14.

The Broncos and Prater were reportedly “far apart” on contract negotiations a few weeks ago, so this is an encouraging development. With five game-winning or game-tying field goals last year alone, the Broncos want to lean on Prater’s leg for the next five years, should the need arise.

There is a misconception among many fans and pundits that the Denver Broncos won’t run the ball in 2012 — and if they do, it will be rarely, and even more rarely will a fullback be utilized. Denver’s offseason acquisitions suggest otherwise.

To help grasp the Broncos’ commitment to the run, consider the history of Head Coach John Fox and Offensive Coordinator Mike McCoy.  The two coaches spent six years together coaching the Carolina Panthers and their offenses consistently ranked among the top ten rushing attacks in the league during that time.

From 2002-2010, Carolina offenses led by Fox and McCoy averaged 1,917 rushing yards a season and produced four individual 1,000-yard rushers.  Last season, Denver’s offense led the league with 2,632 rushing yards and produced another 1,000-yard rusher, Willis McGahee.

The duo of Fox and McCoy has seen success on the ground while using two main running backs and a reliable fullback. Click here to read the rest of this entry »

Ben Garland

Name: Ben Garland
Pos: Defensive Lineman
Ht, Wt: 6’5″, 275*
Age: 24
Exp: 1
College: Air Force
*Reports have Garland at 305

Ben Garland was an undrafted rookie for the Denver Broncos in 2010, a nose guard at Air Force the Broncos saw as a defensive end in their 3-4 defense. I can distinctly remember scouting Garland in training camp that year and coming away impressed, and disappointed that he didn’t make the team. Few will work harder to be a Bronco than Ben Garland.

Wolfe, Siliga, Garland

Denver Broncos top draft pick Derek Wolfe won’t be solely relegated to the defensive tackle position his rookie season. In fact, he could see more time at defensive end than DT, reports the Denver Post.

“(Wolfe’s) not a big tackle right now,” defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio said. “So right now his body type is probably more of a base end that can slide inside (in the nickel). We’ll play him at both spots.”

Wolfe is listed by the Broncos at 300 lbs., and only two defensive linemen are listed at a higher weight, so Del Rio’s comments are curious. The defensive ends on the roster all fall in the 260-275 lbs. range. The defensive tackles all sit right around 300. Why would Wolfe be considered undersized?
