Remind me to never get on Joe May‘s bad side.  Otherwise, I could end up looking like the Chiefs’ Tony Moeaki.

Chiseled Broncos’ middle linebacker Joe Mays has a 250-pound frame and the reputation of being a “thumper,” entering his third season in Denver, and he has a message for the rest of the NFL.

“We’re going to be a lot more aggressive this season,” Mays told media members after practice at Dove Valley on Thursday.  “We all remember the Orange Crush defense from back in the day, we’re going to try and become that.”

Mays doesn’t have to improve much when it comes to being able to crush an opponent, but the defense as a whole has to improve if they’re going to emulate Denver’s dominating 1970s-through-early-1980s defense that led the team to Super Bowl XII in 1977.

The Denver Broncos concluded their final session of a four-day offseason minicamp on Thursday.  Here are some quick hits on today’s events:

Participation report — Offensive guard Chris Kuper (ankle) and tight end Julius Thomas (ankle) did not practice and kicker Matt Prater (seeking a new contract) was not present.

Fox expects Prater back by July 26th — Coach John Fox said after practice on Thursday that he expects Prater will be signed by training camp, which is expected to begin on July 26th.  The Broncos and Prater are reportedly negotiating a five-year deal.  Fox also expects players to show up to training camp in excellent physical condition.

With the conclusion of 2012 Mini-Camp and OTA’s today, Denver Broncos players have six weeks off. Six glorious weeks of summer vacation, rehabbing, relaxing, and travelling (and absolutely, positively no D.U.I.’s, D.J. Williams). They won’t return to Dove Valley until training camp reportedly begins on July 25, and then the real work begins.

Players should make the most of this time off, right?

Not so fast, says Broncos coach John Fox.

“We have high expectations, and [we want them] to come back in the best shape of their life,” Fox said after practice Thursday. “You know, they’ve worked very hard during this offseason [and we told them] not to lose that over this little break before we start the real race.”

The real race is, of course, the Broncos’ quest for a Lombardi trophy, something they haven’t realistically set their sights upon in four seasons. The addition of Peyton Manning changes all that.

But the Broncos know Manning may only have two or three more healthy years left in this league. John Fox’s message is for his Broncos players not to blow this opportunity. Click here to read the rest of this entry »

Champ Bailey

A lot has been said of Peyton Manning shaking off the rust in his 14th year in the league, but there’s another future Hall of Famer on the Denver Broncos roster who’s aiming to defy the laws of time and physics.

“I am still as good as I was when I was 22 or 23,” (Champ) Bailey said during a break between practices here during the team’s minicamp. “I can’t run as fast as I did then or jump as high. But I am smarter. I know how to take care of my body better. I know how to anticipate things a little better. I understand football a lot better, which keeps me on top of my game.”

Bailey goes on to claim he’s as fast as anyone in the league, which prompted the author to ask Bailey if he could run a 4.3 40-time.

“Not right now,” Bailey said after practice. “I’m tired. But if somebody told me I had to run a 40 in two weeks, I’d run a 4.3.”

The Broncos have two perennial Pro Bowlers entering their 14th year in the league in 2012. While all the hype surrounds Manning, fans and opponents would do well not to forget about the veteran lining up on the other side of the football field.

The times, they are-a-changin’… as they so often do.

A few of you have noticed some recent changes in our comments system. After several of you emailed or commented on the change, we thought it worthwhile to discuss our decision to move to this new comments format with all of you. After all, it’s your blog too.

We made two changes to the comments system at BroncoTalk within the last few weeks. The first was requiring user logins. The second was a move to a new system, called Disqus 2012 (pronounced “Discuss”). Some of you don’t like one or more of these changes, which is to be expected of any change, but we hope the video below will encourage you to take the plunge. We’ve been using Disqus for a couple of years now and really like their newest version; we think Disqus 2012 takes the platform to an entirely higher level, and gives us a lot more options as far as the BT community is concerned.

After the video and the jump, we’ll break down how to comment, why login is required, and some of our favorite tips.

The Denver Broncos concluded their second session of a four-day offseason minicamp on Wednesday.  Here are some quick hits on today’s events:

Attendance report — For the second consecutive day, kicker Matt Prater was the sole player absent, holding out in hopes of receiving a long-term contract.  The Broncos had offered Prater a one-year tender worth about $2.5 million, but Prater and his agent are hoping to hammer out a five-year deal.

Injury report — Running back Knowshon Moreno (ACL), guard Chris Kuper (ankle) and tight end Julius Thomas (ankle) were all limited or did not participate while recovering from respective injuries.  Moreno participated in seven-on-seven drills and Kuper participated on a light basis while Thomas was inactive.

Peyton Manning

Denver media have only been allowed to watch five of the Broncos‘ 12 practices to date, but according to the Denver Post‘s Mike Klis, Wednesday’s session was Manning‘s best yet.

The Denver Broncos’ minicamp practice Wednesday at the team’s Dove Valley headquarters was easily the best Peyton Manning has looked since he put on a Broncos uniform.

…He zinged medium-range crossing patterns to tight end Jacob Tamme and receiver Matt Willis. And he nailed deep go-routes to each side of the field, one to Eric Decker, the other to Demaryius Thomas.

While full contact isn’t allowed, the Broncos are running seven-on-seven drills, so those completions were against the likes of Champ Bailey, Tracy Porter, and Mike Adams. That’s good news as Manning and company prepare for the likes of Eric Berry and Quentin Jammer.
