Peyton Manning has brought the crowd to Dove Valley.

For the third time this year (and the third time in eight days), the Denver Broncos enjoyed a record crowd at training camp practice. Today the Broncos smashed the previous Dove Valley attendance record by nearly 700 people, hosting 5,034 fans and media on a sunny Thursday morning.

Before 2012, the previous record was 3,103 people, set during Tim Tebow‘s rookie year.

Much of Wednesday’s practice was devoted to position-specific drills. But when the Broncos went first-team offense vs. first-team defense, it got more interesting, particularly in the two-minute drill.

In one week, the Denver Broncos will kickoff the 2012 preseason when the team travels to Chicago to take on the Bears on August 9th.  Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. (MT).

The game, broadcast on KTVD-TV Ch. 20, will mark Jay Cutler‘s second preseason game against Denver and Peyton Manning‘s first game as a Bronco, though neither quarterback is expected to play more than a series or so.  For out-of-town fans, all of Denver’s preseason games can be viewed online for $19.99 with Preseason Live.

Before traveling to Chicago, the Broncos will hold a team scrimmage at Sports Authority Field at Mile High on Saturday (Aug. 4).  Admission and parking are free and the gates open at 3:30 p.m. — the scrimmage is scheduled to begin at 3:50 Saturday afternoon.

Unfortunately, the scrimmage will not be televised or streamed online, according to BroncoTV’s Chris Hall.  Per Hall, lack of required technology and man-power would make it impossible to stream the event online.

Kyle will be at the scrimmage however, providing coverage here as well as on our Twitter and Facebook pages.  Kyle is also covering Denver’s practice sessions today and tomorrow leading up to the scrimmage.

After the team’s scrimmage, the league’s 2012 preseason will officially kickoff when the Arizona Cardinals take on the New Orleans Saints in the Hall of Fame Game this Sunday.  The game will be televised on NFL Network at 6 p.m (MT).

Two days until the Summer Scrimamge, seven days until preseason and thirty-eight days until the Broncos kickoff the regular season on Sunday Night Football.  Is it Thursday yet?

Broncos logo in the rain

Raindrops cling to the Denver Broncos outdoor presser backdrop after training camp practice Wednesday, August 1, 2012. The Broncos rescheduled practice, moving it ahead four hours to avoid the storm. (BroncoTalk.net photo)

The Denver Broncos predicted the weather would make their 2:20 p.m. practice impossible, so they moved it up four hours and closed it to the public. It turned out to be an inspired, even clairvoyant move: the clouds opened up with rain and lightning just as Coach John Fox and company concluded practice at 1:15 p.m., sending the players running to the locker room after a successful first day back at the fields of Dove Valley.

It was too bad the fans were not allowed to view this practice — the Broncos enjoyed their first true two-minute drill under Peyton Manning, which was easily the highlight of ALL of training camp so far.

ROLL CALL

Safety Quinton Carter (hamstring) and offensive tackle Orlando Franklin (concussion) continued to miss practice. Joshua Moore (hamstring) was limited. During practice, the Broncos lost three wide receivers: Eric Decker (groin strain), Greg Orton (ankle), and D’Andre Goodwin (ankle). Running back Ronnie Hillman (hamstring) also went to the sidelines. Of all of these injuries, I only saw Orton actually leave the field to the locker room; Goodwin and Decker went to the sidelines and missed reps. Didn’t see Hillman.

60 YARDS. SEVEN POINTS. SEVENTY SECONDS.

The full rundown can be found here, but Peyton Manning’s execution of the Broncos’ two-minute drill was true wonder to behold. Between his 4th and 10 pass to Brandon Stokley and Demaryius Thomas‘ sideline sprint to the one-yard line, there’s reason to believe this new Broncos offense will be able to accomplish anything.

Two other quarterbacks were also given the opportunity to run the offense to victory or suffer in defeat under that exact same game scenario: Caleb Hanie and Adam Weber. Click here to read the rest of this entry »

You know that moment in horror movies, right before the serial killer strikes, or the masked culprit is revealed, and the scene lights up with a flash of lightning and a roar of thunder?

John Fox‘s post-practice injury report today was sort of like that.

(With three wide receivers and a running back added to the Broncos’ list of the walking wounded, it was an appropriate sound effect indeed.) Video below.

Cameron Kenney

The Denver Broncos have added wide receiver Cameron Kenney off waivers from the Seattle Seahawks, the team announced. Kenney was an undrafted free agent from Oklahoma who signed with the San Diego Chargers in 2011.

This is the second addition the Broncos have made since the start of camp, first adding Anthony Perkins the day after Quinton Carter suffered an injured hamstring, and now adding Kenney hours after three wide receivers — Eric Decker, D’Andre Goodwin, and Greg Orton — left practice early

Peyton Manning

Quarterback Peyton Manning participates in training camp practice on Saturday, July 28, 2012 at Dove Valley. (BroncoTalk.net photo)

60 yards, 70 seconds, seven points.

That was the situation the Broncos gave quarterback Peyton Manning. Move down the field 60 yards, score a touchdown in under 1:10, or lose the game. It was Manning’s first chance in training camp to execute his legendary two-minute drill.

Manning did not disappoint. Here’s the breakdown:

1st and 10 from the 40 – Manning throws deep to Demaryius Thomas, who might have been able to dive for it, but fails to haul it in. Incomplete.

2nd and 10 – Manning aims for Andre Caldwell with a short pass, but it was expertly broken up by Champ Bailey. Incomplete.

3rd and 10 – Again solid coverage prevents Manning’s pass from gaining ground. This time Chris Harris had Brandon Stokley well covered. Incomplete.

Defensive linemen

With nasty weather on the afternoon horizon and not enough security staff to handle a large crowd of fans before then, the Denver Broncos have cancelled this afternoon’s public practice.

Instead they will hold a full workout that is open to the media from 10:35 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. I’m writing from Dove Valley and heading out now, so check back here for photos, quotes, and BroncoTalk’s one-of-a-kind training camp practice update thereafter, and follow BroncoTalk on Twitter for updates during practice..
