BroncoTalk is the ultimate fan-powered Denver Broncos blog. Make us your daily stop for the latest Denver Broncos news and commentary on the web!
As draft day approaches, BroncoTalk will be giving you game tape highlights of some of the bigger (and smaller) names around the draft. We’re going to cover a position of need for the Broncos not reviewed yet. Today’s installment: Miami Hurricanes Safety Kenny Phillips.
The first video is a good general highlight reel of Phillips throughout college. The second video is an NFL.com interview with the safety. The third is a panel discussing the viablility of Phillips being a first round pick and if he can live up to the “U”‘s standard of past safeties taken in the draft. Also included is the fourth video of Phillips combine workout. To close things out is the Sports Illustrated highlights clip with player overview.
Here is a cool little reel of different NFL coaches discussing what they look for in a draft prospect. Shanahan was highlighted by NFL.com in the segment, Gary Kubiak also makes an appearance. Shanahan on prospects: “My experience with the great teams are guys that would play for nothing.”
I’m starting to think the Gazette reads our blog for story ideas. Last week in our “Draft Memory Lane” segment we covered the terrible 2003 Draft Class. The Gazette has a new article out on the “rough” 2003, and 2004 Bronco drafts. They also have a nice spotlight on what Terry Pierce has been up to. Pierce has now moved on from football and is a financial advisor for Merrill Lynch in Kansas. He also started a business networking website for fellow Kansas State Alums. With the Broncos recent troubles at middle linebacker maybe he could come give us another tryout? Probably not though…
“I went ahead and moved on,” said Pierce, who also started a networking Web site for business owners who are Kansas State alumni. “I wouldn’t have done it had there been another chance in football.”
The rest of the article details what a lot of the players from those two draft have moved on to do. Canadian Football League, Arena Football, dentistry, and soccer round out the interesting career choices. A worthy statistic is that both draft classes had a 95% failure rate. Shows where our issues are coming from now. I give Denver a better grade on 2004 because we did get D.J. Williams in the first round and Tatum Bell put up respectable numbers and was of some value in the Dre Bly trade. Other than Watts, most of those guys were long shot prospects anyway. Shanahan sums up the 03′-04′ situation honestly.
“Those weren’t good drafts or free agency, obviously,” Denver coach Mike Shanahan said after last season. “That stands for itself.”
“If we had some of those drafts, it would be different,” Shanahan said.
The whole article is a well written “Where are They Now” piece and is a good follow up on our segment from last week. Here’s hoping 2008 fares much better for the Broncos.
I was taking another peek at the Denver Broncos 2008 schedule and noticed something I hadn’t seen yet – the games around the bye week. Normally a team would prefer to have their toughest game the week after the bye, with a nice breather of a game right before.
The Broncos have the exact opposite going on.
Week 7 – October 20 – at New England Patriots 6:30 PM
Week 8 – BYE
Week 9 – November 2 – Miami Dolphins 2:05 PM
Nothing to write home about, but it’s worth noting nonetheless. Having a generally tough game before and a generally easy game after wouldn’t even be worth mentioning. It’s just oddly ironic that THE toughest game on the schedule comes the week before the bye, and THE easiest game comes the week after.
Re-live Jason Elam‘s third game winning kick of the season as the Denver Broncos beat the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday Night Football in week 7 this past season. The game will air on the NFL Network at 5:30 EST, 3:30 Denver time.
The reason I really wanted to post this, and watch it myself, is the opportunity it gives us to scout out the Broncos of one year ago. A lot has changed since Week 7 last year (including the abrupt and forced departure of half the defensive line), but this gives us an opportunity to take another look at the 2007 Denver Broncos in one of their better games.
I particularly want to scout the offensive line, both Chris Kuper at left guard and Erik Pears at right tackle. I also want to take a good look at the defensive line, the running backs, and the rest of the defense as a whole. In Kuper’s case in particular, I know this was one of the earliest starts of his career, and he improved as the year went on. But I still want to take a good look and see how much we can improve in 2008.
Again, that’s Sunday (tonight), 5:30 ET, 3:30 MT on the NFL Network.
In case any of you missed this when it originally aired, it’s D.J. Williams remeniscing about draft day when he first thought he would be a Jet and then a Saint. Are you excited to be a Bronco? “Can I tell them no?” Hey, at least he’s honest. D.J. goes on to clear the air thinking he was going to be a perpetual special teams player behind our LB group at the time.
The New York Jets may have just gained a bit of leverage. Trade talks with the Denver Broncos for DT Dewayne Robertson have been ongoing for over a month, and those talks are expected to continue as both teams approach the NFL draft. News came out today, though, that the Philadelphia Eagles reportedly visited with Robertson, giving the defensive tackle a physical and having him meet with team officials.
With the NFL Draft around the corner, Eagles coach Andy Reid is still seeking options to continue building his team.
Jets defensive tackle Dewayne Robertson, a No. 4 overall pick in 2003, visited the NovaCare Complex recently to meet with the Eagles and take a physical, according to two league sources.
Another factor worth considering is the role Robertson would have on either team. With the Broncos, a starting spot is virtually guaranteed. The Eagles, on the other hand, have a few young defensive tackles that would compete for a starting spot. This is just speculation, but if Robertson had a choice in the matter (which technically he doesn’t), he’d prefer to go to Denver, where he’s already agreed to a contract that likely includes performance-based incentives.
I’ve been up and down on this trade, but upon hearing this news my heart sank a bit. I guess that was my way of telling myself that I liked the idea after all. The idea that someone else is interested in Robertson is about the only card Eric Mangini has left to play in trade talks with the Broncos… looks like the price might have just gone up, if only a bit.
Should the Denver Broncos select a linebacker in the first round of the 2008 NFL Draft?
We’ve given you some reasons why they should. We’ve also discussed why they shouldn’t. Now you tell us! Take the poll below, or use the upper left sidebar on the main page.
Suppose the Broncos select LB in the first round. Do you approve?
I disapprove. (68%, 43 Votes)
