Dylan Gandy

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The Denver Broncos on Wednesday signed guard Dylan Gandy to their active roster and added cornerback Josh Bell to their practice squad, Head Coach Mike Shanahan announced.

Gandy (6-foot-3, 290 pounds) is a fourth-year guard who rejoins the Broncos after he was released by the club on Sept. 9. Originally signed by the Broncos on May 16, Gandy competed in Denver’s training camp and was inactive for its season opener at Oakland on Sept. 8.

He spent his first three professional seasons (2005-07) with the Colts after they selected him in the fourth round (129th overall) of the 2005 NFL Draft from Texas Tech University. He has played 42 career games (14 starts) in the regular season along with six career playoff games (1 start).

Quick Facts: With a win this Sunday, Mike Shanahan’s career win total would be 150. As it stands Shanahan is 149-95 (.611) for his career. This will be the 96th time that the two teams have met, Denver is actually a loser in the series overall (43-52-0). Denver’s running back Selvin Young has registered 100 yard games both times that he has played Kansas City. Denver currently leads the league in scoring (38.0 avg.) and touchdowns (14), the exact amount posted by the New England Patriots last season after three games. Jay Cutler is ranked second in the NFL in passing yards (914) and touchdowns (8). Brandon Marshall is ranked first in the NFL in receiving (24 receptions, 321 yards, 13.4 avg., 2 TDs). Center Casey Wiegmann is also returning to Kansas City for the first time as a Bronco.

The Kansas City Chiefs are at home, winless and just chomping at the bit to knock-off the number one Denver Broncos. The immediate thing for fans to keep in mind is that this is an important game, probably the most important game the Broncos will have all week. The outcome can propel the Broncos forward to 4-0 in a weakened AFC. Two of the tougher games that Denver had on the 2008 schedule are done. Both games ended up circling the rim, but ultimately dropping into the win column. Pulling a game at Kansas City in September and not November is also a blessing for Denver.

If there’s anyone out there who still isn’t convinced that the Oakland Raiders are an absolutely mess… this video is for you. Not only does this show the disarray in the Raiders organization from top to bottom, this clip singularly represents the most aggressive play made by anyone collecting paychecks from Al Davis in five years.

Smiling much? Word has it that Raiders Coach Lane Kiffin was, too, during the whole fiasco. Check out the full story on how this all went down right here. Priceless!

Abdullah

The Denver Broncos performed a flurry of roster moves on Tuesday, some surprising, some not. It was first announced that veteran C Tom Nalen has been placed on Injured Reserve, ending his season and possibly his career.

That move isn’t surprising. This one is – safety Hamza Abdullah, the starter up until the third week of preseason, has been waived. The Broncos added free-agent safety Vernon Fox, most recently from Washington, to take his place.

Abdullah started in eight games for the Broncos in 2007, finishing with a career-high in tackles (48) and pass breakups (7). He was declared inactive as a healthy scratch against both the Chargers and Saints this year. In his one and only game in 2008 against the Raiders, Abdullah registered one tackle.

The Broncos also released wide receiver Travis Wilson from its practice squad on Tuesday.

It makes you scratch your head a bit. Abdullah was by no means an All-Pro, but releasing him for another team’s scraps is a surprise. This was a starter for the Broncos a month ago. He obviously wasn’t stepping it up in practice; perhaps he stopped putting in the effort after he was benched. Press release after the jump.

Nalen

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The Denver Broncos on Tuesday placed center Tom Nalen on injured reserve with a left knee injury, Head Coach Mike Shanahan announced.

A 15-year veteran, Nalen ranks second in Broncos history in career starts (188) while his 194 career games played in a Denver uniform represent the third-highest total in club annals. He entered the league with the Broncos as a seventh-round selection (218th overall) in the 1994 NFL Draft from Boston College.

Nalen, whose five Pro Bowl selections (1997-2000, ’03) are the most by a Broncos offensive lineman in franchise history, was a key member of Denver’s back-to-back Super Bowl teams in 1997 and ’98. He helped Denver post the most rushing yards (29,131) and individual 100-yard rushing games (93) in the NFL from 1995-2007 in addition to tying for the league lead in individual 1,000-yard rushing seasons (11) during that time.

An honorable mention All-American as a senior at Boston College, Nalen attended Foxboro High School in Foxboro, Mass., and was born on May 13, 1971.

Is this the end for Tommy Nails?  My all-time favorite Bronco, other than Elway, might be hanging them up after this.  Much like Rod Smith, the heart is willing, but the body isn’t able.  He’s a definite Ring of Famer and should be a Hall of Famer.  He’s not retired yet, but I’d seriously be surprised if he laced them up ever again.  Thanks for everything Tom.

Ronnie Brown tosses a touchdown pass.

Denver Broncos coach Mike Shanahan is a notorious work-a-holic, rumored to research opponents weeks, if not months ahead of time. Instead of covering the entire NFL, what we at The Denver Bronco Talk Blog are doing is covering the NFL that you should care about. Every opponent the Denver Broncos face this season will get full weekly coverage from the first Sunday until the Broncos play them. As fans you will be able to focus on which player/team did what from week-to-week. Heck, you might even look better than Shanahan when the Broncos face off against a team that you’ve been scouting for the last six weeks.

Week 3 New Orleans Saints
The Saints had six starters out for this game, including their number one wide receiver. There were two keys on defense in this game, assign a man to Reggie Bush and shutdown tight end Jeremy Shockey. Guess what didn’t happen? Bush ran wild collecting 148 total yards and two touchdowns, Shockey went for 75-yards on eight catches. The other important statistic is the fact that Drew Brees threw for 421-yards (in the first half, just kidding). Denver’s defense saved the game, but that’s about all they saved. D.J. Williams, Nate Webster and Boss Bailey at times looked incredible, other times they just looked as Bush whipped by them. Other teams that employ a back comparable to New Orleans, that the Broncos will face this season: Kansas City, Jacksonville and Miami.

Week 4 @ Kansas City Chiefs
Tyler Thigpen is the third starting quarterback in as many weeks for Kansas City, prior to the game it was revealed that the Chiefs had contacted the Cleveland Browns regarding the availability of Brady Quinn. The Browns replied that there was no availability, Quinn will remain a backup in Cleveland. Thigpen is definitely not the answer for Kansas City at quarterback and they know that. Even this early in the season, the Chiefs have already dedicated this season to getting their younger players as much experience as possible, basically seceding their season. That didn’t stop Larry Johnson though, who finally showed up this season breaking one hundred yards after just 16 carries, he didn’t stop there though and finished with 121-yards on 24 carries.

Ultimately, what hurt the Chiefs the most in this game, was Thigpen’s three interceptions, against the Atlanta Falcons‘ defense. Thigpen will not likely get an easier defense to face off with this season and definitely not against Denver next week as Champ Bailey and Dre Bly come to town. Atlanta pounded the ball down the Chiefs’ throat, passing only 18 times the whole game. This is something I wouldn’t expect Denver to do, but they definitely have the means for whatever is necessary next-week.

Week 5 Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Brian Griese had Tampa off to a 14-9 lead going into halftime, before Kyle Orton led his Bears to a touchdown throw early in the third-quarter. Ultimately, Griese won the battle against his former team, throwing the ball 67 times! Griese completed 38 of those 67 for 407 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions. The Buccaneers were atrocious running the ball, Earnest Graham and Warrick Dunn combining for 17 rushes and 47-yards. Prior today’s game, Graham had averaged an incredible 8.3 yards per carry, the Bears held him to 1.3. Where the Buccaneers really win games is on defense, today the defense accounted for three sacks and two interceptions. However, I wouldn’t exactly call Chicago’s offense, “High-powered.”
