Sunday’s 16-13 victory over Tampa Bay came with a price for the Broncos – several offensive playmakers were left on crutches. 36 hours later, it’s still unknown how serious these injuries are, or how they’ll shape the rest of the 2008 season.
First, the good news – wide receiver Eddie Royal‘s (ankle) X-rays were negative. Royal told reporters after the game that he hoped to play at Jacksonville on Sunday, but that sounds like a tall task at this point. It wouldn’t surprise me to see the Broncos take it easy on Royal this week, but thankfully we don’t have to worry about Royal missing an extended period of time.
Next, the bad news – or, more accurately, the unknown. Tight end Tony Scheffler has suffered a strained groin. We’ve caught wind that it could be a serious injury – even season-threatening, but that’s only speculation at this point and is unconfirmed. Scheffler told reporters on Monday that he doesn’t think he’ll be ready for Sunday against Jacksonville, but doesn’t believe his injury to be serious. Meanwhile, running back Selvin Young also suffered a strained groin in Sunday’s win. The team gave no updates to either player’s status during the team press conference on Monday, so expect news on both guys to come down Wednesday.

For a while in 2007, tight end Chad Mustard was a weekly waiver wire wonder. One week, the Denver Broncos would sign the fifth-year player on to their active roster; the next week, he’d be gone.
In 2008, you could consider backup guard Dylan Gandy to be in the same boat. He’s already been off and on the roster several times. That’s why the news on Tuesday reeks of irony – the Broncos have signed Mustard again, waiving Gandy to make room on the roster.
Mustard (6-6, 277) is in his third year with the Broncos. He was waived on August 30 shortly after training camp.

Houston Texans quarterback Sage Rosenfels did his best John Elway impression on Sunday… let’s just say he’s not quite a Hall of Famer yet. This play was an instrumental piece of the puzzle for a furious 21-point comeback by the Indianapolis Colts during the waning minutes of the fourth quarter on Sunday.

I’m sure you all know I’m NOT a big fan of the running back by committee strategery. It’s not because I don’t like the backs we have – quite the opposite. I really like Selvin Young. I’m a huge Andre Hall fan. I’ve also expressed my fandom for Peyton Hillis this off-season and Michael Pittman has been a wonderful surprise for me.
But despite this talented team of individuals, I am not satisfied with how the rotation of these players has preformed so far (14th in the league in rushing yards).
Therefore, I propose the following: Pick a guy and go with him.
Think of it this way. We had a great competition this off-season for middle linebacker. Webster and Niko fought like crazy for the starting job and both men brought slightly different skills to the table. However, in the end Shanahan went with ONE guy. We wouldn’t even CONSIDER having the two of them rotate in and out of the lineup each series because that would ruin the chemistry and comfort of the surrounding unit even if it brought different and unique talents onto the field.
The same HAS to be true of the RB’s as well. You can’t tell me that our O-line, our FB’s and TE’s as well as Cutler won’t rather have ONE guy that they can ‘get a feel for’ during the week (and the game). This constant switching out runners thing is doing more harm to our consistency rushing the ball than it gains us in flexibility.
