Denver Broncos blog, news and rumors

I know anymore is one word, but I not in this context. What a crazy few days, here’s the links.

After all of those videos I’m pretty sure everyone is extremely ecstatic for Dawkins, because I know I am.

It’s good to know that despite all of the controversy 32 year old Josh McDaniels had to endure today he still kept to the task at hand.  Adam Schefter reports that Denver signed cornerback Andre Goodman to a 5 year 25 million dollar contract that includes 10 million guaranteed. Even though Goodman is 30 years old he had a career high 5 interceptions last season and an amazing 19 passes defended (11 more than Dre’ Bly). This price tag is pretty steep and a 5 year deal seems kind of long for his age, so his production better make it worth Mike Nolan’s while. What do you think Denver? Will Goodman be an improvement over Bly? How much of an impact do you think he will really be?

NFL Network’s Adam Shefter finally stated that Jay Cutler is not on the trading block (I know many of you will only truly believe it if Schefter says it himself). Now CBS4’s Vic Lombardi is reporting that there is a scheduled sit down talk between Cutler and “high ranking officials of the organization” (i.e. Josh McDaniels). This meeting is scheduled sometime today, so the bronco nation will hold its breath while McDaniels and Brian Xanders explain. Denver fans can only hope that McDaniels will show some of his charisma that convinced Pat Bowlen to hand over the reigns.

UPDATE – Talks on between Broncos and Cutler on hold

Kudos to fellow ‘bronco maniac’ Sabo for noticing the new article. Vic Lombardi reports that Jay Cutler does not plan on meeting Denver officials “any time soon.” Lets hope Cutler can fit it into his busy offseason schedule to speak to his current bosses.

Ladies and gentleman, meet your new quarterback, same as the old quarterback. No thanks to the New England Patriots Bill Belichick.

“Bill Belichick wouldn’t do his mother a favor,” one NFL insider scoffed yesterday. “Anybody who looks at this [Matt Cassel] deal and thinks he did doesn’t know him. Or the guys he just traded.”

Though the relevance of the Cassel trade is obvious at this point, he went to the Kansas City Chiefs, but not before wrecking havoc throughout the hills of Dove Valley.

What were your intentions with the prodigal son Mr. Belichick? Worried what may happen when Josh McDaniels gets together with the guy that Tom Brady used to be? This situation’s got clam chowder all over it and what has it done? It put a little chink in the already unsteady relationship of McDaniels and Denver Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler.

My requests for further information from the Broncos have thus far gone unanswered. Though McDaniels did state that Cutler is the quarterback in Denver, what more needs to be said? Throughout this whole situation, I keep being reminded of the John Lynch quote, when Cutler was first drafted.

“If this guy can take a bunch of future doctors and lawyers and have them competing against the Florida Gators,” explained Lynch, “This guy is a stud”.

How complicated is the new offense that McDaniels is bringing from New England? Very, but Mike Shanahan’s offense wasn’t exactly a easy. Shanahan played to the strengths of his players, where as McDaniels system plays to the moment-by-moment weaknesses of the defense. There is nothing that Cutler cannot handle offensively, he will have to continue to mature, but a Pro Bowl in his third season is nothing to scoff at. Neither was the way he commanded the offense last season.

Remember, Shanahan made the move to get Cutler, because he wanted the next Peyton Manning. McDaniels didn’t inherit a tarnished flag here, he has one of the best offenses in the league and a defense that can only get better. He didn’t take a, “Swing for the fence,” in trying to trade Cutler, it’s just as likely that teams have tried to trade for Champ Bailey or D.J. Williams. Those stories just haven’t been leaked like this one.

Oh, and would someone please shut Bus Cook up? Who started the rumor that Denver wanted to trade Tony Scheffler? Who would even want Scheffler? He’s a great tight end, but what could they possibly offer for an unproven tight end that hasn’t made it through an entire season?

UPDATE (March 1, 2009 12:15 EST): As I am typing this story out, ESPN and Chris Mortensen go live with this story. Stating that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were prepared to offer a first-round and third-round for Cutler to the Patriots and that would have turned over to New England who would receive a first and Cutler from Denver for Cassel.

Why in the world would Denver give up a first and Cutler for Cassel? Via PFT Mike Florio stated that Mort was insinuating that Belichick leaked the news of the Broncos interest to the Boston Globe. There’s no way if the 12th pick is up in the air that New England says yes to the 34th pick in the draft and gives up Mike Vrabel. Get better Belichick.

UPDATE (March 1, 2009 6:15 EST): The Broncos have scheduled a sit-down talk with Cutler. He is not on the block, though he may have been specifically for the Cassel trade. They will not be trading him and he is no longer, nor was he ever seriously considered to be on the block. CBS-4 in Denver has just confirmed this as well.

In other news it is confirmed that the Broncos have signed cornerback Andre Goodman formerly of the Miami Dolphins. He started every game last season for the Dolphins and has previously played for the Detroit Lions.

Let’s focus on bringing Derrick Ward in, with the contract situation with J.J. Arrington weaning.

The crown jewel amongst the running backs available in free agency, Derrick Ward, will be in Denver on Sunday.

Ward has received attention from several teams and with the signing of Corell Buckhalter it seemed like the Denver Broncos may have been out of contention in the Ward sweepstakes.

If the Broncos were able to lure Ward, the bruising capabilities out of their backfield would be unparalleled in the NFL.

Both Ward and Buckhalter have spelled two of the better running backs in the NFL for the last couple of seasons. They both carry very similar capabilities to their former team members Brandon Jacobs and Brian Westbrook.

Having seen Ward play for the last several seasons in New York, I am very much a fan. I would love to have him and I think that if Denver was able to sign him the one-two-three punch from the Broncos back game would be simply incredible. Yes, we have young talent, but both Ryan Torain and Peyton Hillis were hurt twice last season. Yes, both Ward and Buckhalter have injury concerns as well. What do you say Nation?

According to ESPN’s Bill Williamson, Jay Cutler is so angry at Josh McDaniels and Brian Xanders that he wants out of Denver. The trade talks have allegedly ruined his trust in them. Personally, I’m highly disappointed in Jay Cutler, this is not the action of a team leader. Only hours after the trade talk craze and he wants out just like that.

“The relationship has been tarnished,” the source said. “I think it’s beyond repair.

“It’s like a knife to Jay’s heart,” the source said. “It will be hard for him to get past this.”

McDaniels certainly has his hands full with this one. This is certainly a disappointing day for all Denver fans. Could Jay Cutler really don another jersey in 2009? It’s highly unlikely due to the lack of quality QBs available. In an attempt to put any more personal bias out of this story I’ll just leave the link to his article.

In hugely surprising news, the Denver Broncos have been reportedly mentioning Pro Bowl quarterback Jay Cutler in numerous trade discussions since free agency began yesterday.

The talks reportedly began when the New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers were working on a three-way trade that would have sent Cutler to the Bucs and quateback Matt Cassel to the Broncos. The Broncos opted out of the trade before the Detroit Lions approached Denver and New England with a similar trade. The trade talks became a moot point when Cassel was traded to the Chiefs early Saturday instead.

There are conflicting reports regarding the nature of the trade talks. Vic Lombardi of CBS4 Denver claims that the Broncos are “actively trying to shop” Cutler. Adam Schefter of NFL.com reports that the Broncos “firmly maintain that they never intended to trade Cutler, (and) that they were approached to make the trades.” Click here to read the rest of this entry »

The rumor mill was churning back and forth on this one all afternoon yesterday about whether or not Dawkins actually signed. He signed this morning and the Broncos seem particularly pleased by this one.

Press release after the jump.

Now as the sun rotates and the team gets bigger, word on the street is that the Denver Broncos are continuing their full-on kamikaze assault at the NFL’s Free Agency, by signing former Cleveland Browns inside linebacker Andra Davis.

Continuing with the trend, it seems as if everyone that has visited Denver has signed. There are reports that thus far, everyone who has come to visit the Broncos has already signed an offer sheet.

The signing of Davis solidifies a gap that was left when the Broncos chose not to resign free agent Nate Webster. It also cools the bring Ray Lewis to Denver campaign.

In other free agent news, the Broncos have also expressed interest in Miami Dolphins cornerback Andre Goodman, who could be signed by the end of the day. There’s also the announcement that the Broncos have added defensive tackle Darrell Reid (formerly of the Indianapolis Colts) to a reported $6.8 million over three-years. Reid was a special teamer for the most part, but did fill in as a fullback during goal line situations for the Colts.

Davis did not have the best performance in 2008, but he is a solid guy and has had great seasons and really great games (20 tackles against Green Bay in 2005). I don’t know that he’s better than Webster though… What do you think Nation?

Gaffney   Hill
Gaffney & Hill

The Denver Broncos have been very busy on the first day of free agency, wheeling and dealing for players at every phase of the football field. New Head Coach Josh McDaniels and GM Brian Xanders made their fifth and sixth known signings Friday afternoon with the additions of wide receiver Jabar Gaffney, formerly of the Patriots, and safety Renaldo Hill of the Miami Dolphins. According to Adam Schefter of NFL.com, both signed four-year, $10-million deals with $3 million in guarantees.

With the addition of Brian Dawkins, that’s two new safeties that both represent huge upgrades over last year’s unit. And you can’t blame McD for wanting a piece of his offense from New England. I’m really liking how this first day is shaping up.
