The Denver Broncos will again tap into the veteran free agent market this week to address their injury-riddled running backs corps.

Former Oakland Raiders running back Justin Fargas is flying into Denver tonight to take a physical and finalize a deal with the Broncos, per multiple reports.

Fargas, 30, played in twelve games for the Raiders in 2009, starting four. He’s averaged under four yards per carry since 2007, his best year, where he rushed for 1,009 yards and averaged 4.5 ypc. In seven years in Oakland, Fargas (6-1, 220) totaled 3,369 yards for a 4.1 yard average and 10 touchdowns.

Fargas was released by the Raiders following the 2009 season and has been a free agent since.

D.J. Williams

A number of Broncos returned to practice Tuesday, Head Coach Josh McDaniels announced, led by 2009 Pro Bowl alternate inside linebacker D.J. Williams. D.J. had missed all but two practices in camp’s opening two days.

Also returning were nose tackle Chris Baker, center Dustin Fry, and fullback Spencer Larsen.

“I don’t think anybody on the list of injured players (aside from Elvis Dumervil) is in a dire situation,” McDaniels said. [MaxDenver.com]

Williams, along with captain Brian Dawkins, were wearing orange no-contact jerseys as they took the field Tuesday, indicating that, while they’ve recuperated from their ailments enough to walk through practice, they’re still not quite one hundred percent.

McDaniels also said wide receiver Demaryius Thomas underwent x-rays on his injured left ankle that came back negative. Thomas will still be sidelined, though, for the Broncos’ practice Tuesday. McDaniels did not give a timetable for his return.

Training camp! Denver Broncos QB Brady Quinn and WR Matthew Willis line up for a drill as fans watch on Wednesday, August 3, 2010 (BroncoTalk.net)

It’s training camp — time to step up or shut up, as the football gods would say, and some Denver Broncos have insisted on the former.

The Broncos are one week in, and we’ve been able to watch and take notes on every practice the Broncos have held to date. Now, it’s only one week of practice — there’s a lot of football still to be played, so take this for what it’s worth — but here are five guys who have most surprised us with a number of great practices, and who have impressed us enough to raise our expectations for them in 2010.

(Check back later for the other end of the spectrum: five Broncos having a not-so-great camp.)

WR Matthew Willis

He’s easily been the surprise of training camp, coming up from the Broncos’ practice squad to start in Week 17 last year only to improve upon that statement this training camp. We’d be so bold as to say Willis has been making a strong argument for a starting spot this year. Yes, Matthew Willis. Starting spot. Click here to read the rest of this entry »

Perrish Cox CombineDestroyed by Kansas City 44-24 in the season finale I found it easy, well easier, to put football on the back of my mind for a bit. Even through the Tebow-mania subsided my subconscious was still not very football-forward, I was still putting my school work and work-work ahead of my Bronco Talk duties, strange right? Even when I finalized my plans for training camp, I still struggled to manifest my thoughts to paper digital. Then there was the Hall of Fame Game.

That’s right, live football. I don’t care if I’m watching Alex Mortenson throwing picks to Reggie Corner (How do I remember that? And yes, best CB name ever), I’m watching live, real FOOTBALL!  It’s not just me either.

According to a tweet from the NFL’s Greg Aiello, the rating on NBC was a 7.6 overnight with a 13 share. That made the game the best Hall of Fame game for the league in six years, and it represented an increase of 31 percent from 2009 and 41 percent from 2008.

With that in mind, I’m compiling a list of things to watch during the preseason in a series of articles. This time around, we take a look at what’s behind the corner.  Click here to read the rest of this entry »

Denver Broncos quarterbacks Kyle Orton and Tim Tebow split reps -- and cheers -- Saturday night in front of a record crowd at INVESCO Field at Mile High (BroncoTalk.net)

Denver Broncos quarterbacks Kyle Orton and Tim Tebow split reps -- and cheers -- Saturday night in front of a record crowd at INVESCO Field at Mile High (BroncoTalk.net)

It was an unprecedented practice Saturday night at INVESCO Field at Mile High.

It was unprecedented in franchise history for the attendance: 20,782 fans filled the stadium, setting a Denver Broncos all-time record for practice attendance.

It was unprecedented in this training camp for the type of practice: full contact in full pads, with all three quarterbacks taking an equal number of snaps in team drills.

And it was unprecedented for the amount of screaming and cheering a horrendously bald rookie quarterback received. Tim Tebow is still pretty popular, bad haircut and all.

But while the record crowd was thoroughly entertained (no boo birds for Kyle Orton this time around), there was still the dark cloud that seems to be ever-hanging over this year’s training camp: the injury bug. Rookie wide receivers Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker both came up limping during the semi-scrimmage, each heading to the locker room mid-practice with trainers in tow. Neither would return, and updates on both are expected Sunday. Click here to read the rest of this entry »

Ed. Note: I felt this was worth bumping to the top of BT today. Congrats again to Floyd Little.

I truly believe that none of us is anything until the least of us is something.

The man who single-handedly kept the Broncos in Denver stepped to the podium in Canton, Ohio Saturday donning his gold Hall of Fame suit coat. Behind him stood his son Marc, who had just delivered a wonderful introduction for the man he called his best friend.

“I’m still standing!” Floyd Little shouted just before he began his speech.

It’s been a long road for Little, who retired 35 years ago as the Broncos’ all-time leading rusher (only the franchise’s Terrell Davis has since topped that mark).  That road included 6,323 rushing yards, 12,203 all-purpose yards, three Pro Bowls, and 30 long, long years of waiting.
