Denver Broncos blog, news and rumors

This season for the Broncos, everything that could go wrong, has gone wrong.

After last Sunday’s game, many Bronco fans lamented that Offensive Coordinator Mike McCoy and Coach Eric Studesville were too conservative in the play calling with Tim Tebow as the starter.  Denver sports insider Vic Lombardi summed it up perfect when he tweeted:  “The game was supposed to be all about developing/cultivating a young quarterback.  And yet, they shielded him with run calls with game on the line.”

Well, Lombardi and Bronco fans aren’t alone.  Journey man wide receiver Brandon Lloyd agrees:

On the Mike and Scott radio show Tuesday, Lloyd was asked if he thought the play calling Sunday was too conservative.  “Yes”, was his answer.  He then went on to say that he didn’t believe the weather was that much of a factor and that the team “could have went ahead and threw the ball a lot more with Tim, and spread it around a lot more to the other receivers.” Click here to read the rest of this entry »

Pick Six Lost in the NFL Football

We feel the same way, Josh. (AP Photo/Jack Dempsey, File)

Hang on for a sec… I’m dusting off my keyboard. There. much better.

As some of you have notice I’ve been MIA since the preseason. I know I will likely be accused of being a very poor fan by admitting this, but I just couldn’t watch my beloved team being managed the way it was the last two seasons. I’m not talking about just lost players and bad coaching. Josh and Xanders cleaned house both on the field and off. And while it was painful for me to watch Josh dismantle our famous zone blocking scheme (for example), it was equally painful for me to watch position coaches and front office staff that I have respected for years leave Dove Valley. The new administration just hasn’t been the same, and although I put up with last year, I just didn’t have the heart to do again this year.

My friends and fellow bloggers have asked me if the recent firing of McDaniels will lure me back from my self-imposed blogging exile, and while I want more than anything to get that wonderful Orange & Blue passion back I think it will seriously depend on what Mr. Bowlen decides to do when replacing Josh.

Broncos Raiders Football

On Monday, Broncos Interim Head Coach Eric Studesville announced that Tim Tebow will be the starting Quarterback against the Houston Texans on Sunday.

The Broncos are looking to snap a five game losing streak, playing at home for the first time in four weeks.  Last week in Oakland, Tebow debuted against the Raiders and played well, all things considered.  The former Gator went 8-of-16 for 138 passing yards and added 78 rushing yards, scoring twice and putting his name in the record books.

“I thought Tim played well in his first start in a difficult environment, being in there with those fans when they started getting cranked up,” said coach Studesville. “I thought he really managed everything well — the environment, our game plan, got us in and out of the things that we needed to and just ran our offense well.”

Studesville went on to note that Kyle Orton‘s rib injury did play a part in the decision to start Tebow, and that the team is developing a game plan geared toward Tebow’s strengths.  Meaning we’ll probably see some more QB keepers and draws this Sunday, giving Tebow the chance to do what he did best while at Florida.

It is also likely that Tebow will get more chances to throw this week, as running back Knowshon Moreno may not be 100%, and Denver’s rushing attack suffered mightily without him last week.

Sunday’s game starts at 2:05 (MTD) and will be broadcasted on CBS.

Yesterday showed us a lot of things, some great and some… not so much.

A time to thrill

  • “The NFL has been around for 90 years, and until Tebow came along, only two quarterbacks — the similarly styled Michael Vick (2002) and Kor- dell Stewart (2000) — had rushed for a 40-yard touchdown and thrown for a 30-yard score in the same game” – Mike Klis of the Denver Post
  • “His [Tim Tebow] 100.5 quarterback rating is the highest in team history for an NFL debut and the highest among the league’s seven rookie quarterbacks who have made their starting debut in 2010.” – Denver Broncos PR Staff – Denver Broncos Post Game Notes
  • “[Brandon Lloyd] became just the third player in NFL history to record his first 1,200-yard receiving season in his eighth NFL year or later.” – Denver Broncos PR Staff – Denver Broncos Post Game Notes

Plain old sadness

The Denver Broncos have been assigned cornerback Chevis Jackson off of waivers.

Jackson became available on the 18th when he was waved by the New England Patriots.

Jackson is a third-year player with three career starts in 33 appearances. He was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons in the third round and has since played for the Jacksonville Jaguars and Patriots. Jackson played college football at Louisiana State University where he graduated ranked second in school history in passes defensed.

To make room for Jackson on the roster Denver released linebacker Kevin Alexander.

A couple days ago Broncos General Manager Brian Xanders held a press conference where he explicitly explained who held the power on player personnel issues and implicitly showed the strength of his spine. While conducting an interview with the Associated Press, Brian Xanders stated:

“The dynamics were he [McDaniels] had final say on player personnel issues… I was respectful of that, and I was going to work under those parameters.”

However, that is not how Xanders’ job description read at his time of hire. Greg Henry of Examiner.com wrote back on February 12th, 2009:

The Broncos announced Xanders will be in charge of all player personnel issues, including college scouting, pro personnel and labor negotiations. He also will have oversight responsibilities with respect to the video, equipment, grounds and athletic training staffs.

The phrase in charge means, “to instruct authoritatively.” Apparently Xanders didn’t get that memo because he seemed to let Josh McDaniels push him around on nearly every decision made over the past season and a half. If Xanders wanted to draft a defensive tackle, no can do, McDaniels just spent three picks trading up for Tim Tebow. If Xanders wanted hazelnut grounds in the maker, too bad, McDaniels only drinks french roast. I hope you like what you saw out of Tim Tebow yesterday, because it looks like the rookie will get two more games to show more of what he’s made of. According to the Denver Post:

Healthy or not, though, Orton is not likely to start the final two games at home.

Due to Cincinnati and Buffalo winning yesterday Denver is in position to receive the number two overall pick for the upcoming draft. Since Carolina won yesterday there is an outside chance that Denver could be picking first overall, which is referred to as the Andrew Luck spot. The last thing Denver fans need right now is another quarterback controversy, so these last two games are very important for Tim Tebow to excel in… unless you want another Standford QB phenom.

What do you think Bronco fans, Tim Tebow deserve the right to continue to start? Is Tebow the future?

So Tim Tebow finally got the start that a large portion of Broncos’ fandom has been clamoring for. As another writer here at BroncoTalk would say, “It’s finally Tebow Time!” So what did Tim Tebow do with chapter 1 of Tebow Time?

If you were looking for even more of a reason to like Tim Tebow, here it is.

Tebow posted “Psalm 23:4” to his Twitter and Facebook accounts.

Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me.

A taste of things to come; a glimpse into the future. One thing that is for sure, the decision to start Tebow could not have come at a better time to unite Denver fans.

Are you in that mood yet!?!
